I asked the Yi: Is this the right time to put my house up for sale and received Hexagram29 (The Abysmal) Line 6 -changes to 59 (Dissolving).
2 years ago I closed my retail business in the town in Wales where I've lived for over 20 yrs with a view to starting over elsewhere. My kids are grown up and moved away . I am single . Attempts to relocate have failed and I have so far resisted putting my house on the market until I have firmed up my plans at the other end. Life here has grown steadily more isolated and I feel exactly like the description in Line 6-' Bound in chains.'
Hexagrams:
29 Explicitly warns of (external) dangers (Wilhelm)
Line 6 'Shut in by thorn edged prison walls-for years one does not find the way.' (This exactly describes my situation)
'One must serve one's sentence.'
So do I then resign myself to 'serving my sentence' or do I try to break out?
In other commentaries on this forum for 29:6>59 some have pointed to the possibility of 59 'dissolving' the binding of the main hexagram.
Interpretation here is crucial and I need some help ; at first reading the answer seemed to be- 'No-do not put the house for sale now (Danger-29) and furthermore you have no choice but to endure the term of your imprisonment (Line 6).
This seems quite explicit and yet I am sure there are some who might interpret that the Yi may be speaking of a situation partly of my own making, in which case the remedy would seem to be the exact opposite of the first interpretation: ie I should put the house up for sale and begin a process of 'Dissolving' (59), nevertheless I am not very comfortable with this.
On the other hand I'm not sure I can handle much more solitude and living in a place which feels like a 'dead zone'.
Help with this paradox most welcome.

29.6 is generally where one has to serve the term of a circumstance. no need to attach blame to this. I recall Bamboo getting this line when she fell off her bike and hurt herself. If my memory serves it meant for her just the time it would take to get better, there was no shortcuts. She can correct me if there's more to it than that.

I wonder if your house will sell if you put it on the market ? This could be a very plain prediction that it will take some time to sell and there's not much you can do but wait it out ?

OTOH it could mean "don't put it on the market" because it will be regrettable.

In your shoes I'd just think carefully and try to imagine in what way this might be a regrettable move. If you can think of no reason it would be then put iton the market and be prepared to wait.

I have regretted selling a house....but was eager to move at the time.

You need to do some imagining /thinking around this. Sometimes moving can seem the answer to everything....but is it ? Just a thought.

I am glad to see your question here Orpheus, because I received 29.3.6 > 57 as a general daily reading. I am trying to learn to heed warnings from Yi and so I have been wondering about 29.6.

Someone told me once that the third and the sixth lines sometimes indicate what is LEAVING the situation; if this were true in your case then the interpretation that you can try to break out of the situation would be valid, i.e., what is leaving the situation is the being bound. I do not know how to tell the difference between when the 6th line indicates what is leaving and when it indicates a warning. Perhaps one can tell based on the current situation. If in your current situation you did not feel "shut in", then the line would most certainly be a warning. But you have felt "shut in". So perhaps the line indicates what would leave the situation if you put your house up for sale.

I like Trojan's suggestion to consider how it could be a regrettable move to sell your house. If it sold, is there someway you might be "shut in" in a different way from how you are now?

The phrase, "Do it, and then you will know" comes to mind. If you put your house up for sale and it doesn't move, then the meaning of the reading will become clear.

I wonder what Yi would say if you asked "How do I end my solitude?" or "what is needed to end my solitude?" I've seen some say that they don't get much help from "how" questions, and I'm too knew at this to report success with "how" questions myself. But it seems that is the question you are wanting answered.

Thanks to Trojan and Callingcrane for responses which I am still mulling over. Re points raised by Trojan: I think all of the various interpretations you present are intelligent and possible-but which one? That seems to me to be a perennial problem with the Yi and in some cases like this, where diffferent interpretations prescribe diametrically opposed actions, getting it wrong could lead one to follow exactly the ('dangerous') course not recommended by the oracle-no?
I note that neither of the responses mentioned the possible role of the second hexagram(59-Dissolving) ?
Following suggestion of Callingcrane I did the 'How can I end my solitude?' question and got Hex. 34 Power of the Great- lines 3 4 5 changing to 24 Turning Point. Much more encouraging long term but still left wondering what action to take or not at this time.

Orpheus,

I have been pondering your mentioning of the second hexagram - 59. I find myself wondering about the difference between 29.6 > 59 and 59.6 > 29. What if Yi's answer to your question had been 59.6? Would that seem to be more of a "yes" than 29.6?

If your attempts to relocate have failed, how will selling the house change that? Have you asked, "What about waiting to put the house on the market?"

I don't disagree with the likely possibilities, mentioned before me, but I do suspect that a) this is not a new problem but one you have visited many times before, and b) it's not the end of your world if you sell or stay, it just means adjusting. Nothing critical or dangerous there. I perceive the cords and ropes are wound and tied by your own (repetitive) indecision, and fear and uncertainty of the consequences of moving. 59 relaxes the knots and lets you breathe and gives you freedom of movement, and think without that foreboding sense; more like your liberation from your own ropes and thorns. No matter where you go, there you will be. Nothing to get hung about.

Orpheus, I have the impression that the Yi is only saying that this is not a good market moment to sell the house. Your question specifically mentions "right time". I believe it might take time to either sell the house or sell it at a fair price. Three years seem to be the image of the amount of time it shall take for you to get the reasonable price. The relating hexagram would be your asset dispersing. The fan yao (line 6 of hex. 59) strenghtens this dimension.

I have no idea, that's your job to discover that. Yi's answers are not remotely uniform but tailored to your individual mindset, circumstance...I mean specifically for you.

I don't think one can really sift through a host of interpretations to find the 'right' one because it's going to be very personal, unique in meaning for you at that point possibly.

Understanding what Yi is saying is fully interactive. It cannot really be passive as in a meaning is handed to you.

All we give here is suggestions based on our own knowlege/expereince but living it, really understanding it is your work.....and work it is

Perhaps you need to think some more, ask other questions as you have. I did suggest this

In your shoes I'd just think carefully and try to imagine in what way this might be a regrettable move. If you can think of no reason it would be then put it on the market and be prepared to wait.

Only you can see from behind your eyes.....I don't know what it's like to be there in this conversation with Yi so I do not believe there is such a thing as a 'right' instruction here from me. Some answers seem very obvious even to outsiders. This one isn't without full and comprehensive understanding of all the factors in your life.....which you don't have time to write and I don't have time to read....so I just share what comes to mind

bound by chains?

Thanks again to all for your thoughts. Each looks at the issue from a different perspective. Essentially I beleive it boils down to two (quite different )ways of reading this: either(1)The danger and the 'binding in chains' is a likely consequence of taking action at this time and putting the house on the market or (2) it is an existing condition in which I find myself-possibly through not taking action sooner in which case I should act and 'dissolve the chains'. (Hex 59). I posted it for help exactly because of it is such a hard one to read.
Meng is correct inasmuch as my nature is very cautious and I find myself constantly torn between a desperate desire for change and a fear of making the wrong decision -and it is a big decision. The comments by Mary F resonate with my own view- that is, whatever the deeper issues reflected here the YI is not exactly giving the 'thumbs up' to proceeding at this time. However the thought of 'another 3 years' of waiting in the present circumstances is no good to me either.
This morning I was half awake with the number 59 before my eyes-it was a while before I made the association with the secondary hexagram of this reading from several days earlier. So today I asked:
'Would putting the house up for sale now assist me in dissolving the chains that bind me here in isolation?' I received Hex.5 unchanging: 'Waiting.'
Well, that seems pretty clear if a little depressing. I guess it depends how long.

How long will you have to wait, I'll take a wild guess and say about one more year.

Line 26.6 speaks of three unfortunate years. Line 6 is at the end of the hexagram, ie, you're not in danger of falling into the pit, you're already in there, and the situation is evolving towards being dissolved (59). You're already 'served' 2 years, so maybe one more remaining.

My conclusion would be yes, put it up for sale, because you need to move (59), and/or you need to strive to dissolve (59) the bonds (29.6). Once you do, brace up to wait (5).

How can I end my solitude? 34.3.4.5>24
The overall sense I get is move away from persisting in great strength of character and become more easy-going. You need to use clever techniques (34.3), persevere and not give up (34.4), and dismiss anything/anyone stubborn and argumentative (34.5).

bound in chains?

Thank you Diamanda. This overall analysis definitely strikes chords and maybe blows some of the fog away.
I don't intend to post endlessly on this but I do need to correct my own error re my reading: 'Hex 34 Lines 3,4 and 5 changing to 24.'
It should have read 'Hex 34 Lines 2, 3 and 4, changing to 24.
Thanks again to all who have assisted with this.
