Hello there!

Brainstorming ideas for opening a brand new business...

I asked the Iching: what is it that people need the most now days (that I can offer them?)

Answer is 27.2

I don't think the answer is food.. I believe there is something more profound in this answer!

What do you think?!

There's very little to go on here, but one thing does stand out. The line 2 advice is not to seek (or offer) what is at the summit, and your reference to "something more profound". This is similar to leaving the path to seek nourishment from high or lofty places.

Generally, it is good business to find an unfilled niche and then to fill it, rather than trying to create the need or hunger for what you desire to feed or provide. This fits with the idea of the changing or relating hexagram of 41, the empty bowl.

One way is to ask. This requires a medium or network (focus group) to reach the potential market with the question, what do you want/need? For many goods, the internet has replaced the local market, except for basics of most food and services; things you'd find on the regular path, essentials. So it depends if you're talking about providing an internet source or a "brick and mortar" shop.

I wonder if you are being encouraged to ask a different question? That rather than asking the IC what do others need, ask what would nourish you? I actually thought your original question was a good one but 27.2 reads to me like the I Ching is saying before you can take care of others you must take care of yourself. And I guess that is smart advice. I mean, sure, perhaps you could have a very lucrative business supplying do-dads to dodos but would such a job really nourish you? On the other hand maybe your great passion is playing the flute and that by giving your flute playing some quality time and attention the universe will then provide a means for you to keep that passion going.
Another idea that occurs to me is that as 27 does refer to food you might make a point of feeding your body the best quality diet you can afford at this time. The physical body has instincts and as you treat your animal well it will use it's instincts to continue to guide you to the food it likes - meaning your body's own instincts will make sure money comes to you if it knows that money will go to feeding it well.

Hope this helps,
rosada

With 27.2 you want to meet authentic needs, basic needs first. Set sights humbly instead of loftily (Zhi 41).
That means to look for the niche first and adapt to that, rather than enter with big ideas of your own.
If you're looking at making a living in a specific location, a sit-down with members of the local chamber of commerce to ask what's missing in the local economy couldn't hurt.

Thank you for your helpful insights!

Following Rosada suggestion I asked What will really nourish me?
the answer is 56.2.3
Hex 56 can be appropriate since I have an option to move to a different country.. option that I'm struggling with because ... when your not in your 20'S anymore.. moving very far away from your roots..is not so easy!
But I don not understand line 3.

So i asked for a deeper insight on what nourish me..
answer is 42.4

What do you think?
(to give you a better background I'm 34 completely stuck with my carrier. I'm to that point when you ask yourself ..What do you want to be when you grow up?)

I think this answer is asking you to ask yourself; "What are YOUR needs" ; to discover how you can help others. The best ideas stem from an obstacle you naturally encounter in life; that inspire some form of invention. The answer is inside yourself.

One of the reasons for writing the question down is so you can't change it afterwards.

A business is not to fulfill your needs but the needs of customers. I've witnessed literally hundreds of businesses open and go out of business simply because they were in that business because it was something that interested them (like their personal hobby), but not something there was a market demand for. It's great when it meets a consumer demand and is personally enjoyable, but a thriving business is solely dependent upon an existing niche for what you are selling.

According to Dun & Bradstreet and INC. magazine, 33% of all new businesses fail within the first six months. Fifty percent of new businesses fail within their first two years of operation and 75% fail within the first three years.

There can be several reasons for this, but the #1 reason is the business did not effectively fill an existing niche within their market.

But that's no reason to stop enjoying your hobby and personal interests.

As 56.2.3 - 64 does seem to refer to your option of moving, I suggest you look at that more closely. It maybe that this is indeed a good next step or it maybe that once you have given it your full attention some other option will appear.

On the psychological level, people need

1. regularity and order: propriety
2. something or someone to care for (affection)
3. attention, recognition
4. expression, individuality
5. conceptual understanding
6. loyalty
7. adventure, excitement
8. excellence, competition
9. social harmony

These are the nine Points on the Enneagram of Personality. Everyone needs all nine, but each ego specializes on one Point: I am of value because I am _________. Which are you? The casting 27.2 > 41 suggests that you excel because you are caring. Therefore, a business involving caring for others will accord with your personality.

Let's see... Nourishment - Decrease.
How about coming up with a weight loss plan? Write a cookbook!
The I Ching Diet: Daily Affirmations to Nourish The Soul and Decrease Cravings.
You could write it now while you still have your paycheck, sell it online and
56.2.3 - 64, don't quit your day job till the book tours start.

To make them self-empowered, independent from other sources (above and below), self-sustainable.

Some esoteric/spiritual school maybe, decrease of the lower (physical) in favor of upper (spiritual).

"Give man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".

Richmond 27:
To provide what others need to fill their form, follow the pattern of their choice.
For our own we follow ours.

The advice to look for the interests of others instead of your own, do some research, watch at people's behaviour. (Sooo mentioned it).

Or some basic needs that can be fulfilled here and now (not in future and in the past) - food, barber shop, cobbler (I agree with bradford) .. you get the idea.

It sounds like its saying people need nourishment in a way that leads to diminishing. In other words eating healthy. Wilhelm says something about counting on higher ups to tell us how to nourish ourselves leads to misfortune. Alot of foods out there are highly processed and even some touted as healthy, aren't.

Personally, I went through a period where I felt bloated for hours after eating and felt sick all the time. In the end figured out that I have gut yeast.

Now I combat this by making a fruit and veggie smoothie one glass once a day. No more bloat and I'm slimming down without any extra effort..

Years ago I signed up to be a distributor for Herbalife, a vitamin company. I didn't ever try to make it my Career, but it did seem as if when ever I needed some extra cash the Universe would send me a customer. I have a friend who buys Viagra at a discount and makes several hundred dollars a month just keeping his friends happy. Someone else I know gets wine at wholesale and uses it to barter. So people have a variety of small needs. Maybe you could think about having a few of a variety of things people need tucked away in the trunk of your car and see which ones sell...

update!!!!

Dear all,

I definitely need to update this post because now the answer is clear to me!

Your inputs were great!.. so I started thinking about what really fulfill me what I'm good at, what is that people need... etcc...

I narrow down all of this and I came out whit the idea (actually was my dream since I was a kid) to open a school!.. a school for personal growth, a school for everybody, where I can offer people the opportunity to learn, to develop something they need, or take a course where they can learn something fun and meet and join with other people!..

THe amazing part is that since this idea is taking shape, they contact me from a brand new location where a group of people has open a "farm to table" super market and a restaurant where thy cook all the products (organic food) they produce. Since it is a beautiful location with lots of rooms still available..They asked me if I would like to start with organizing courses in Nutrition and healthy lifestyle!!

I was astonished!..

I'm based in Italy where Nutrition has never been considered a "problem" since the Mediterranean diet is considered a healthy diet!.. But in reality things have chanced here too!

I traveled a lot in the US (california mostly) where this field has become almost a trend, but in Italy is still something people they barely acknowledge!

this would be the beginning of something totally new!

So the key was education.. for a healthy life... beginning form food!!

THank you!

Larouge, I'm sorry, but I'm about to be a gloomy rain cloud...:cloud: :cloud:. I think you're moving a bit fast here.

Are you giving anything up to do this? Is it costing you money, are you giving up an existing decent job, anything significant like that? What is your current life like - good, bad, indifferent?

41 as the relating hexagram in 27.2 > 41 could indicate sacrifice will be involved - 41 isn't supposed to involve a sacrifice greater than you can afford to make, but still, I'd make sure of that.

56.2.3 > 64 - this is the really problematic reading (in my opinion, of course).

64's name is "Before Completion." I'm not sure, but in this case it might mean "before you make a final commitment."

The lines seems striking:

56.2
'Traveller comes to a resting place,
Cherishes his own,
Gains a young helper.
Constancy.'
(all quotations are from Hilary's translation)

That would be lovely, if it stopped there, but it doesn't. Line 3 follows:

'Traveller burns down his resting place.
Loses his young helper.
Constancy: danger.'

That's why I asked you about the current state of your life. Those lines as a pair sound a bit alarming, I think. You find a resting place, and gain a young helper. Then - poof! - next thing you know, you've burned the resting place, lost the helper, and it would be dangerous to persist in this. If that describes how this business will affect you, it doesn't sound good.

I don't think the 'helper' has to be a person. It could be anything you currently possess which helps you in some way. For example, it could mean your money, if you'll have to spend it on this business - or an existing job - whatever it is, the reading says you possess it now, but you'll lose it. (Edited: at least the way I'm seeing it.)

I realize the question you asked when you got 56.2.3 > 64 was not about the prospects for the business. As far as I can tell, you never asked that question. Here's what you asked, if I didn't miss anything:

(1) what is it that people need the most now days (that I can offer them?) 27.2 > 41

(2) What will really nourish me? 56.2.3 > 64

(3) deeper insight on what nourish me 42.4 > 25

You never asked Yi about the prospects for this business, and you never asked Yi about the basic, preliminary idea of opening some sort of business in the first place. However, I'm sure Yi knew what was in your head - intention to do so - and Yi might have been saying, wait just a minute... .

Take heed of what Sooo posted, and don't think it can't pertain to you or the group you're joining.

Also - could 56.2.3 actually describe "what will really nourish" you? For that to be true, it seems to me Yi would have to be saying that burning your resting place and losing your helper will somehow nourish you. I don't think it is saying that; I think Yi is trying to get your attention.

I never understand 42.4, so I can't speculate on that one.

Now - if there's no personal risk involved, and/or if your life is not great as it is and you have nothing to lose, then I'm not thinking about this properly and it might be fine.
