I am creating a third webpage for each hexagram in the ICPlus page (http://members.iimetro.com.au/~lofting/IChingPlus ) to cover the XOR nature in more detail than in the summary form I have supplied in page 2.

Here is a draft format, please let me know what you dont like or dont 'get'.
-----------------------------------------------
63-Ness (Completion)

If we XOR hexagram 63 with any hexagram we will derive a description of that hexagram's 'complete' form, their 63-ness, where all is in the 'correct' places, is thus described by analogy to an other where this description is the closest one can get through reference to some other form; thus, for example, the complete form of 28 is described by analogy to the GENERAL, VAGUE, energy-expending nature of 54 (011110 XOR 101010 = 110100) - and the same for describing the complete form of 54 by analogy to 28.

It is the traditional focus on the line structure of 63 representing a template for all lines being 'correct' or 'not correct' that reflects detecting the 'complete form' of a hexagram and using XOR allows us to reveal in detail what the ancient perspectives were trying to communicate.

The 63-ness of 28 is described by analogy to 54, as is the 63-ness of 54 described by analogy to 28. Both 28 and 54 cover notions of high energy expenditure, be it general excess or the going beyond what is required to aid someone, or the initial energy expenditure in the beginning of something, be it intentional or demanded by context (and so the inclusion in the meaning of 54 of the notion of immaturity.)

Here is a list covering these sorts of pairs where the list is ordered in the binary sequence (111111 to 111000 - covering the Heaven octet - I have made some annotations to start off with to get the 'idea'):

01 / 64
111111 XOR 101010 = 010101 - the main focus of pure yang is that it is a realm of perpetual mediation, of perpetual practice, training, development, of skills and as as such 'never stops'. This sense of 'never stopping' is a fundamental property of 01 and is reflected in analogy to hex 64 with its focus on remaining open, on being prone to small 'errors' and so in need of eternal practice to make things 'right'.

010101 XOR 101010 = 111111- the main focus here is the description of the 'complete' 64 by analogy to under-played characteristics of 01 - the sense of 'eternal mediation', mis-sequencing requires practice and as such is never 'complete', or more so, its complete form is a focus on eternal motion.

43 / 40
111110 XOR 101010 = 010100 - the complete form of 43 is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 40, as is the complete form of 40 described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 43. Thus the sense of intense promotion, of 'spreading the word', is associated with hexagram 40s focus on tension release through the relaxation of structure.

010100 XOR 101010 = 111110 - Conversely, the complete form of 40 is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 43.

14 / 06
111101 XOR 101010 = 010111 - The focus on being the centre of control and directing operations (14) is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 06 with its focus on mediation but in a competitive context. In a 'business' sense this is dealing with the competition firmly but not going too far, nor giving way too much.
010111 XOR 101010 = 111101 - Conversly, the complete form of 06 is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 14.

34 / 47
111100 XOR 101010 = 010110 - The focus here is on the invigorating nature of 34 being described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 47.
010110 XOR 101010 = 111100 - Conversly, the complete form of 47 is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 34.

09 / 04
111011 XOR 101010 = 010001 - The focus here is on the small gains of 09 being described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 04.
010001 XOR 101010 = 111011 - Conversly, the complete form of 04 is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 09 - with the focus on socialisation through education in the form of making small gains to eventually become 'noticed' etc.

05 / 07
111010 XOR 101010 = 010000 - The focus here is on networking and so the associating with 'likeminded' whilst awaiting the moment for action - described by analogy to 07 with its focus on uniformity, the 'army' etc.

010000 XOR 101010 = 111010 - Conversly, the complete form of 07 is described by analogy to the under-played characteristics of 05 with a focus on associating with the 'likeminded' whilst awaiting one's "moment". The networking of 05 allows for the establishment of a sense of 'agreement', of 'uniformity', usable when one's moment comes.

26 / 59
111001 XOR 101010 = 010011 - Hex 26 covers the sense of 'holding firm' to traditional perspectives as a source of mediation principles - as such there is a focus on 'making things clear', properties of 59, as in preferences etc.. dispel illusions, lifting the 'fog' (this also gets into behaviours associated with fundamentalism etc)

010011 XOR 101010 = 111001 - Conversly the focus on dispelling illusions, its complete form, is described by analogy to 26 and a focus on promotion of traditions etc to keep perspectives 'clear' (if but biased).

11 / 29
111000 XOR 101010 = 010010 - The 'complete' form of hexagram 11, with its focus on harmonising/balancing, is described by analogy to the properties of hexagram 29 with its focus on containment/control.

010010 XOR 101010 = 111000 - Conversly, the complete form of hexagram 29, with its focus on containment/control is described by analogy to the properties of hexagram 11 with its focus on harmonsing/balancing (and so general mediation to allow for containment/control)

BTW - Just to make the point about XOR-ing, we are identfying 'something' by analogy to related 'things', to its aspects. As such we are summing 'vague' feelings to make our 'crisp' feeling - we are using universal, vague, qualities to aid in identifying core properties of a particular universal that is then 'grounded' in some local context (e.g. the traditional IC texts where the prose is in the form of trying to describe qualities of the hexagram by analogy to local, historical, mythological, events etc)

With XOR-ing we are in fact using the IC to describe itself - we are bring out the 'regular' or 'context-free' network properties of the IC as a totally integrated, but vague, whole.

Hi Chris,

Could you say what's the difference between x-oring and x-anding?

What's the purpose of each?

There is no x-anding. We have logic operators such as:

XOR = exclusive OR
IOR = inclusive OR
AND
IMP (implies)
COIN (coincidence)
NOT

Composites are then made from these such as NAND etc.

In the brain it appears that the XOR operator allows one to extract PARTS from a WHOLE where those PARTS are WHOLES in their own right - CONTEXT determines. (also 'google' the notion of a 'holon')

The use of recursion to bring out trigrams/hexagrams/dodecagrams is a manifestation of XOR/AND dynamics (to implement XOR in the brain requires no less than TWO neurons, one feeding back on the other. This feedback ensures that recursion is a property of the brain (self-referencing)).

To see this XOR/AND dynamic at work from a sensory level, see how it can produce paradox and a method with which to deal with paradox (we argue! ;-)) go through:

http://members.iimetro.com.au/~lofting/myweb/paradox.html

The ICPlus work discovered this XOR/AND dynamic in the IC where XOR-ing hexagram X with Y will give you the qualities of X expressed THROUGH Y where the description is by analogy to some other hexagram. What this shows is how each hexagram is a particular expression of the WHOLE and in that expression contains contributions from ALL of the other hexagrams.

This is a basic property of finite languages where a limited set of meanings is used to describe 'all there is'. The FINITE nature of the set of meanings means that there is repetition and so each meaning can be used many times in different contexts. Thus the meanings are being used not as 1:1 mappings but as sources of analogy/metaphor. This is how the IC 'works' in that it is represents a set of universals that are then linked to a local context and through that linkage we derive meaning, label it, and use the label to communicate.

See the more recent ICPLus webpages:

material on XOR-ing as well as wave nature of lines etc.

Ok, so x-oring shows how each hex influences and changes another hex - is that right?

What's anding - I've seen you use that.

no. Consider each hexagram as having a spectrum or a genetic code sequence that determines the expression of that hexagram.

All 64 hexagrams form into a sequence unique to each hexagram that is that spectrum or genetic code sequence.
XOR-ing allows us to extract the expression of each hexagram in that sequence.

In th 63-ness we focus on (a) the universal that is hexagram 63 qualities and (b) that nature expressed THROUGH each of the other hexagrams.

Consider yourself. How you express an emotion, e.g. surprise, is determined by your nature as well as your nurture where the latter customises the former.

What we are dealing with here is the nature element, the genetic element. ALL of us, as neuron-dependent life forms contain within us the qualities expressed in the I Ching and so allow context to 'push our buttons' and express those qualities. Our uniqueness will 'localise' that expression and that is what the XOR-ing can identify, the universals that have been localised 'in' us.

Thus the expression of 'completion' in each of us is extracted by XOR-ing 63 with the hexagram representing 'us'. The expression of our 'skeletal' form is extracted by XOR-ing 27 with the hexagram representing 'us' and so on.

We are dealing with STRUCTURE - which is what the links point to; material on the "Book of Structures"

Through the use of XOR we get a hexagram to use the I Ching to describe itself - it is self-referencing but general, universal, archetypal. LOCAL context then grounds that universal, gives it 'life'; local 'colour'.

"XOR-ing hexagram X with Y will give you the qualities of X expressed THROUGH Y where the description is by analogy to some other hexagram."

Are you not modifying the qualities of X? If you express X through 25 or through 26, don't you end up with a different picture of X in each expression?

And what do you mean by "some other hexagram"? Do you mean 25 or 26 in my example?
