Hi. I'm new--here as well as with I Ching--so [pretty please] have patience with me. LOL! I did search first to see if I could find the Hex 1.1.2.6>31--but didn't find it.

Background: I'm the type that believes in signs, and I do not believe in coincidences. The last 8 or 9 years have been really stressful on me because I became the sole parent of my children after their dad died. After being pretty much balanced, I went into what I call the "male god mode" after their dad's death. Being a Libra/Scorpio cusper it's easy to see how I swung so far. Since Dec 1, 2007, I have been in the act of re-centering, and I'm very pleased with the progress being made. Great, powerful, and awesome things have been happening.

On Aril 6, 2008 I went outside to catch some sunshine. As I laid down I said the following, to the Power, aloud:

"I just need some Vitamin D...haven't had any in a while and I need it to be healthy. Everyone needs it to be healthy. If you have anything else for me, go ahead. I'll receive it. I'm receptive."

Immediately I received a sign, but I had no idea what it meant, so yesterday I asked the I Ching what it meant. My answer was 1 with the 1st, 2nd, and 6th lines changing, which took me to a 31. The Power knows that when I get three changing lines, I go with the middle one.

A Follow up Tarot and Rune agreed.

In my opinion this answer is a good one for me. It is telling me that all will be well if I am receptive and correct, and for me to be patient and stay where I am for now. Is this a proper impression that I am getting? Is there something I am missing?

If anyone has any thoughts on the interpretation of 1.1.2.6>31, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help and for being patient with me!

Hi "B.A.",

Sounds like you have been through a difficult time. I admire your search for spiritual wisdom to rebalance your life.

I think you might not make the best use of the I Ching if you ask it to interpret symbols from other sources. I recommend you ask directly about your current situation, and in particular, what you can do. The Yi will respond with some combination of poetic imagery and hard-nosed advice. In my experience, it's useful to then ask another system to comment on the images from the Yi. For example, if the Yi has a picture of someone who is a visitor, then ask the tarot, "Who is the visitor?" Usually follow up questions to the Yi itself will bring further clarity.

I also wonder where you came up with this rule: "The Power knows that when I get three changing lines, I go with the middle one." That seems to be an arbitrary selection, rather than looking at what all three lines have to say. In your current reading, it would lead to missing the point!

Hexagram 1 is the beginning: pure yang, the force of heaven taking action in human life. Doing the right thing at the right time. Establishing a form. Lightning out of the thunderstorm.

1.1 Not yet the time for action. Stay true to yourself and wait for an opportunity to be who you really are. Don't let impatience or anxiety get you to conform to a situation that squeezes you into its mold.
1.2 Now is the time to move into the appropriate field. You might not yet be recognized for what you have to offer. Don't let that keep you from seeking a positive connection with the most important people.
1.6 Don't try to push yourself beyond what you can do. If you arrogantly try to exceed your limits, you will wind up with regret.

Putting this together: Know yourself and your limitations. With a spirit of humility, put yourself into a situation where you can reach out to the highest quality, most important people.

Do you see how important the outer lines of this sandwich are in setting boundaries on the activity of the middle line? If you try to be active as 1.2, without making sure the time is right per 1.1, and without a spirit of humility as per 1.6, you'll get into trouble.

31 is a solid foundation for relationships between people, using the metaphor of a lake on a mountain to represent interactions between women and men. Courtship is a process requiring perseverance and respect. A superior person is approachable, which makes people receptive to teaching.

From your positive interactions described in the hex 1 lines, you will become like either the mountain or the lake. I think the lake applies: you will be teachable and approachable, letting you learn from someone who is like a mountain in your life.

Hi, Ben. Thanks for responding. Does everyone here use the "use all changing lines" approach? I can't remember where I got it, but somewhere I read that when there are three to use the middle one, and that's the method I've been using. I really wish I knew where I read it so that I could tell you.

I apologize if I wasn't very clear. I wasn't asking it to interpret a symbol from another source. I was asking it to interpret a “sign” that was given to me, by the Power, immediately after I spoke aloud to the Power.

It wouldn't be a good idea for me to go into detail right now about what I mean by “sign“. No one here knows me, and some may not understand--but it wasn't a symbol. I asked the Yi what the “sign” from the Power meant. Kind of like asking the Power what the Power meant.

By "Power", I guess some would call it God or Goddess or Tao or whatever word they choose to use. I'm calling it the Power here. I hope that is OK with everyone, and that it won't cause trouble or spark any debates. I'm perfectly content to allow others to call it what they wish...I hope I can as well. LOL!

Probably about setting your life in order once again but being careful to not go to extremes with your behaviour.

Hex 31 suggests the possibility of a new man in your life.

I dont feel there is any rule about multiple changing lines, and sometimes if there are more than two, it is helpful to just grok the essence of the two hexagrams........in this case: Creative Power via an Influence, or perhaps Creative Power of Attraction....or Creative Source is connected to you, influencing you...those simple interpretations seem to fit in this case as you asked about the sign you received after asking for one. You exercised creative power and attracted the sign, the Power responded to you. Altho the reading may not be telling you what the sign meant, it could be that the message is that you are heard, you are connected.....and that's a good sign in and of itself. Sometimes the best "signs" dont say much more than that: the Force is With You......a good time to keep the connection alive..keep asking for guidance
