My economic situation is very bad, I'm without a job, and even if I could get some work, it would not help, at least not soon.

I asked: There are a huge number of different ways to get the money?

42.4 to 25

I guess this is a very positive response. I do not think that the work is the ONLY way to get the money (law of attraction), and perhaps this response refers to. Be in balance, get inspiration and trust.

Have I understood correctly? :)

Yes I think you understood correctly.

It's a brilliant answer and confirms your train of thought is on the right lines. The translation from Hilary's book ;

'Moving to the centre,
Notify the prince, he follows.
Fruitful to use this to inspire trust in moving the city'

Moving the city means rather than make do with how things are one makes a change to do things differently.

As you say there is more than one way of improving things. If you have debt for example you could call a debt charity if you have them where you are....or an advice centre to help you manage it....or there just may be many other routes to managing to get back on your feet financially.

I think the answer calls for you to try new approaches and not get despondent if some of them don't work. The main thing is to remember you are moving to a new city, a new place....a new way of doing things.

It says to 'notify the prince' and he will follow. I tend to see this as making your intent quite clear in your mind and outer events will fall in with that and support your intent.

Thank you very much!
I have too often been negative with the money,
and I have learned that I should expand my views and
be positive. I'm like a schoolboy who has read the book how
it would be good to do, but sometimes I landed still mentally distressed.

And that last phrase you typed reminded matter.
How awesome that I Ching is. :)

I saw this thread a day or two ago and had no idea how to comment on it. I still don't, really, but maybe there are a few things...it just seems it could mean so many different things.

I do see Trojina's point, that there are ways of staying afloat in an emergency that have nothing to do with someone hiring you. Blessedly, that addresses the actual question you asked, how to get money without a long being-hired-then-waiting-to-be-paid leadtime.

But I also worry that 42 > 25 in a context like this might seem a little too good to be true, depending on how you look at it. It could be tempting to think, oh, well, this will somehow work out splendidly (42) without me having to do very much (25). That may not be what you're thinking, but it might bear saying anyway.

Here's Hilary's commentary on 42.4:

"Moving freely with the flow of increase, you go to the centre of things and become actively involved in its changes. It’s time for the city to be transplanted to a more auspicious site. Rather than making do with how things are, people must disengage completely from the old, ill-omened city and move into a more harmonious alignment with heaven. Clear communication is essential to secure agreement – both inner and outer – for such a radical shift. You will need to enlist the leader’s cooperation, and earn the trust and consent of all involved."

Notice how Hilary is saying "go to the centre of things and become actively involved in its changes" and "people must disengage completely from the old, ill-omened city..."

Jobs and money do fall into people's laps sometimes. I've had it happen for me, and I hope it does for you, too, but I think it's important to note that Hilary talks about an entirely different kind of disengagement.

I don't know what you do for a living, but I wonder if "notify the prince" might mean talking to people about your situation - people who may know of suitable jobs, people you've met professionally, etc.

"Moving the city" - changing jobs in itself is moving a city. It might also mean literally moving your home. So does the "moving" part mean a new employer in your same field of work? a whole new field of work? moving house to a place where there's a job? a radical shift in your thinking or life? That's just one phrase and already four very different possibilities.

It also says "inspire trust" - here's what LiSe has to say:

"Do not brag about yourself but be trustworthy, make others know who and how you are and make friends and mutual respect. Then they will approach you for important projects and they will also trust your own enterprises."

Don't necessarily take the bragging part to heart - every word in every commentary doesn't apply equally to every situation - but the general gist of LiSe's commentary does sound like decent job-hunting advice. Maybe it means get in touch with people who already know you're trustworthy?

Another possibility might be a shift in thinking, away from "finding a (normal) job" into "who will pay me quickly"? Is there anyone in your life who could be the "prince" like that?

 eh ? I wasn't saying 'don't work' , I was including in my answer all new approaches to making money which include new ways of working.

I said

I don't see that 42.4 says it's too good to be true. I wasn't saying 'do nothing and it will work out splendidly'.....I more saying try everything, move the city....which might be literal who knows.

I wasn't saying jobs would fall into his lap, having an intention in place doesn't mean 'do nothing'. ..I haven't mentioned disengagement

I know you didn't say (or mean) any of those things, Trojina. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

What I meant to get across was

(1) you (Trojina) addressed Madmaxmel's actual question, which seems to say he doesn't have time or money enough at this point for job-hunting, being hired, and then waiting for his first paycheck. You had suggestions which might help him tomorrow-ish.

(2) the rest of it was just a bit of caution, not in response to your post. It's not unheard of for people to get 42 and see it as a happy hexagram, period end of sentence, and end up disappointed. 25 often does mean being detached or disentangled. And what I might do (or, hopefully, a former me) is think something like, "Oh, that line, I don't know what it means or what to do with it, but look at the hexagrams it gave me! Maybe I can ignore it!"

I'm not saying Madmaxmel is or was thinking anything like that. We don't know what he's thinking or planning. It was just a bit of caution.

I see Lisa, yes it's a wise caution. Sorry for misunderstanding your point.

Hi Madmaxmel. Because this line is so confusing to me, I looked around for examples. I don't know how or if any of it might apply to you. You might want to look for more in hexagram search (top of the page under Search) - I only looked at a few of the results.

A couple of my own readings:

  • I was worried I'd missed out on an opportunity, and got 42.3.4 > 13. My notes say that later on, I picked up on 42.4's notion of "alignment" (Hilary says, "disengage completely from the old, ill-omened city and move into a more harmonious alignment with heaven"). I realized I had done things since the time of the reading which had enhanced my position. I hadn't been as ready, before. People will sometimes say you can't guarantee success, but you can do things to put yourself in position for it. So I wonder if "putting yourself in position" (or a better position) might be a pithy summary?

  • Asking about car repairs. It (the car, not the readings) was turning into a bigger brouhaha than I wanted. I asked, "What if I just get X fixed, and not bother with Y and Z right now?" Yi gave me 42.4 > 25. At the time, I thought it was about the "intermediary" idea (for more on that, see the last example down below) and I should talk to someone else first. I asked about that and got 7 unchanging (a campaign; a focussed objective; getting things done). I have no notes about what I actually did. But in hindsight (today, July 2nd, 2015), I think the readings were confirming that yes, I should just fix the one most urgent thing. (I think, but don't know for sure, that I never did get the other things fixed while I still had that car.)
A few different threads from hexagram search results:

  • In this thread about a relationship, Gato thought the line might refer to a boss rather than a friend, and that there might be some hidden competition. For that particular reading, Gato thought the boss-figure could be the competition. Personally, I can see how "boss" could come from "prince," but I'm not sure where the competition idea comes from.

Another Clarity member, Rodaki, quoted Ewald Berkers (http://www.eclecticenergies.com/iching/):

    42. Benefiting
    Line 4:

    Targeted action,
    speaking openly,
    and compliance,
are beneficial so as to handle reliably the moving of the capital city.

Moving someplace else. Really going for it, openly informing everyone involved, and compliance with regulations, will help things going reliably.

  • Here's where Ewald explains his translation. He thinks the word "prince" might be better translated as "public" or "open," so he gets "speaking openly." He also uses the word "compliance" in his translation, but doesn't explain it (is there something which must be complied with / gone along with?)

    http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?100-42-3-and-42-4-"Speaking-openly"

  • Here's a thread about 42.4 in another romantic context. Willowfox thought it meant "new friendships of an open nature":

    http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?7596-romantic-love-42-4

  • Here's an example of 42.4 > 25 in a business context:

    http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?12418-Next-levels-42-4-to-25

In that thread, Clarity member Elias thought the "Moving to the centre, Notify the prince, he follows" section of 42.4 was about being an intermediary; the person who started the thread had an idea how that might apply to her. I can see how that could be: moving into the middle is being an intermediary (literally a "middleman"), so is notifying someone about something and then having them follow either you or the relayed message.

I wonder if it could also incorporate the idea of a catalyst - a third party which brings two other things together which normally wouldn't react or communicate?

As I said, though, I have no idea if any of this will actually help you...

Another thought. Looking at your question:

"There are a huge number of different ways to get the money?"

Since this was a yes/no question (often not the best kind to ask), I wonder if Yi was essentially saying "Yes," and maybe you are the prince.

And then what Trojina said:

I was including in my answer all new approaches to making money which include new ways of working.

So maybe Yi is saying something like (this is very badly put), "Yes, you're right, I'm notifying you, the prince, to be open to all the many new things - trust me, be inspired, and go move your city."

Or maybe "Yes, there are a huge number of ways" - meaning you will have to do a huge(-ish) number of things to make some money right now? Not directly from the reading, but maybe a few little ad-hoc part-time jobs? Maybe things that pay in cash pretty much immediately, so there's no leadtime?
