I asked I Ching what if I did a particular thing at some unspecified point in time (not at the present) and it gave 45.4 moving to hexagram 8. When I read different interpretations of the fourth line of hexagram 45, almost everyone is align it is auspicious - the editor on the website [ http://www.jamesdekorne.com/GBCh/hex45.htm] sums up the fourth line as "(minus the Confucian commentary) unambiguously favourable". Confucius says something like "his position is not the proper one to him". I wonder why Confucius' reading of the line might be so different to everyone else?

As for hexagram 8, I have read it may mean some good things, like the functioning of a divine process. However many commentators say if you hesitate or arrive late then hexagram 8 means bad luck. that raises another question, which is how would I know if I was arriving late at hexagram 8?

Hi, this is my first time responding to something in the forum not years old but in response to your question I look at how the Yi responded as having a lot to do with with your energy and also comprehension in relation to the thing. You ask what if you do a particular thing at some unspecified point in time and the Yi responds with Gathering and Legge states that “forces” are gathering. These forces, which I believe have to do with manifesting the opportune moment or kairos have a lot to do with explicating what Hexagram 8 might mean but first an exploration of 45.4.

This is a line that very much pertains to not striving too much but none the less being correct in response to duties. Confucius might have thought that this line has a relationship to a sort of well adjusted, but not too ambitious government worker (who wants modest security and success) and the “proper” position for him in gathering of forces is to really utilize the fullness of kairos (not necessarily becoming a ruler but just drawing out what is most opportune). You asked vaguely about doing a particular “thing” at an “unspecified point in time” and I believe the Yi is responding to that with — 45.4 — Yes in the sense of “unspecified point in time” being the right time and “thing” being the right thing for the right time.

Hexagram 8 as the transformed Hexagram imo is very helpful for this because it might provide you with ways to know when the right time is. Unchanged Hexagram 8 is often about the right people or moments or “things” for the proper people they are bonded to. Meaning that you should be successful when you do the thing at the unspecified time when it feels right to you. Potentially explore how you would know what the right time is with the Yi (if it is the case that knowing is a challenge).
