I am in the middle of a very long interviewing and "wooing" process with a job i want very much. For the past month and a half I have undergone several application processes and a couple of interviews (for the same job). I have been told I am one of the final candidates, but am awaiting a final interview with a panel discussion. The panel will consist of the main executives, some of the board, and the potential staff I will be leading should I get the job.

The Yi has accompanied me through every part of this process with great results so far. The majority of the hx's have been in the nourishment category (5, 27, 50, 48) with a lot of interplay with 11, 12, 63, and 64. In other words, the answers have been very thematic and quite clear.

However, I have been continuing the job search on the side "just in case". But I haven't bothered to ask yet about the general job search outside of this particular one I want. So to the question, "In terms of my general job search, where should I be focusing my energy right now?" I received 40.1.5.6 --> 10.

And for the first time I totally have no clue what I am supposed to get from this. In some ways it seems as if it is referring to only the one particular job and not the search in general. Everything about it makes me feel as if I asked the wrong question, but got the right answer, and the only way to understand it is to figure out what my question should have been.

Lengthy and confusing, my apologies. But any insight received will certainly ease my confusion.

Thanks in advance.

Okay, you're very familiar with the Yi. But perhaps instead of focussing on the main meaning of 40, which is something like 'release from tension' or 'deliverance', maybe look at the lines in the text, as if they were directly answering your question. You asked 'where should I focus my energy', and the Yi says 'advantage western south', a location which I've always interpreted as meaning 'a supportive milieu'. I think that's really useful in your case actually, cuz now you can ask yourself the question 'how supportive is the dream job at the place I've been wooing?' If it seems to be a supportive environment for you, then the answer seems to be: you should be focussing your energy right at the place you're trying to get into. And then there's the rider: but watch your step. Which means the job's not in the bag, but it's worth pouring energy into trying to get it. As for the lines, 40.6 sounds like someone getting the job, doesn't it?

Anyway, if I've seen something in what you got, then the general meaning of 40 becomes clearer, something like 'getting the job is surely a release from tension, but watch your step cuz it's early days'.

thanks, dobro...

i've been perusing the threads and i've enjoyed how you cut to the chase when you respond to questions. its so helpful and direct.

your thoughts on the southwest just reminded me that some years ago i used to associate the direction with home, though i cannot remember why it became that way, other than at the time i was moving around a lot, and home was literally in the southwest direction. supportive millieu is definitely similar in feeling to home. (and the job in question is totally a supportive environment in my eyes.)

so that being said, i think i agree with you. the change to 10 makes sense in this light because really, in the end, i'm not as qualified for this position as the others are. so i would be the one in the weak position treading into the sphere of the strong.

The risks I love to take fall into the category of what I call 'familiarity + 1'. Just new enough to keep things interesting, but building on a skillset I already have. Qualifications are just window dressing.

My first thought on seeing your answer was the whole 'just incase'(cautious 10) scenario is released (40) hmm and why would that be ? Like Dobro said 40.6 looks like someone getting the job. Thing is not sure how useful that is to you right now, I guess it wouldn't pay to relax as if the job were yours already and certainly 10 could pointing to continued need for circumspection...Anyhow i think if it were my answer i might see the 40 as releasing from that 'just in case' concern.

The initial changing line, 40:1, as well as the resulting 10, both sound to me
as if saying to you that you're doing well to be cautious and continue looking
for another job. The other two lines (40:5 and 40:6), i don't think they are
directly related to you, ie, the outcome of those does influence your situation,
but i don't think it's something you need to do.

Line 40:1 makes a nice introduction to the whole subject. 'No blame'. You
are fine, you're doing what's right.

40:5: This describes a ruler who needs to remove everything and everyone
who opposes order and peace. This person is working really hard to eliminate
all 'inferior men'. This refers either (a) to the elimination process that they are
effecting, till they get to the right candidate; or (b) to internal problems they
have been having between them, eg 'office politics'. In your situation (a) would
sound more plausible, but, if you think about it, the ones to be rid of are
people who are injurious, who cling in order to harm, which doesn't sound
much like other candidates. I'd be inclined to go for (b).

40:6: The inferior small people of 40:5 having been eliminated, there still
remains one. But this one is not just a common petty lowly person - this is
actually an evil person, who holds a high position. I don't think that the
falcon/raptor/hawk refers to the position itself. This is not just any bird,
and this is not just 'something' which is really high. This is something or
someone 'evil', holding a high position. Again, going back to the possible
scenarios of 40:5, here we either have the options that (a) having eliminated
the lower candidates, there is one more to be eliminated (eg your most
powerful adversary for this position), and the implication here would be
that, 'will they manage to see through that person?'. Or (b), petty office
politics will get out of the way, but still, there is one person with lots of
power in there, who is quite corrupt, and someone else in there will first
need to get rid of them, before any real progress can be made.

I know this sounds a bit bizarre, but this is how it sounds to me, and i
thought i'd post it just in case it could have some relevance. At least you
know for sure that you're doing the right thing, and that it is good for you
to continue keeping your options open.

Good luck with it!

Well, at the very least we all so far seem to agree that the hx's are referencing the one job specifically, and not advising about the very general 'everything-else'. That may be the source of my confusion-- I was really wanting to be informed about my search outside of the one job, but clearly I will need to formulate a better question for that issue.

Ah, Trojan, for myself to cease searching in just-in-case mode would be a complete revolution of my nature *grin*. But you have me thinking a bit, perhaps the deliverance is about my general apprehension about my qualifications. Perhaps it is just window dressing, as dobro suggests. Extravagant dust-catching superfluous window dressing. (As opposed to my bare-bones nekkid what you see is what you get window.)

Diamanda... I can see the inferior element as being an agency. The organization is non-profit, so all funding must be fought for tooth and nail. I know their biggest grant is about to run out in 6 weeks, and there are others which need to be attended to. It is possible that they haven't actually secured the funding for the position, which is speculation at best, but would explain some of their needing to assertively act. The inferiors in this case would be the details they need to attend to prior to even hiring.

It could, as you say, refer to a specific candidate. Or perhaps an influential board member. So then, either way, the deliverance would refer to my responsibility in the matter. Where I am absolved of needing to DO something, and the situation would remain in other hands at the moment. (This is exactly what you are saying though isn't it?) And, of course, due to the precariousness of the situation, I am wise to continue searching elsewhere.

Which raises the question, honestly-- Is it really possible that fate hasn't decided these events already? That I could truly either get or not get this job, and either scenario fits fine into my destiny in the eyes of the Yi? Argh. The mad musings begin.

"

It depends on one's beliefs in fate. I'm not sure if i believe in any form of
fate or not, but if you think about it, the vast majority of life's situations
can easily be explained as cause and effect. And the causes are a lot of the
time decisions taken by humans. In your situation, there are very many
parameters involved, and many humans involved. This is an organisation,
where many people work, then there is funding involved, and that is another
whole set of humans, etc etc. Surely we can't expect the I Ching to know
exactly what all of them are going to decide? And apart from decisions there
is so much more which could alter things. What if the wife of the person
responsible for the funding decision is pregnant and the baby decides to
arrive the night before an important meeting, which then falls through,
which then delays procedures, which then blah-blah and so on, of course
this is just a fictional example of just one tiny detail which could affect a
whole series of events. I'm only trying to say here that, since so many people
are involved, it is quite possible, and very logical, and would make total sense
that it is not yet decided if you're going to get the position or not. So, what
can you do but wait, while keeping your options open. Not ideal, and nobody
likes uncertainty, but what can we do...
