I did a reading asking what effect a trip to visit a friend would have on my life and got 8 to 32 with the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th lines moving. Overall it seems promising but I'm worried about line 3. Any advice?
Thank you.

Don't worry. The overall tenor of the hexagrams is quite good.

i see 32. Duration as referring to the long and winding road of life and 8 as a reference to this anticipated visit with your friend. So The I Ching is very clearly mirroring your question and telling you how this adventure will fit in with your over all life path. I think it is basically saying that what ever happens life goes on, we endure, so this suggests the weekend is not going to blow you off course.

The lines of Hexagram 8 explain to you how you can attract friends but avoid obligations:
8.2 You are a sincere and open hearted person.
8.3 Because of your openness you attract many friends, some good, some cling-ons. You aren't obligated to entertain cling-ons.
8.4 To avoid cling-ons clinging, it is suggested you keep your associations very public. Refuse to do anything you wouldn't want shown on you tube.
8.5 Likewise you should not seek to manipulate or cling-on to others.

32.By following these suggestions you will preserve your sense of who you are and most likely also increase the chances of the friendship Enduring.

Thank you both icastes and rosada for your help. It seems that I have enough going for me that i would be able to deal with any negative people.

But I am also worried about whether it is a good use of money since it will be very expensive for me to get there. It is across an ocean (and I haven't yet booked the trip).I asked if it was better for me to go in the next few weeks or to stay and save my money. (My friend isn't expecting me yet and they would understand that I might need to use my funds on more practical and permanent things at this time.) I got 23.2.4 to 64. This seems like I should wait or not go at all since Hex 23 says "it does not further one to go anywhere". Line 2 speaks of having no help or friendly gestures which makes me think that it's not a good time to visit. Line 4 just sounds completely bad. Hex 64 makes me think that maybe another time would be better.

So because these 2 readings seem kind of contradictory, I asked the I Ching to show me the proper and auspicious thing to do concerning the idea of this trip. The answer was 30.1.2 to 50. the confusion in line 1 is obvious and line 2 sounds good but I'm not too sure about how to use that other than having a positive attitude? Then i am really confused by the resulting hexagram. Does Hex 50 mean I should keep thinking about it? That I will eventually make this trip??

Ah! Now that you explain the situation a bit more i re-interpret the message of hex.8 a bit differently. I see the lines as emphasizing you need not feel that you have to go. That is..

8.2 You did not seek this invitation, it came to you.
8.3 You wonder if this is the right use of your funds at this time.
8.4 Perhaps this line indicates the person who organized the trip? Could this mean telling this person how you're pleased to be asked but that frankly you are not sure this is in your budget.
8.5 Reads like you would be reassured that you need not feel pressured to come.

32. Duration then reads to me as if to say you should stick to your original plans, that the friendships will continue even if you do not go on this adventure.

Perhaps a follow up question such as, "What is the best use of my money at this time?"

Oh, sorry rosada for being vague, but I think you may have been closer to the mark in your first response. The idea for the trip was mine but it was kind of impulsive. I was not invited by anyone. I just felt like reconnecting with my friend and taking a trip. Kinda felt like she needed some company but she never asked for it. It's just a hunch on my part.
Thanks for getting back to me on this. Do you have any insight on the other two readings I did?
Thank you again.

The trip may be too much for you at this time.

Why don't you email your friend or talk with her specifically about the fact you're seriously thinking of making a trip to see her (or him)? Sometimes it's better to talk more with the person instead of asking questions of the I Ching. In communicating directly with your friend, I hope everything becomes a lot clearer.

Well I'm not just worried about inconveniencing my friend, esp. since I learned she wants me to come for a visit. I'm also worried about the time and money constraints on myself and future plans. I had decided, though, that I shouldn't go for now. This reading had a lot to do with it. I guess the Yi got sick of me asking and gave me this straight answer. I asked the I Ching to speak to me about going on this trip within the next few weeks and received 56.1.3 to 21. A terrible response to get, but I am surprised by it because the behaviour described in these moving lines are the complete opposite of my intentions or attitude towards my friend and this visit.
So to help get my mind away from the trip idea I asked "Please speak to me about where I should focus my energy during the next few weeks. The answer was 26.1.2.3.6 to 2. This hex seems to say that maybe I should go ("not eating at home brings great fortune" and "it furthers one to cross the great water") and that lines 3 and 6 show that the time of waiting is over (since the idea of visiting has occurred to me several times before but I was waiting for a better time. The resulting 2, though, makes me feel like I should wait and not make take any actions. As follow up, I asked "How do I do this?" and the answer was 15.2.4.5 to 28. Hex 28 says "it furthers one to have somewhere to go".
I am just so confused by the contradictory readings. This may seem like a lot of attention to a trivial thing but if I don`t go now it may be a long time before I get to see her or do some traveling at all.
Thanks so much anyone for any further help with this.

56.1.3 to 21.
This is really a straight forward response and there can be no doubt you'd be making a big mistake to travel to see her at this time.

"Please speak to me about where I should focus my energy during the next few weeks. The answer was 26.1.2.3.6 to 2.
I can almost feel the pressure that is pushing you to do something right now, anything, to get moving in a direction ...

Hexagram 26 is said to be the Great Nourisher in that the longer we can hold ourselves back -- or the longer we are held back by external forces -- the more we grow in strength and understanding. Doesn't feel very good at the time, however. Feels more like being inside a pressure cooker ...

You have not reached the end of hex 26 yet. Where are you in hex 26? Maybe line one or line two.

You have not reached line 3 or line 6, and I say this because of your other readings. When there are a number of moving lines in a hexagram, usually we start at the bottom in interpreting the reading. That is, things will move in a step-by-step way -- and right now is not the time to take a trip.

If you are at line one, then some difficulty is approaching you but you aren't supposed to do anything to ward off or avoid this difficulty. In other words, you may need to stay where you are (and not be away some place else) for a very good reason. There's some hindrance you don't know about, Tess. Soon everything should become more clear ...
