43.6 > 1 Why does it indicate "misfortune"?

Ok, my turn...

My usual habit is to ask a general question in the morning, usually "This Day," to get a sense of where I am. For my recent birthday I asked about "This Year" -- something I never asked before. I received 43.6 > 1. This did not fill me with unmixed delight...

43 overall seems quite positive. I've been getting various "breakthrough" messages for some time now so this is not a surprise. As an artist I like the idea of 1-Creative as a resulting hex. But why does that top line indicate "misfortune" although the Judgment is fairly positive? Does it warn of a specific misfortune, or just a general warning that all things change, much like the "in the eighth month" caveat of Hex 19? If I continue on my present course, does it promise a 1-Creative situation, or is there something still to change, root out, bring to daylight, that prevents me from getting to 1? (This latter seems quite atypical of the IC)

Any thoughts, experiences, recommendations?

I'm not one for yearly, weekly or even daily readings. They tend to generate way more angst than they help as the querant can never be sure what area of their life the answer refers to and then seems to spend the entire year/ day/week looking out for the manifestation of reading to occur. And of course ordinary psychology says if they are primed to lookout for it they will surely see it

All I can say about what 43.6 may mean for you is off the top of my head if it were my reading I would take it as a caution to make it known if you need help, tell others how you feel, reach out. The danger in 43.6 is in not speaking out or not calling out.

I have to say I tend to react quite sharply to this line (rightly or wrongly I don't know) taking it as a cue to share whats troubling me and to ask for others support or to express generally what I want or need etc.

The fan yao is 1.6...arrogance. maybe this has to do with the arrogance that comes with the attitude that you need no help ? You need to make sure you express yourself and get heard this year maybe because it isn't a time you can successfully rely on yourself alone...and neither should you try to.

The hexagram is about announcement.

Hilary's book:

'Deciding, tell it in the king's chambers,
With truth, call out, there is danger.
Notify your own city. . .'

And line 6

Hilary's book:

'Not calling out.
In the end pitfall.'

Line 6 is beyond the action of the hexagram. Something needful has not been said, therefore misfortune. Perhaps you are not fully affirming your art talent, and it needs to be brought into the light.

Thanks for the insights. Still a bit confused about why 43.6 should provoke "misfortune," though my next daily reading was in fact Hex 19, which indicates misfortune "in the eighth month." So probably IC was having a joke on me, as it often does, and the "misfortune" is just the turn of the cosmic wheel.

I regularly note that the resultant hex of one daily reading turns up as the initial hex a day or two later. And so it is in this instance. No matter what I ask for the first reading of the day, the IC will tell me what it thinks I should know according to its own logic...

The only misfortune would be the result of not paying attention to the counsel in the line. The counsel in the line says that we must be thorough in everything we do. The line counsels against carelessness. It does not mean you are gong to have misfortune over the coming year.

Some of the translations I have add that once the "getting rid of the devil" job of 43 is done, one still has to be on guard in 43.6, and notice any small seeds of the devil might left behind, to be able to keep them from rooting and growing. Missing that will lead to misfortune. For example you'll start to smoke again.

The whole sign is about the last bit of unresolved stuff appearing very easy to overcome, represented by the soft line on top. It appears so easy but at the same time it represents the hexagram as a whole - five firm lines confronted by the last soft one on top... it needs firm action to do the last step, whatever it means for the question in mind!

I got this line a while back... I had asked about a casual relationship that I felt was a little too casual. I think it meant to let the other person know where I stood, and if they didn't like it, send them packing. As for yearly readings, why not? I wouldn't put too much stock in them, but I've done them for fun, and have found some useful insight there. These kinds of questions I've found can relate to themes coming up for me in a year, and the I Ching reading will often resonate with the overall astrological theme in my progressed chart. 43 sounds to me like maybe a time to set boundaries, make who you are clear, etc... Could just be simple self expression... Time to shine? With 28 as the external hex, I would think about where I felt like I was being pushed to the brink.

This question was asked in 2010 so advice for the cast as a yearly reading is 3 years too late.


Apart from updating one's own threads I don't know why people tack comments onto ancient threads because then everyone who follows thinks it's current and gives advice to one long departed.

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this, but I just found this thread about 43.6 and it was helpful to me (thank you for those that contributed here) so thought I might contribute with what happened to me with this reading and its conclusion:

Yesterday I just lost my wallet, after going to the movies. They didn't let me get back because the next movie had started and the theater was full, and since I was with my kid decided to get back home and come back at the end of this session.
While home I asked the I Ching about my wallet, the answer was 43.6 > 1, and that's when I stumbled upon this thread. Indeed 43 and 1 seemed good in this case (I just need to get back there and get the damn wallet) but was wandering about 43.6. Turns out that it was indeed about asking for help: I went back, asked the manager (nobody had returned anything yet, but he was happy to point out to the person in charge of cleaning the room at the end of the movie). So the lady in charge of cleaning let me in during the final credits of the movie and was able to go in there while the room was empying but the lights were still down. With my phone lamp I was able to immediately locate my wallet (almost like I was magnetically drawn to its location, a bit hidden behind the seat, that was "funny" too).

Anyhow, the reading was auspicious as I expected, but yes, with a little bit of determination and help needed.
