I have made a quite substantial investment in a pension fund. I have had lately some concerns about this investment (I mean about the reliability of the company), so I asked the I Ching whether I should pull back or leave things as they are, and received as answer “6” without changing lines. Wilhelm says: “A cautious halt halfway brings good fortune. Going through to the end brings misfortune” (this seems to imply to let the investment stand as it is?). But Blofeld states “With care, affairs can be made to prosper in their middle course, but the final outcome will be disaster” (which seems to imply that if I do not intervene and pull back the outcome is unfavorable). Can anyone please help to make sense of “6” in this context? Thank you.

On hexagram 6, from http://www.jamesdekorne.com/GBCh/hex6.htm
Other titles: Conflict, The Symbol of Contention, Strife, Litigation, Quarreling, Arguing, Lawsuit, "It is important to mind one's step at the very beginning then things will have a chance to work out all right." -- D.F. Hook

To me that doesn't look good in the context of your question. You say you already made the substantial investment; now you have a doubt - is it possible you didn't mind your step at the very beginning? If you are having doubts as to the reliability there must presumably be some pieces of evidence that lead you to doubt the reliability.

There is a lot of talk about needing to be judicious, apprehensive, cautious etc in hexagram 6: perhaps I Ching is pushing you to take some independent financial advice on this investment instrument you have taken out?

I asked the I Ching whether I should pull back or leave things as they are, and received as answer “6” without changing lines.

The conflict appears to exist within yourself about the validity of the investment you have made.

The judgement is clear:
To halt halfway brings good fortune. For your own sake, address this matter now
To carry things through to the end brings misfortune. Ignoring it will be a disaster
It is beneficial to see a great person. Seek out and gain independant advice
It is not beneficial to cross the great river. Undertake nothing until your conflict is resolved

I can see nothing that says "this seems to imply to let the investment stand as it is". (Re-read Wilhelms words.)

What next?
Thus in all his affairs the superior person carefully considers how things begin.

If you have made an unwise investment then you need to be clear in yourself about how it all began - this allows possibility of rectifying any mistakes and at the worst just being aware so that you don't repeat them going forward. Then look at how you can begin again. Develop clear goals about how you want to rectify matters, to resolve the conflict in you, and how best to salvage the situation for the future.

The force working away behind Hex 6 is Hex 37 which encourages the establishing of expectations and finding a place for everything and everything in it's right place. Moving things through the constancy of the woman to a well ordered and peaceful environment.

.... or it may be nothing like this for you.

Good Luck

I think 6.6 is the very essence of doubt. It follows 6.5 where a clear decision has been made but now even so one finds they aren't at peace and keep going back and forth reconsidering. Buyer's remorse? Anyway, the line seems to refer to your uncertainty rather than saying whether you should stay or go. There are a lot of advisers on the internet lately predicting severe inflation is on the horizon and recommending buying gold.
