Over and over again lately, I've been getting the message from the Yi to back off, don't strive, don't try to be ambitious (very hard advice for me, as it often translates in my brain into "give up.")

Recently a group, really a movement I've been part of has been absolutely brought to a standstill, a very depressing standstill, from which people can see no way forward. I personally have been very burnt out, but just sitting around in front of the TV hasn't been helpful. Attempting to re-engage hasn't been helpful either. More and more I've been thinking about a retreat where people could go and re-charge their batteries, cry about what's been bothering them, talk about what's going on with them, and turn inward but stay connected--or maybe even make the connections better. I'm feeling a need for turning inward, but I've been thinking that maybe more people in the group need it too--we are a very workaholic movement, very "never-say-die" very "stiff-upper-lip" and we tend to bash our heads against the same walls repeatedly. I fit into this movement very well as I am also a head-into-wall type. :brickwall:

I've been wondering if I should try and organize a retreat series. This could be something I could fruitfully engage with rather than simply sitting in front of the TV.

So I asked the I Ching about it:

is my idea of creating a retreat center or retreat series for activists a promising one, what the movement needs, or what is good for me to do in my life?

Oops, that was three questions. Well, anyway, here is what the I Ching said:

12.1.3>13

The present is embodied in Hexagram 12 - P'I (Stagnation): There is a lack of understanding between the different classes of men, and its indication is unfavorable to the firm and correct course of the superior man. We see in it greatness gone and the lesser come upon us.

Quoth Me: Well, that is certainly the truth!

The first (bottommost) line, divided, suggests the idea of grass pulled up, and bringing with it other stalks with whose roots it is connected. With firm correctness on the part of its subject, there will be good fortune and progress.

Quoth Me: This strikes me as funny because it makes a pun on "grass roots!"
I found that Hilary wrote this about it:

But 12.1 is 12 zhi 25, obstruction's disentangling. So we need to find a connection as well as a contrast. Tradition, I think, says someone is pulling others with him into retirement, away from involvement in the 12-ish world.

If that's true, it sounds like a positive indication for a retreat or series of retreats.

The third line, divided, shows its subject ashamed of the purpose folded in his breast.
The situation is shifting, and Yang (the active masculine force) is gaining ground.

Quoth Me: I found where Chris said there was some sense of having been manipulated or made into a chump. That would certainly fit. Being inextricably involved in a shameful situation might also fit, though in general I don't see where the people I'm thinking of have actually done anything shameful other than trust the wrong (more powerful) people.

Help on this line would be very appreciated!

The relating hexagram is 13, Fellowship With Men, which I believe is about joining together with like-minded individuals in remote regions! So is this a pretty literal and direct "yes, that would be good" or am I reading it too simply?

The future is embodied in Hexagram 13 - T'ung Jen (Fellowship with Men): The union of me appears here in the remote districts of the country, indicating progress and success. It will be advantageous to cross the great stream. It will be advantageous to maintain the firm correctness of the superior man.

Seems like a very reassuring reading for what you want to undertake, is all I can say. But do try and make simpler questions in the future, otherwise you will confuse yourself too in terms of what part of the question Yi is replying to :) In this case I would ask another question just in case, because in the question you referred to both the group and you, but you don't in fact know whether this line of action is good for YOU or the GROUP. Just a thought!
