I wanted to share a realization: very often, when I ask a loaded question, in a state of semi panic, and I get an ominous response like 28UC (get out now!), 29UC (danger!), 33.1 (stop dead in your tracks, danger not far behind), 51UC (shock, terror then laughter) etc... This is not a response to my loaded questiion.

What IC is actually telling me is: "stop that train of thought right now!". The IC equivalent of "calm down, dear. We can talk again once you have regained perspective".

Has anyone else experienced this?

I think when the IC warns me of imminent danger, it's often the danger of working myself into a downward spiral, rather than external danger.

For example, "Outlook for an upcoming business meeting" 29UC. I start worrying about whether I should cancel. Then I wonder if I should cancel permanently or just reschedule. And I wonder how the business at hand could be dangerous for me, if I should try to do it with different people or not do it at all etc... and I work myself up in a tizzy... Pretty soon, it looks like dangerous precipices all over the place. At the very least, this panicky running around in circles without additional real life information is irrational and unproductive...

Granted, there could be an external threat. But most often, if I read it as "stop that train of thought right now!", and take the time to examine what is making me uncomfortable enough to ask the question, I start to see a lot of things about the situation, the people, my own drivers etc... It's not good or bad, it's just awareness.

My impression is that the IC sometimes gives me a jolt like that to redirect my thoughts. Often, 51UC says "you are in shock, wait until it clears to take action", 28UC "if you keep this up, you will overwhelm yourself" 29UC "that train of thought is bringing up all sorts of dangers, don't go there, ease yourself out of that narrative" etc... If I remember other examples, I will post them. But we all have our own IC shorthand, so I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this?

Hmm. Lately I've been trying to make sense of a couple of 50.4s that have turned up in recent readings on different questions. I've been thinking of them as external -- something someone might do to me, somehow -- but now I'm considering other possibilities. Thanks for that perspective.

I get readings like this all the time--I mean ones that seem to apply to my current mental state. It took me forever to understand this. Each hexagram brings its own flavor, though, of course. Speaking very generally:

28: seriously, do not add one more straw to your current emotional/mental load
29: keep moving, move on, do not get stuck in this emotional/mental place
36: yeah wow you are really not getting it. Deep confusion. Mad king in charge inside your head.
39: the thing you're looking for is not at the end of this emotional/mental road. You THINK this is the right road, but it really isn't.
44: if you dip your toe one more inch into this water, the undertow will sweep you out to sea.

Also, fwiw, 50.4 I think is always for me--and is explicitly, in the line--about some internal problem, a mistake you're making or about to make. For me it's often a question of beginning something without proper preparation, or in too rushed/heedless a way. I often ask the yi for clarification about the nature of the mistake.
