I've had a tough year, not enough paid work, setbacks in my art practice, financial struggle, too much solitude, and a run of health concerns simultaneous with poor (but expensive!) health insurance. I asked the I Ching what my body needs for health and vitality, and got the encouraging (I think) but somewhat mysterious 44.5>50. I would be grateful for any ideas about how to work with this reading. Thank you!

This may sound silly to take line 5 so literally, but given the exact nature of your question, rather than the circumstances that you've described: eat lots of fruit and vegetables. High fiber including unsalted or low salted nuts may also be implied given that the lower trigram refers to wood as well as wind.

I can personally testify to the benefits of this kind of diet.

Hi sabina, I'm with sooo on this - eat plenty of seeds and the vegetables that are in season in your area. It is said that you should eat the vegetables that are in season that are grown or appropriate to the geographical region and climate you live in. - Liss

Thank you both very much! My diet is pretty good, as I'm an organic foods expert and committed to good fresh food. I've had both kidney stones and diverticulitis so I have to eat a healhy diet, high in fiber, and drink a lot of water. I walk a lot and I practice yoga and meditate. I don't smoke, rarely drink. I'm not sure that my basic health habits are inadequate; that's why I asked the question, it just doesn't add up to a sense of vitality.

Well if that's the case then obviously you're missing something. Me too I've looked after my health for years as best I can after experience CFS and Ross River Virus and still my health and vitality haven't really returned. The other day I discovered a homeopathic remedy that seems suited to me and also a lack of Vit C seems to be the key although, I would say my intake of Vit C on a daily basis usually should be sufficient, I've also opted for a supplement.
The homeopathic remedy really seems to be the thing that's finally giving me back my health and vitality. Just thoughts I thought I'd share. - Liss

Wow, that's interesting. hmm, maybe the Yi is pointing to an excess of some of those foods then, and that could fit with the 44 aspect of being too aggressive with your diet. Too much of a good thing.

I recall twice when eating certain foods renowned for being rich in fiber and natural vitamins caused digestive distress, namely, broccoli, which I love but which doesn't like me. This wasn't just a short term thing, it was part of my regular diet because it was abundantly available. Once I backed off of my indulgence in that and of high fiber in general, I got better. Yet now I can tolerate those high fiber foods. The difference is that, in that past time my life was filled to the brim with stress. Stress plus those high fiber foods did not go well together. Now that I've retired and have found a low stress environment, those high fiber and mineral foods are processed easily. That stress may have also been a 44 factor, and it did sap the energy and vitality from me. Your original post mentioned a number of stress inducing difficulties, and perhaps this does not "marry" well with your otherwise healthy diet. 44 says do not marry this maiden. In general, maybe you're trying too hard. That can also stifle creativity as well as vitality, and can even effect your finances. Perhaps let things happen more than trying to make them happen. That fits with 44's message.

Another suggestion, if you're not already eating it regularly, is Greek Yogurt. I started a thread in Open Space about my 0 fat, plain Greek Yogurt addiction, and as an expert you're no doubt aware of the benefits attributed to it. If it's not part of your diet, you might try it.

I know of another case where the individual could not put on weight and was dangerously thin, and ate foods considered to be healthy. She began adding fatty meats to her diet, and from the reports I've gotten, she's gained weight and is more active again. So I wonder if you're getting enough protein in your diet, or, if you're a vegan, if that's not contributing to your problem. I think each one of us needs to find what our own body asks for, and that can change with our circumstances.

Not a vegan, eat fish (wild), chicken (organic), and occasionally red meat. I guess I really was searching for an interpretation of the hexagram and the reading that might not be so literal, as I'm pretty well informed about diet and eat moderately and well most of the time. My weight is normal for my age/height and pretty stable. I do not like Greek yogurt and don't have digestive distress. I appreciate these comments though - thank you everyone.

For a not so literal interpretation, I'd look to those moody elements surrounding your question, since temperament typically plays a rather large part of 44's dynamic. I think it boils (not meant literally :)) down to stress and urgency. It is best not to marry those tendencies. 50 can literally represent ones body, but symbolically can represent the soul, that container of our own ingredients. It's purpose is to refine, to take gross material and refine it, or to use an example of alchemy, to turn lead into gold.

Wishing you wellness.

What does my body needs for health and vitality?
44.5 > 50

Yang Wood in the pot. Could you handle hot pepper like jalapeno? It has done me good.

Nine in the fifth place means:
A melon covered with willow leaves.
Hidden lines.
Then it drops down to one from heaven.

Now is melon season. I take Xun to be willow, and the lines of Qian to be stripes on the melon.

I've had kidney stones

For me, B6 prevents the recurrence of kidney stones. I have taken it daily for forty years.

Hello to all

If I might make a suggestion/question - have you considered the Bach remedies? They purport to treat our psychological system - not suggesting any psychological problems. They look at our usual outlook on life, i.e. are we the anxious type; depressive; worrysome, critical etc. non-confident, like the limelight. I am quite critical so when I become overly so, I take Beech. Dr Bach maintained that our physical state was due to our mental state, which I believe to be true. Larch is to give confidence and that I take too. (My son infers that I don't need that) that's when I throw something at him!!!!
Hope you feel better soon.

Incidentally; I read only a couple of days ago of a woman who's health began to decline rapidly for no apparent reason. She asked for a spiritual reading and was given one answer "diet" she was quite miffed at this because she was a nutritionist and was eating lots of fish. Her doctor eventually found that she was being poisoned with Mercury from the fish

hi sabina,

44 has often come up for me showing function of hormones, also thyroid etc. It might help if you looked into that kind of stuff- hormones can really wreak havoc in our lives from the inside, specially for us women and specially as we begin getting older

Thank you meigga.
I appreciate all the very kindly given and generous advice so much -- you all have my gratitude for your gracefully worded suggestions and for taking the time to explore this with me.

I trained in using the Bach remedies at the original Bach center in Oxford and do use them, and I'm not eating that much fish, I promise you! I've worked in the natural and organic foods industry for many years as a researcher, writer, editor and educator and have a good knowledge base for diet and supplements. I like the Bach remedies very much, and appreciate their esoteric qualities.

After the events of the past few days I think the hexagram might have been suggesting that I consider protecting myself from people ("qi vampires" as one of my favorite astrologers calls them) who drain my spiritual energy, and one in particular. On a physical level I am feeling better and cautiously optimistic and I've connected a few dots to better understand why the kidney stones were recurring. Interestingly my doctor mentioned "psoas spasms" and I realized it may have been my practice of David Berceli's "Revolutionary Trauma Release" exercises that were triggering movement of kidney stones that may have been there a while -- so I'm seeing it all possibly as a healing process rather than a disease process. Those exercises are exactly designed to allow the psoas to release deeply held constrictions.

Interesting. I can see how this can fit your reading, in more than one way.

Thankyou sabina

Thankyou sabina for your reply. I find your reference to Vampires interesting. I had a neighbour who was supposed to be a psychic vampire and I believe she was. A magazine described them as a person who gives you things and wants your company and needs your life force to feed their own. Eventually everyone living in the block fell out with her, she left thankfully. Apparently some people aren't aware that they are psychic vampires but others do it deliberately. This woman was always hugging me and sitting up close, wanting to cover me with her blanket etc. I would find myself falling asleep in her company. My son who is psychic instructed me how to protect myself against her and how to surround my apartment with protective mirrors. It worked, she gave up on me.

A postscript to this - I saw my wonderful acupuncturist a few days ago and after listening to all that was going on with me, her immediate response was that I needed some protection from all that was going on around me. Apparently there are TCM points that are specifically protecting. I thought it was interesting in light of this reading last week and another facet of 44.5.
