Howdy folks. I have been thinking that there are similarities between 25 and 62, mainly in the respect that both seem to be about not having expectations. It seems that 62 is about not having expectations or lowering them because whatever the querent is asking about is going to turn out to be insignificant. 25 seems to be about letting go of expectations because dwelling on them could cause problems with the outcome of whatever the querent is asking about. Does anyone have any other thoughts? Is there another way I should be seeing these two hexagrams?

Howdy, Artio.

A couple thoughts. Some hexagrams have subtle but significant differences. While 25 includes the unexpected, due to not having preconceived motives, 62 is more about keeping a low profile while crossing a great pass or mountain. I think 62 has more to do with modesty, in terms of not drawing attention to yourself, than 15 does, which has more to do with equalizing extremes, letting ones actions speak rather than ones words about those actions, and about being genuine or authentic.

Another pair that appear to share much in common are 16 and 51, but there are differences, even though they both have the sense of being shaken by thunder. One can be in a state of shock without even being aware of it. That's how I usually experience it, and it's how most trauma patients experience it as well. 16 often is connected with imagination and powerful emotions and even visions, which connects it to ether-realms, including departed ancestors and dynamic dreams, as well as the movement created by music.

Hi Sooo. So you feel that 62 is just about keeping a low profile? I've come across others who feel it's stongly about keeping one's expectations very low. That's even the resonance I feel when I receive 62 in a reading. I admit that it's a Hex I don't understand very well.

Hi Artio,

A flying bird brings a message: it is well to remain below. Not a good time to be soaring. It is a good time to exceed in things normally considered to be small, even insignificant, such as conserving, economy, mourning, staying close to the earth. That doesn't necessarily contradict lowered expectations, especially if they happen to be very high during that time, but I don't see it as the being the emphasis. More like being big in small things, but small does not imply unimportant. Its augury is great promise and fulfillment. I've also read 62 as being attention to detail, and I don't think that's too far off.

If you imagine crossing over a mountain pass during a thunder storm (trigrams), you instinctively keep low, not climb a tall tree, where lightening is most likely to strike. Saving your life is pretty important stuff, conserving your water and your energy, considering danger, etc. It's a good time to be humble. Doing those things is fortunate for you, and I'd say they give cause to keep expectations for survival on the good foot. Also, when in an unfamiliar environment, such as crossing that mountain, not drawing the mountain lion's attention is wise. Attention to these things can only be beneficial during such a time. These are metaphors of course, which is the language of the Yi.

It's not so unlikely that 62 and 25 could appear together in the same reading, but 25 speaks of expansion and determination, but going about it in an unassuming way, and relies on nature rather than strictly ones own cleverness. There is still thunder, but its under the influence of heaven. Those are conditions for growth. It's still best to not focus on the harvest but on plowing the field. Kind of an "if you build it, they will come" idea. However, innocence is not to be confused with naivety. That would be shortsighted. Not all unexpected surprises are positive, so it pays to be prepared for setbacks, as happens with agriculture. But those things do not cause one to give up the tending of crops. The emphasis is still on growth.

I think hexagram titles can sometimes be misleading. Our brain tends to pick up on key words and can leave out the context, specifics and bigger idea.

Looking at the trigrams:

25. is made up of Thunder below and Heaven above. It depicts some sort of dramatic bold action - Thunder - which then can go on and on and on, like Heaven, like a shout creating echoes.

If you consider the sequence of the hexagrams it seems to me that 24. depicts a coming home, a regrouping, a chance to pause and consider everything one has learned, and then 25 is a bold attempt to start out once again to try out new theories, to incorporate what one has learned and now to try again to live according to one's beliefs, a grand experiment to see what life is all about, to find out what we are all about.

62. is made up of Mountain below and Thunder above. It depicts a wall or protective barrier below suggesting that rather than starting out with a daring challenge as did Thunder in 25., now one has learned enough about who they are. their own temperament and how they effect their world, and so now one no longer charges out innocently just to see what will happen, but instead knows to maintain a protective Mountain around the self, and so keep all the chaos, Thunder, of the larger world outside.

If you consider the sequence of the hexagrams it seems to me that 61.Inner Truth depicts some sort of inner realization which then leads to being able to clearly see what the 62. Details are that need to be attended to, to maintain it.

For example, at hex 25.we may Innocently think we're going to live forever but by 61. Inner Truth we recognize that this particular lifetime is finite and this realization may spur us to put our affairs in order, write out a will and in general take care of the Details so one can be at peace even though we now realize that eventually all the little foxes have to cross the big river.
