What to expect in a relationship

lake below the mountain

A new listener’s reading for this podcast episode:

‘What to expect in this relationship?’

And Yi’s answer –

changing to

Hexagram 41, Decreasing, changing to 26, Great Tending (or Taming or Nurturing…), with changing line 3:

‘Three people walking,
Hence decreased by one person.
One person walking,
Hence gains a friend.’

Hexagram 41, line 3

Who are the people walking, and what could this be about?

(If you’d like some more listening/reading, here’s an earlier episode that also started with Hexagram 41, and here’s a post about how mountain works as outer trigram.)

  1. Often times to understand something we need to understand what this something IS NOT. This is what we get using IChing360 hexagrams explorer.

    Inversed Opposite Hexagram

    # 31 – Mutual Influence; Other Names: Attraction, Dating, Sensation.
    Attributes: Attraction, loyalty, sensitivity, support.
Core Concepts: Mutual Influence, Courtship, beneficial interdependence.
Judgement: To take maiden to wife brings good fortune.

    Anti-Hexagram

    # 45 – Gathering Together; Other Names: Community, Joining, Massing.
    Attributes: Grouping, collective strength.
Core Concepts: Bringing people together. Collective strength makes positive changes in the world.
Judgement: The king approaches his temple. It furthers one to see the great man. This brings success. It furthers one to undertake something

That was what the situation was NOT.

Now, let’s see where this situation goes.

Target Hexagram – # 26 – The Taming Power of Great; Other Names: Great Accumulation, Appropriate Restraint.
    Attributes: Accumulation, fulfillment, inner strength
Core Concepts: Accumulation with appropriate restraint.
Judgement: Not eating at home brings good fortune. It furthers one to cross a great water.

Advice: This hexagram is about the idea of holding firm. Accumulating great power requires firmness and self-restraint. Learn to be reserved and gradual in harnessing your power for the next step until virtue is fully accumulated. Only with daily renewal and holding firm one can continue his growth. Let the inner voice direct your development. It is favorable to enter public office, it is favorable to undertake great things.
Scholar Speaking: You have enough energy and determination to move forward. But don`t try to advance forcefully – you will regret. At the time of great accumulation one should stay firm and don`t act. Cultivate perseverance within and hold firm to your dreams. Stay watchful and alert. You may encounter hindrances in your way to success. Gently resolve them applying friendship if possible as friendship itself is a great power. Chances can be taken responsibly and within a scope of your power.

Long story short – I Ching sees the separation with new growth in the new relationships.
