Hello,

I have been getting into Swing classes (Charleston, Lindy Hop etc) recently and just loving it: there are lots of young people doing these classes, I'm moving and laughing, and remembering my love of dance. It has already invigorated my life, and given me something to look forward to ( I work very hard at a design agency, and the physical exercise has helped with stress)

I hope this doesn't sound boastful, but I'm quite a good dancer in that I can pick up dance steps very easily. I was a dancer from a very young age, and danced at quite a high level in ballet and ballroom for many years but I decided to go into other professions because the pay so very low in dance.

I asked what would be the outcome of me learning to swing dance? 46.3 > 7

To me part of this is quite clear: I would find it easy to progress but that perhaps it would be an empty city, which I'm taking from the hexagram 7 as a lack in a "leader". In dance we talk about a leader (traditionally a man) and a follower (traditionally a female). And I don't have a leader to go with to dance class. You don't need a dance partner at the classes, because we all rotate, and I go with my female friends and we have a great time. But still it would be nice to have a friend that I could dance with and train with for performances etc.

My own boyfriend works away during the week so doing the dance classes were a great way for me to get some fun exercise and not feel quite so alone while he is away.

My partner has been getting wonderful paid training in management of a health service in a small town four hours away from where we live. It is invaluable to him, and the experience he needs to move into more management roles. A few months ago my partner asked the I Ching what would be the outcome of him continuing to work out there. And the result was 46.3 > 7

What I told him was that to me that indicated a time of great expansion of knowledge, but that he would be away (well, der!) from the people that he loved. And it has been difficult for us both in that we don't see each other very often, and our lives are completely different.

I'm still not sure of patterns in the I Ching.
Is it of real consequence that we both received this same hexagram within a few months?

Thanks for your help

the empty city means that it looks like you are moving with clear progress, these dance classes are good for you

the army is the bond with your dance partner, you have strong feelings for or about him, or will soon, and you guys have the potential to form a kind of strong bond

the danger of the empty city is that while it looks like progress is clear, it is not assured, or rather, it looks like you can reach the goal, however it is not assured

the why comes in : looks like you will risk being accused because of your strong bond with your dance partner might seem ambigous to others and you could be accused, however there is no blame

when you asked, did you want to know if you should keep dancing or if dancing would help you reach your goals, this is saying you can, and gives a warning - progress and benefits might not be quite what you think, you will have to make a choice and defend youself or reputation as well in this situation

Hi Skittalion,
Thanks for your reply.
I do not have a dance partner, rather I just dance with everyone (as everyone in the classes do) on a rotational basis.

I guess i asked because I like it so much, and I was considering being more deeply involved in it: taking more classes and perhaps joining in the competition levels etc. In the back of my mind I was a little worried that perhaps being a great dancer would not be that great if I didn't have someone to dance with. There are often social dances at bars on Sunday afternoons, which I would love to go to, but it would be quite nerve racking to go alone.

But I guess, I love it. So I should not let the lack of a friend to dance with get in the way of enjoying dancing.
