Hello all

I recently asked the I Ching:

"How can I best do something satisfying and constructive with my life?"

I received hexagram 48 with moving lines 1 and 3, changing to hexagram 60.

Hmmm! I'm not sure I'm any the wiser, really!

I wondered if anyone would be interested in writing a couple of lines about this, to help me mull it over more objectively and clearly?

Thanks

I.

Hex 48.1,3 are basically saying that you are wasting your life at the moment, people tend not to respect you because you don't respect yourself, you have abilities but you ain't using them.

Hex 60 says to put limitations on your activities, it seems whatever you are doing in your daily life is totally wrecking your chances for a satisfying and constructive life. Too much partying? You have to set yourself achievable goals or otherwise all your dreams will be just that dreams.

Looks like you have your work cut out for you. It appears there's quite a bit of sludge gumming up the works, and before you can enjoy clear water you'll need to reline the well, or at least patch up the holes. It's a good idea to do the same in your clay bucket too. But don't worry, the well isn't going anywhere. When you're ready, it will be ready.

60 has properties of delineation, like rungs on a ladder, teeth on a comb, strings in a piano, numbers on a clock. This suggests organizing. To 'do something satisfying and constructive with your life' will require prioritizing, and then limiting your time, energy and focus on those priorities.

Hi i2k7 ... more objectively and clearly? ... I'll try:

48 Don't cross the river to get water (danish proverb)
When You try to understand a little more about life, You will find the most usefull knowledge in your nearby surroundings. The trick is to listen and learn from the experience of others. Nobody knows everything and that's why it´s important to be open and get more knowledge by talking with others without being "more wise" than You are or making things more complicated than they are in reality.

60 The silent agree (danish proverb)

48 was a reading I made recently. 60 indicate, that the best You can do is to express yourself better in words either talking or writing or both? I myself often write on forums to make my thoughts more clear. Your I Ching answer is pointing at communication as the keyword to your question. I hope these few words might inspire You :)

Here's something on 48.1. Remember that these people lived with wells, mostly the hand-dug kind that you can climb down into.
We had a well like this on the commune, and during the period where its maintenance was my personal duty, we had a major drought. Over the years there had been some silting so before the drought reached its worst, the water reached the mud. Note that the Zhi Gua for this line is Waiting (for Rain), a Hexagram about making the best use of the meantime.
This could be a bad situation if you just let it be, but if you have any energy at all, note that this is the perfect time to muck out the well and dig it a little deeper. At that stage there's also some skeletons and bodies of dead things down there. Wear gloves.
So by way of interpreting this particular line - it's good time to go more deeply into who you are and what you have to offer. But it's a getting muddy kind of work, not just saying airy fairy affirmations.

With foundation setting (a source of nourishment - 48) comes standardisations (60 - agreement on standards act to limit but also allow for establishing consensus).

From an XOR perspective, the line position PAIR of 1 & 3 are controlled by hexagram 36 and so bring out a focus on there being a need to cover up one's light since there are no likeminded about! What this 'says' is how hexagram 48 expresses the characteristics of hex 36 and it does that through behaviours described by hex 60.

Thus having a source of nourishment in these 'dark' times makes things not so dark in that there are only limits in activities, we can work since we have 'food' - and THAT in turn allows for establishing standards, consensus as one develops, agreements with those who were once 'not likeminded' to them becoming a touch 'likeminded'.

To establish rapport with others requires agreement - even if that is agreement to disagree, that act in itself establishes a link that can then be used as a channel to 'get through' to them. Modulations of that channel, and so a rhythm allows one to get through, in that the best way to get through a psychic wall is by using a wave (something advertising companies exploit ;-))

Hello all

Just wanted to say thanks again for your responses - I'm still reflecting on them and sitting with them days later, so I think that's a sign of an important casting & readings...... when the results reverberate on for a while afterwards..... so thanks all for your thoughts and insights, much appreciated.

Dear i2k7,
Just wanted to comment that sometimes the I Ching is giving us major lifetime insights and sometimes the advice is just for the next half hour. My take on your toss here is that you are being encouraged to clean out your drawers and bring things up to date. It may only take half a day, so no need to be overwhelmed by the serious tone of the hexagrams.
Once you've peeled off the dead skin or taken all the books back to the library you may find that your next best step becomes very obvious.
