Hi,
I've been reading - and appreciating this forum for a long time, but this is my first post. I feel as if I'm at something of a standstill in most areas of my life, and not sure where to put my energy to move forward. My job is okay but a bit of a dead end, I'm single and the only men in my life are ex-boyfriends where the energy is gone, I feel some need to move on from my location, and I have a number of creative interests but I'm not sure which to focus on, or how. I'm 52 years old, so it seems that there is more behind me than ahead.
I asked the I Ching, "What does the world need from me," and received 44.5 > 50.

I think there is a suggestion here of nurturing my gifts without seeking recognition, and maintaining a level of spiritual commitment and dignity, but I'm not sure. It feels pretty abstract, and I think I hoped for a more specific answer, but I would love to have some help with interpretation.

Thank you in advance! I've read the existing threads on 44.5 with interest, and there seems to be some consensus about luck, or fate, or an unexpected opportunity?

44.5. Very nice hex to receive in relation to your question. "Coming to meet" or an "encounter" of some kind where it drops into your lap like ripe fruit...Provided you maintain the correct attitude. No need to force things or look down on others or compare - just be open and receptive, while walking the middle path. This "encounter" could be a bloke, a connection within or an idea. Very often it refers to the opposite sex. Overall, this suggests a natural connection appearing when the time is right.

Themis and Topal, thank you so much for your encouraging replies - I appreciate them very much. So it seems that the world needs me to keep my heart and mind open and live with integrity, trusting that the path will open up. Easier said than done, but a good way to live!

Adding my three cents to the good interpretations already given:

Hex 50 is calling for a container -- to be contained.

Since you feel a strong need to be of service, then you need an image or an idea of how you might go about accomplishing that.

In other words, don't just sit around waiting for the world to come to you. Take hold of the steering wheel, Sabina, and get ready to go out for a drive. (That's a metaphor. Hexagram 50 doesn't mean that you have to own a car!)

Consider devoting some thought and time to getting clearer about what skills you have that you might use to help other people -- that could make a difference in their lives. You'll need to take the initiative and make it happen.

Thank you! I did ask "What is my life path," and got 48, The Well, unchanging. Okay, this is another hexagram I'm unsure about. Being a steady source of knowledge or of some other quality to the community? In some ways this is something I've done in my work as a writer.
Yet the advice about containment, about having a clear image of service, is very good; I think that's part of what I'm lacking, since I have trouble directing my intention without a clear sense of how to enact it in the world.

Thank you for all of these thoughtful responses - each comment brings me new things to consider. I'm fairly healthy and exercise regularly. So I think it's more the lack of love, purpose, and even excitement in my life; I've been alone for quite a long time, and I feel quite limited in my day job.

Patro, your comments about gossip are very interesting. I have a blog and a group on Facebook based on a philosophy of textile art and craft that I developed. I'd originally intended to create some kind of publication or organization around this idea. Many people have found it inspiring, but recently I became the target of a pretty nasty internet hate thread because of it, by some people who resented me for asking for attribution and credit for my work.

So in some ways, both of your points apply. It's been a challenge to rise above the gossip and focus on the wonderful people who support me. At the same time, if this idea is to become anything more after a few years of writing about it, I need both a new influx of energy and enthusiasm for it, and the help of others, and I'd have to organize anyone who was involved. I'm not confident in my leadership abilities. And to return to the first question, I've been unsure about whether this is something I should continue to pursue, or let it go; I've been struggling with it for quite a while, at the expense of my own art.

The hidden journal -- perhaps I shouldn't be writing so much online in the blog and group, for others to appropriate. Maybe the container of Hexagram 50 is about protecting my own work until I'm able to develop it more and create something solid.

Both Hexs 48 and 50 convey the idea of a person being a source of nourishment in their words/knowledge that they impart ... this could be your role which the IC is pointing out.
Protecting your work would certainly be a good initiative. As for gossip ... what can I say,
it'll always be around, espcially if you shine in some way 'It's better to be talked about than
not talked about at all" Oscar Wilde.

Sure looks like you can expect love to come back into your life ... that'll give you a boost of
