Wondering which attitude would help me move forward in general in my life at the moment, I threw the coins and got 9.1.4>44.

Take small steps (9), start again, focus on my world (9.1), have faith (?) or be confident (9.4). Don't know what 44 stands for here...

Lise's 9.4:
6 at 4: Inspiring confidence. Blood goes away, fear goes out. Without fault.
Small human matters, fears, ties, frustrations, they are forgotten when inspiration brings big images, ideals. Now one is no longer following human patterns, but dedicating oneself to higher aims. When the soul 'knows', there is no fear. He will follow his knowing.

This explanation of line 4 inspired another question "How can I overcome my fears and hurts?" 36.4>55

Lise's 36.4:
6 at 4: Entering the left belly. Catching the heart of Hiding Brightness. Coming out of front door and courtyard.
When one dares to enter in the depths where fear, danger, unhappiness and obstruction reign, one might defeat them and show up again. As long as they are avoided, unconscious or set aside, they have more power than you.

Is this suggesting I see a therapist or something? I have done all that already. I somewhat know already were the fears, hurts and frustrations come from but they haven't gone away due to my "knowing". What is this line really saying?

I'll give it a go, it helps to have other people's I Ching queries to puzzle over so I don't over-ask. Anyhoo...

9.1.4>44
9 is about small everyday activities, not big concerns, so the Yi is advising you to just live your daily life, with a warning not to spend too much energy on trivial or very new concerns just because you might be desiring more movement (excitement) in your life. 4 adds that all confidence starts within and from small beginnings and not to worry if life isn't showing much outwardly right now. Don't worry that you're doing too little to change things, IOW. It's all good.
44 adds that movements and sudden appearances in your life will perhaps stir up a lot of feeling, and to not marry yourself to situations but let them (and the feelings) flow.

36.4>55
36 for me is always about quiet and unsure times in life, and though we want to just get over them, they are exactly the right time for doing less outwardly, but going within to explore. But, know that going into these deep matters sometimes demands a different kind of mind than reason, a courage to let the controlling membrane of reason slip away and willingly enter the instinctual sense of things within. This will reap rewards (abundance) and that may not look like traditional aha insight right away.

The question you ask is very general, and in my experience that always denotes that it's most important that you wrestle with your reading and think about these hexes and lines yourself. That's the point of the I Ching, ultimately, and particularly with respect to larger life Qs. Hope this helps.

Thanks, your wording helped me understand these hexs a bit better.

44 could be somethihg thats thrown you off balance a bit, that may be somewhat destabilising...or at least some factor you had to accomodate...perhaps some new growth in some area. I think 9.1 is reassuring you won't go far off course, stay confident (9.4) don't be pushed (hex 44) or hurried, take your time and attend to the next thing to be done however small.

It might be saying to actually remove yourself from a source of hurt.

Generally i find 36.4 comes up around my visiting some place or situation which is not good for me, where there may actually be unfriendly forces about that can harm . They don't because you go undercover, you get out undetected. Its a line of espionage.

I'm wondering if this is practical advise if you are still going somewhere where you are exposed to hurtful things then get away from them...not in your mind but actually in person. Sometimes distancing oneself merely in the mind is not enough, you may need actual physical distance. It could also refer to the fact that you have already escaped, you have gotten away from harmful people or situations. Theres no threat in this line, the escape is successful, but don't underestimate the impact of harmful things...take care of yourself.

Often we are told we can handle bad stuff if we change attitude etc etc...this really is not enough sometimes. I think 36.4 is a recognition of this. One might get very close to the harmful thing but one gets well away. If you have 36 then something has threatened your inner light and you need to protect it. You do this by concealing yourself, your emotions and also physically by 'leaving the courtyard'. A number of times this has been so literal for me...slipping out of the back door, no one noticed you were ever there and you keep whats yours and what precious to you

Trojan, I truly believe, as you, that only changing our attitude doesn't always work, then removing oneself is the only and best answer.

"The problem is all inside MY head" as Paul Simon sings (thanks for the link). Thinking and feeling frustrated about hurts....

Many thanks for your views on these lines Trojan, they were very helpful.
