I’ve been listening to The Autobiography of Ben Franklin (free on LoyalBooks.com) and his description of his notebook where he keeps track of all his character traits and flaws and methods of correcting and improving them strikes me as a perfect example of “a noble one working out and reckoning and reflecting on character in action.”
Acknowledging of faults and their unconditional acceptance (pine?) paves the way for rebirth, dissolution of self and the articulating of new times (willow?) as we make the crossing.

I seem to recall he invented bifocals, so obviously had an inclination towards being able to see things clearly.

I love the idea of rainbows for an image of 60 - each color in it’s carefully designated place - without such “limitations” the colors would all be so Dispersed we wouldn’t have a rainbow at all.

Further thoughts on 60..
I think of how words can make ideas accessible, but the words must be more than just sounds because like a movie star who calls everyone “Dahling”, if the word Dahling is not Limited to those who are special then the word has no meaning. So I think of 60 as indicating the outer shell, the container, the body, but then you need 61, the inner feeling, the soul, to give the outer form meaning.

61. Inner Feeling

Inner truth. Piglets and fishes, good fortune.
Fruitful to cross the great river.
Constancy bears fruit.

Above the lake is the wind, Inner Truth.
A noble one deliberates over legal proceedings and delays executions. (Hilary)

61. Deals with deepening self-awareness and tapping into one’s inner truth. It emphasizes the importance of understanding oneself and being guided by one’s inner voice - conscience - and intuition, directing one to trust their own judgement.

Curious how here in the final hexagrams (55, 56 and 61) we have so many references to legal proceedings and crossing the great water. Final judgement?

Bach Flower essence: Cerato.
The Bach flower essence Cerato is known to support individuals who struggle with self-trust and often seek external validation or advice before making decisions. It encourages the development of inner confidence and intuition, allowing people to trust their own judgment.

By taking Cerato individuals might find it easier to connect with their inner truths and feel more empowered in their decision-making processes. This essence can help dissolve doubt and enhance one's ability to embrace their own insights, which aligns with the principles of hexagram 61.

Song:: ”Ya Gotta Have Heart!” From Damn Yankees!

Bible verse: Proverbs 5-6
Trust in the lord with all your heart.

I really like this perspective.
Further thoughts on 60..

61, I would suggest, is also providing an authentic conduit for connection of inner and outer worlds.

One way in which to view 61 is through understanding what it is not as depicted by its shadow site of hexagram 4. Here where the young fool stands isolated and alone having just stepped off the boat, blinded in the maelstrom of chaos, confusion and frustration of a new land. He is inexperienced in the ways of the world and wildly immature. The fog of his immaturity robs him of any self reliance. He cannot yet see the fruit yet alone know how to ripen it.

If hexagram4 is 'Not Knowing' then 61 could be likened to 'Knowing'. Here a place of trust in ones heart and a strong conscious awareness has been reached that will make the navigation of both stormy and calm seas a more favourable one. The pirates that were once in residence have been transformed and have become valuable members of the crew now. The 61 hexagram figure represents a boat with an empty centre that opens the way for further and deeper spiritual alchemy.

The structure of the hexagram lines create a wonderful interweaving pattern for 'Innermost Sincerity'. 3 pairs of archetypal guardians creating safe space at different levels for our deepest truth.

61.1 and 61.6: Alternate to the 59 / 60 pair (Dispersing and Regulating) that hold the boundaries of outermost connections between Earth and Heaven. Creating an arena for establishing new temples before recognising that you can only go so far before a new hand is dealt.

61.2 and 61.5 contain the middle circle that flows between 42 Increasing and 41 Decreasing. First emulating good and correcting faults while on the other side of the coin focusing on controlling anger and restraining desire.

While the innermost sanctum of 61.3 and 61.4, alternates to the pair of 9 'Little Accumulation' and 10 'Fulfilment' where the deepest truth is held within an environment that polishes and beautifies ones cultured qualities while at the same time discriminates with regard to ones duties towards what is high and what is low and in so doing quiets the mind.
Bach Flower essence: Cerato.
The Bach flower essence Cerato is known to support individuals who struggle with self-trust and often seek external validation or advice before making decisions. It encourages the development of inner confidence and intuition, allowing people to trust their own judgment.
Cleary names 61 'Faithfulness in the Centre' so linking an essence that supports or restores faith makes good sense. As the Bach Centre concludes

Cerato helps us have more faith in our judgement so that we can listen to our inner voice and trust our intuition.
Make mine a double !!

Nigel Richmond paints a distinct and deeply fascinating picture for 61.

From the lines:

Here we have our activity out in the world (lines 3 & 4) and the inner reality appears as potential outer reality. This is the simple state of outward-facing growing identity, it is so confident of the inner base of its reality that it becomes unaware of it. This simple state of identity has not the sophistication to doubt itself so that it has great certainty wnd with this is accomplishes growth. With this confidence comes the common name of the hexagram which is 'inner truth'.

From the image:
The tao illustrates the breathing out of the life force into the world and its return to the inner without doubt or hesitation.

The pattern:
Flowing in and out of activity is harmonious. Contact and awareness between inner and outer has strength.

For humans:
He finds it easy to know his inner truths, to flow between his inner-outer life and feel more whole.

In nature:
The bud unfolds, opens into opposites enclosing both in seed.

In forms we make:
A new dimension becomes real when inner and outer connect to become one feeling.

Random thought. I really like these insights about inner - outer flow. Makes me think about how vibration travels through air and when we breath in we are taking in air that has been inside another person so when we breath in we are taking in the vibration of everyone else who has breathed that same air. If our inner receptors are clear then we should be able to feel the new vibrations coming in. Thus theoretically there can be no secrets When we breath out we are breathing out air that is now vibrating to our own “inner truth”. Hmm..certainly makes one aware of the importance of consciously choosing who you surround yourself with.

I agree, that the descriptions of 61 do point to an open and highly developed sense of collectiveness. However, the nature of the flow and the class of vibrations will determine how long we are able to remain open to this state of Innermost Sincerity

Legge sees 61 as being the pinnacle of characteristic attainment for humankind
It denotes the highest quality of man, and gives its possessor power so that he prevails with spiritual beings, with other men, and with the lower creatures.
Prevailing I don't think means being superior to, but perhaps means more a case of the possessor having gained a degree of mastery of the highest power.

I, at times, see it more as the quality that Maslow called self-actualization. It is the ability to become the best version of ourself that we can in any moment, and for each of us that will mean something different. Most of us have a limited capacity to self actualise. It requires a combination of being highly creative, autonomous, objective, concerned about humanity, and accepting of ourselves and others. A set of plates which are extremely difficult to keep spinning all at the same time and while the longer and louder the cock crows (61.6) the greater is the tendency to fall of the lofty perch and knock the plates flying.

Perhaps we have to remember to take an in breath somewhere along the way, too.

Perfect image for 61.6!
Especially because this line leads to 62. Attention to Detail which if I see as indicating funerals (okay, the rooster didn’t actually drop dead but only passed out but close enough…) and other situations that refer to finishing up the last details before 63. Completion.

So anyway, here we are almost at the completion of our Bach Essence study with just a few more details to consider:

62. Attention to Detail.

Small exceeding creating success.
Constancy bears fruit.
Allows small works, does not allow great works.
A bird in flight leaves its call.
Going higher is not fitting, coming down is fitting.
Great good fortune.

Above the mountain is thunder: Small Exceeding.
A noble one in action exceeds in respect.
In loss exceeds in morning.
In spending exceeds in economy. (Hilary)

It is important that rosada has acknowledged the closeness of hexagram 64 that rests just over the horizon and what will be a new beginning as well as an end. Also, here on the 29th March with the new moon in Aries and a partial solar eclipse occurring it can help to be proactive in your own pursuits as the energy of this time represents a culmination point where we are able to feel and honor the rewards of all our efforts since 2023. We obviously will each have a different culmination and I hope that you each rejoice in the greater alignment you will experience along with healthier relationships. Take time to breathe all this in and to honour yourself.

While there are similarities, I'll offer a slightly different story for 62 than rosada has.

We have been taught how to successfully articulate the crossing (60) to become the best version of ourselves that we can manage to be (61). We have also been warned of the difficulties and consequences that lie in wait for us (61.6): that will throw us off from consistently walking the middle way. 62 provides the remedy, which is that you are already on the path and that each action you take only needs to one be of exceptionally small magnitude. Only minor tweaking is necessary now. Wild swings or soaring high into flights of fancy will not serve your purpose. Adapt to every small thing that you face each day in nothing other than small ways. Take responsibility for your own actions, especially without following mindlessly the call, imaginings or dramas of others.

The shadow of 62 is 3 where the confusion of seemingly chaotic events once ruled the roost: these imaginings no longer apply. Here, in 62, while it may still be challenging, at times, you are now better equipped with a top of the range toolset, which is based in moderation, authenticity and humility. All these only have to be used in very small doses to effectively bring success. Remember, you only ever need to gently open the doors to pass through them.

This is not 62...

No songs immediately spring to mind. So a bit of poetry instead, which better represents 62, in my world. Rather than 'man' in the final line it may help to insert 'noble one' instead

More thoughts on hexagram 62. Attention to Detail (also refered to here as Small Exceeding and Preponderance of the Small)

Now seeing Hexagram 62, as a call to action, a reminder that faith without works is dead, that 61. Inner Truth needs tangible expression. After the self-awareness found in hexagram 61, where we recognize our true inner nature - our inner light - as love, now hexagram 62 urges us to translate that insight into concrete deeds. This hexagram highlights the importance of small, deliberate actions as a means to manifest our love and intentions in the world. It teaches that even the smallest gestures can carry significant weight and that it is through these minor yet meaningful acts that we truly demonstrate our commitment to others. In this way, hexagram 62 inspires us to approach life with an open heart, knowing that just as the flap of a butterfly wing can change the course of history, our insights, our inner truth, can be brought to life through even the smallest of our everyday interactions.

And now why I see 62 as referring to death and funerals and the importance of attending to the last Details…

“Small exceeding creating success. Constancy bears fruit.”
Although the main experience has been completed and (61.) the soul/Inner Truth has been released from its (60.) Limitations and the party is over, still there are dishes to wash and other details to take care. Or in the case of a death, what a blessing it is if the deceased themself had taken care of all the details and left their affairs in good order!

”Allows small works, does not allow great works.”
Funerals are a time for reflection and closer, not the time for starting new projects.

”A bird in flight leaves its call.”
Most significant line of the whole Judgement. During times of transition small things can seem particularly meaningful. There is often a feeling at a funeral gathering of the one who has passed on being present. Like if the decease’s favorite song comes up on the radio comes on the radio just as we’re driving away from the cemetery, if we’re attentive we can recognize this small synchronicity as a message from the departed - the bird in flight leaving its call.

”Going higher is not fitting. Coming down is fitting.
”Great good fortune.”
More is not necessarily better. How many times the I Ching reminds us not to over shoot the mark?

“Above the Mountain is Thunder: Small Exceeding.”

”A noble one in action exceeds in respect.”
The expression “Going to pay one’s respects” is used for describing the importance of attending a funeral and a noble one will certainly do this.

”In loss exceeds in morning”
It is appropriate to acknowledge the loss and to express grief at such a time.

”In expense exceeds in economy.”
Costly floral arrangements and firework shows are unnecessary. A heart felt gesture of condolence is sufficient.

Bach flower essence: Mimulus.
The essence of Mimulus promotes courage and the ability to face everyday challenges with a clear and calm mind. This aligns with the message of hexagram 62, which suggests that small, deliberate actions can lead to significant outcomes. By alleviating fears and empowering individuals to step outside their comfort zones, Mimulus enables them to engage meaningfully with the world, turning insight into action.

Proverbs 16:18:
"Pride goes before a fall."
This verse highlights the significance of humility and the caution required to avoid downfall, as does 62 with the themes of staying small and not flying too high.

Song: These Foolish Things Remind Me of You. - Louie Armstrong.

I'm not sure that I'm with you yet on the funeral perspective (not that that matters one iota) and would like to hear more. I can align with something more like egoic deaths now needing to be smaller. The new in us emerges slowly small step by small step rather than perhaps has been the case in the past wanton spilling of the egoic guts through some wild perception of emergency.

This theme took me towards the concept of the Native American Red Road which can in some ways be likened to the middle path. The Native American culture proclaims that in life each person has to choose between two paths a dark path of self destruction or a path of healing, which I'd also call self-actualisation, which was coloured by all the blood of, and shed by, their ancestors.

This latter they call The Red Road. It signifies a deep and truthful commitment to living life to the fullest and being the best that you can be. This road is paved with trust, respect for self and others, and is deeply fuelled by inspiration and transformation while equally holding fast a dedication to devotion towards their Creator. (Clear echoes of Yin and Yang)

Nothing more to say on that just leaving it for consideration and adding diversity and richness to the thread

The trigrams of 62 Thunder over Mountain. Mountain points towards an inner awareness and experience of self. Here knowing the truth of who you are and what you are you are better able to apply greater calmness to your world: internally and externally. With this deep awareness the Thunder with all its shake and shock activity that normally drives our actions is effectively reduced. The falseness in the patterns that once existed has been shown for what it is. We are now more able to act consciously in small ways towards whatever it is that crosses our path.

Of course whether we choose to or not is another matter entirely.

Hi My_key,
Okay, I’ve edited my last post to explain my ideas about 62 representing funerals a bit more.
I like your thoughts on the Image and seeing Mountain as a protective barrier from the shocks of the outer world’s Thunder. Like a burial mound protects the body so it may “Rest in Peace”.

p.s. The clip of Sir Michael Caine reading “If” - Wowza! Makes one appreciate why he was considered one of the greats. And ”If” was followed on my computer by a recitation of “Rage” which is also mind blowing and appropriate for 62.

The lore of mimulus holds it as a symbol of endurance particularly with respect to known fears i.e. what shakes us up on a day to day basis such as spiders, speaking in public, the dark, clowns etc. When fears are known it it is always much easier to develop the virtue of valour compared to when they are unknown. When there is a name for our foes, that name makes our fear visible and contained and so we are more able to address them, one step at a time. Mimulus was used particularly for people with a shy or timid nature, as it readily boosts the inner resources they have available.

Mimulus is commonly known as the monkey flower and one of the ancient superstitious beliefs about spotted plants such as mimulus and lilies was that the spots represented illness and giving them to another was seen as offering ill-will to them.

In hexagram 62. there is an emphasis on small forces making significant impacts and thus ultimately leading to the completion of the journey (or this thread!) so now we arrive at hexagram 63. sometimes known as After Completion or Already Across. The judgement warns that even after reaching a goal one must stay alert and proactive to ensure that success endures. I use the example of moving into a new apartment. At 62 one is taking care of all the Details of moving out of the old place - returning the keys, getting back the damage deposit - then at 63. one has Completed the initial move - a small success - but there is a warning: one mustn’t rest yet. Indeed, one must be constant now - you’re moved out but you’re not yet moved in and must continue the process by setting up the new apartment. Thus “Beginnings, good fortune” - your suitcases and boxes all arrived! - but ”endings, chaos!” Now where to put everything? Plus “A noble one reflects on distress and prepares to defend against it” - So essential to now check out the new place, make sure the light switches all work and do the doors lock?

63. Already Across
Already across, creating small success.
Constancy bears fruit.
Beginnings, good fortune - endings, chaos.

Stream dwells above fire: Already Across.
(The image implies a need for caution. The fire may be in danger of being extinguished by the water if not carefully managed. It serves as a reminder to be mindful of how external factors can influence one’s inner state and to ensure that creative energies are nurtured rather than suppressed. Hexagram 63 is about the state following completion, highlighting that while one might feel a sense of success (the fire’s initial warmth), it is essential to remain vigilant and avoid complacency. The water above acts as a reminder of the ongoing changes and challenges that may arise even after a goal has been achieved.)

A noble one reflects on distress and prepares to defend against it.
(Hilary)

Bach Flower essence: Gorse
All the work around bringing things to 63. Completion can leave a person feeling overwhelmed, even defeated. Gorse supports optimism and the emotional resilience necessary for maintaining a positive outlook despite challenges.

Biblical Verse:
James 1:12 - "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.".
Just as this hexagram warns against complacency after a period of completion or success, the verse reminds us that true blessings come to those who remain steadfast and cautious in their faith, especially after overcoming trials.

Song lyric:
“High Hopes” - Frank Sinatra
Just what makes that silly old ant,
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant?
Everyone knows an ant can’t
Move a rubber tree plant.
But he’s got high hopes!
He’s got high hopes!
He’s got high up hopes
High in the sky hopes.
So anytime you’re feeling low,
‘Stead of letting go,
Just remember that ant.
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant!

”The Art of Love” - Neil Diamond (Thanx my_key!)

So we step into the final pairing 'Already Crossing' and 'Not Yet Crossing': the place of ultimate Universal Symbolism.

63 carries the sense of perfection: all the yin and yang lines, what is firm and what is yielding, are positioned in their appropriate places. We rightly carry a sense of pride, satisfaction or happiness because of our achievements in fully developing our abilities or character.

The thing here in 63 is that the Universal Law of waxing and waning has not been switched off: to be fair it's never switched off in any of the other hexagrams either. We can ponder all we like and take proactive measures to prevent our hard won and already well established alignment from slipping but in the end our efforts against a Universal Law, a bit like King Canute trying to hold back the tide, are to little avail and decay inevitably worms it's way in. It is this Law that will eventually upset the apple cart. Remember, perfect alignment is only ever on loan to us.

The tides of outer Water ebb and flow gradually resurrecting old fears or bringing new risks for us to engage with. This emotions tugs slowly but incessantly bring to the inner landscape new patterns for us to contend with.

However careful we are these will wet our tail at a deep level, and so initially we are free from blame (63.1). If we lose our protective centre and chase need to chase after that which is lost, then that only makes things worse. Doing nothing is the best option here (63.2). Using any sort of of coercive force at our inner threshold will drag matters out into a long battle (63.3). It's important to be aware of the dangers that now have potential to exist on the outer world. What was once silk has become rags and these have to be used carefully to remedy the situation as a bung to close the holes and prevent further leaks (63.4). We may no longer feel great, perfect or aligned and we are warned that only through regaining our inner sincerity will matters improve. Perhaps we have become complacent but talking the walk is not enough now- lavish gestures will not recover matters it'll require a return to simple basics (63.5). Adversity, hungry souls and angry ghosts may have overwhelmed our world, in some small or large way, and while we have to live with that the wisdom to recognise is that it is only us that can do anything about it (63.6).

... or perhaps it's nothing like that at all.

Hexagram 64. Not Yet Across warns; how after an experience of accomplishment (63) potential pitfalls can arise as success can lead to complacency and getting pulled back into the old ways (63.6 Staying too long admiring his achievement the little fox slips back into the water, soaking his head).

Hexagram 64. Not Yet Across

Not yet across, creating success.
(You are on the verge of completing a goal, but you have not quite reached it yet. 64. indicates that success is achievable, but patience and careful planning are necessary to navigate the next stage effectively. Failure to plan = Planning to fail!)

The small fox, almost across,
Soaks its tail.
(Stay alert! Setbacks just when you are expecting an easy win can derail the whole project.)

No direction bears fruit.
(64 says without a careful plan for the future we’re likely to just fall back into the old habits and new resolutions will be worthless.)

Fire above Stream: Not Yet Across.
(The transformative energy of Fire - representing passion, inspiration, clarity- meets the unpredictable flow of the Stream. It suggests that while there is potential for enlightenment or insight, the final outcome is not certain.)

A noble one carefully differentiates between beings, so each finds its place. (Hilary)
(A place for everything and everything in its place. This final line of the I Ching is quite profound and sums up how one successfully can navigate the whole life experience.)

Bach Flower essence:
Scleranthus, for when it’s difficult to make up our minds. Helps in deciding what‘s important and what to do next.
And of course Walnut for adapting to the biggest change ever!!!

Bible verse:
Genesis 19:26:
The story of Lot’s wife who when almost out of danger, looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.
Another with a happier reading:
Philippians 1:6
”Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Song:
”We’ve Only Just Begun“
I don’t know if they still do this but back in the day this song was played at every high school graduation. Completion/Beginning.

I'm sensing that there has been a bit of a giddy up in the thread and a racing towards the other shore and the haven of 'what next' that comes about in 64.

I don't know about anyone else, however for me it is not often I'm able to sit basking in perfect alignment. I'm recognising that moving too swiftly onto 64 would definitely disturb that process and the defence against that is for me to remember that there is at this time nowhere to go and nothing to do for a few days (63.2) and that it might be advantageous for me to make another sincere offering (63.5) and seeing how those things play out.

Trying to hurriedly bring things to completion only creates disorder there is no sense in rushing headlong to meet it, but rather find a way to adapt in the situation. Decay of the old, change and the call to take the next step will all come soon enough and there is no way to escape that.

The weather here in the UK is warm and sunny over the weekend, so I'm off to take full advantage of that and will give some thought to 64 next week and especially a fitting song. I see rosada has changed her original selection to ”We’ve Only Just Begun“ making this a great choice for 64. In the meantime here is a tune for maintaining the perfect alignment of 63.

This whole thread feels to me like I rushed it too fast! But we’ve been at this for nearly a year now (can you believe it?!) and astrologically a whole bunch of planets are changing signs this spring - leaving Pisces the sign of endings and Dispersement and entering Aries the sign of new beginnings - so I really wanted to get it across the finish line asap. THANK YOU SO MUCH for your participation and encouragement, I could not have done it with out you!
p.s. And thanks too to friends who posted a comments or just stopped by to read this. It meant a lot.:)
p.p.s. And super thanks and gratitude to Hilary for all her work creating her book and providing this site. :cheer:

Everything goes at the pace it goes at and although you started the thread in May 2024 I was a Johnny-come-lately, although I do recognise how much time and effort has been required by us both to keep the ball rolling. I find it amazing that there have been 14k views in that time so your creating the link of Bach Essence to Hexagram has certainly been worthwhile. Your insights of these connections are worthy of this becoming a pinned thread, so that it doesn't become lost to the front page over time.

On a personal note, I have learnt so much about Bach Essence treatment, gained deeper insight into the hexagrams along the way and similarly feel more informed from exploring the plant lore. On the whole I've found it the time on this thread to be a real bundle of fun where we have both held a supportive and open perspective to each others views. While like you I am grateful for the contributions of others to the thread, I still hold a hope that more people will contribute going forward. Reaching 64 is not an end it's a new beginning.

Now onto 64.

64 generates a plea to move on from your current situation. Good work has been done to date and a new alignment exists. However, here though a twist in the tail is calling you. As we all know time is fleeting yet also there is a need to understand that right now there is not really an advantageous direction to go. Time is best used by taking stock and for the noble one finding a place for everything and taking some risks to move that which is not correctly positioned into a more rightful place. Life is giving you a new tune and a new dance to become acquainted with.

64.1 – The starting point where the echoes of foolhardy or extreme thoughts and behaviour may lead to the introduction of a repeated or new form of madness and the suffering of humiliation.

64.2 – You might get seduced by these echoes and become disoriented or spaced out by them. Finding a more appropriate stance will offer you good fortune.

64.3 – While this may all feel a bit dreamy it is not an appropriate situation and it is advantageous for you to fully ground yourself and cry out from the edge of your inner world ‘Fantasy Free Me’.

64.4 – Your back in it for the long haul again, without knowing exactly what is ahead or around you. You have to be determined and full of strength and spirit. So if you can’t ever go forward you might be helped by taking a jump to the left or even a step to the right to help you fulfil a goal.

64.5 – I know from my own experience that there will be many times when the blackness would hit me or at other times when a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink. Faith in connection is vitally important at these times and will allow you to keep your light shining in a humble way. The light, as always, opens the way.

64.6 - The wisdom here is to listen closely and remember to honour yourself and keep control. Of course, it’s never a mistake at the end of a journey to celebrate your accomplishments but doing so mindlessly may not be the best option to take.
