But to turn back to the subject. Here is my take on the underlying principle, which I would have posted if it weren't for this dam'nd suspection I got:
"..... In this way the holy sages purified their hearts, withdrew, and hid themselves in the secret. They concerned themselves with good fortune and misfortune in common with other men.
1) Wilhelm/Baynes. Ta Chuan. ch. XI excerpt from § 2 p. 316 in the 1968 ed.
Okay, but:

1) that is not the 'subject' of this thread, it is Blog post: Hexagram 3 and the very beginning.

2) that was all written at least a few centuries after the Zhouyi, so no one was around to actually know these 'holy sages'. So, as with other definitions of the 'underlying principles' presented here, it is pretty much based on our beliefs and what we want to believe or not believe. That works for me, but apparently it is a one-way street for some here, meaning they want rationality, evidence and proof of everyone else's beliefs, but want us to take theirs as 'fact' simply because they 'know it to be true.' That's pretty much been the basis for many of the thousands of words shared here.

D. (Sorry, I just couldn't help but butt in at least one more time.)

(As the originator of this thread, can I just say I'm perfectly happy that its subject should migrate to any interesting destination.)

Also, radiofreewill, thank you ever so much for your overview of Richard Cook's work. You make it seem almost approachable.

If the book is based on the Shao Yong matrix, why is the I Ching book laid out differently.
I think the only thing that svenrus was pointing out is that he found the article interesting. That may not answer your question, though someone else here might be able to do that, or not.
