45 .4>8 Unchanging - What do I need to know about work this week

Hi everyone

I was just doing my weekly reading this week and asked what do i need to know going into this week re work, 45.4 changing to 8. The line seems favourable, some reason its not clicking. Its describing being unselfish. Doing things in the name of the ruler or bringing people together in the name of the ruler.

I took some notes but not sure exactly what i should be doing as i do want to follow the advice. I read some text that the line is related to passive virtues. I am not sure I even understand what a passive virtue is.

Is it like just letting things evolve naturally, I think this line is a little confusing although if you do understand it , it is favourable.

How does this relate to my work?

Hi Steve,

45.4 is a tricky line indeed. I think it carries the message of (trying to) being unselfish.
Didn't really get it until I sold my car and had it many times in process of selling the car.
In some other thread Liss had this line while asking whether a distant friend would remember and bring her some unique/tasty chocolate from a particular city that he is visiting. Nope he didn't bring any (she didn't ask for it).
For me 45 is now about sacrificing, letting go of desire or some things.

45, Wilhelm:

To bring great offerings creates good fortune.

45.4 → 8 (Holding Together), Daniels: The group works well towards the common good.
Wilhelm comments: he is not striving for any special advantages for himself but is working unselfishly to bring about general unity

I guess it really means be unselfish in your work, strive for common goals, and not individual/yours.
Hmm like forget your ego(45) and then people will find you more attractive(8), meaning they would like to join (8) you and form a group of some sorts. And being in a group(8) is better I suppose for achieving some things.

p.s. a couple of minutes later got an email from Qatar Airways which said:
Travel together, save together.
Save up to 45% when travelling in groups of 3 to 9 persons. LOL.

45.4 to 8 ~ "Change is coming, remain sovereign unto yourself."

I associate the phrase "passive virtue" with wu wei ~ doing nothing, neither more nor less, than the effortless action of our direct natural experience:

Accept what is given,
Do the right thing,
Make nothing of it.
[wash, rinse, repeat]

In this Taoist approach, the 'right' thing is getting done in life, naturally ~ not different than your heart beating and your lungs breathing ~ without the agency of an egoic doer ~ this is the Way.

It may sound insignificant (and be easily overlooked) from the point of view of a considering separate self, but the Sages say otherwise. In the Analects, Confucius says that emperor Shun stayed so close to the Way that he could order the world by "doing nothing."

So, passive in the sense of non-judging presence, while active in natural response ~ sets-up a resonance that can scale from one to empire ~ encompassing personal, familial and social harmony.

To release this power, remain sovereign over your own awareness, and respond to the ever-changing world with élan.

Hi Guys

Thanks so much for the in depth reply, yes Tim I remember that thread Liss had I remember thinking he might send the chocolates. You both have given clarity on the line, its like being reserved and thinking about whats good for everybody , employees and clients and putting them first. Its a bit like sending good Karma out into the world. The fact is I will never reach bigger goals unless i really think in this way. I cannot do everything myself so i do need help.

Like the saying things come back to you three fold. This can happen in a good or a bad way. I think there is a hint that you are on the correct path hence the line is favourable. Like their is satisfaction in giving and if you are known for this then people will trust and believe in you. This line seems to be very compatible in a work environment. Working for the State and therefore rising to a higher position due to your reputation that you are unselfish and look after others needs.

I think the line is suggesting a starting point to a favourable future. It is something I need to work on now its been brought to light. It also i think calls for a plan.

That would be interesting if you actually did get these elusive chocolates lol, the line would make sense as it would become favourable.
