Other than Kabalistic numbers in relationship to word meaning I am not certain if Numerology is a help or a time consumer. Anyone with this knowledge may be of help to me.

Wilhelm gives a fascinating review of chinese numerology which I have come to have a lot of respect for. It is simple to learn. Think of the odd numbers as men and the even numbers as women.

One is a male and no one to compete with. There is no not-self in existence. He is unity filled with potential. This is like hexagram 1. There is thesis. Think of Aries and the first house in astrology.

Two is a female that unites with the male. There is polarity, connection, opposites, location and space. There is antithesis. Think of Taurus and the 2nd house in astrology

Three is two males fighting over one female. There is mind, strategy, cleverness, travel, motion, and synthesis. Think of Gemini and the 3rd house in astrology.

Four brings another female so there are two units, and this brings social order, tradition, family, structure, establishment and boundaries. There is also inertia and stagnation. Think of cancer and the 4th house in astrology.

Five is the unwanted addition of another male into this picture. He is entertainment, competition and creativity. In competition there is ego and the desire to win. Think of Leo and the fifth house.

Six is the addition of another female and so you have a complete governmental system, consisting to two threes, a two and a four, and a one and a five. In any way you look at in, six is a complete number and only details must be dealt with. Think of Virgo and the 6th house.

Seven is the addition of another male. This is the number of the outcaste, and the one who goes to the beat of a different drum. He is not welcome in the group and must stand alone, find God and his own truth. That is like Libra and the 7th house. He must partner with an ideal instead of something real.

Eight brings another female into the picture and it indicates two fours, like two societies, two establishments that are harmonious together. Eight is the number of infinity and unbounded resources. It is the number of total material fulfillment on every level. Scorpio and the eighth house.

Nine is the addition of a male into the picture and although it has everything, he still yearns for more. Nine is the seeker of God and the higher realms, foreign things and someting else besides satisfaction on the level of the senses and material world. But not above the material world, he still is part man and part God now. So nine is a wanderer. Sagittarius and the 9th house.

Ten is a combination of one and zero, this is like the self with unbounded potential (zero is like nothingness filled with potential) that he must actualize. Since nine is gone, ten is a female who must conquer life alone working within the group. Capricorn and the 10th house.

Eleven is like two one's; equals and brotherhood. Aquarius and the 11th house.

Twelve is a one with a two--unity with duality. This is like the fishes of Pisces going in opposite directions. It is total synthesis as a three containing all opposites within unity.

All other numbers combine like this.

I haven't done this system justice in this outline, there is so much more to it, but I just presented it to show the simplicity of the way the system is set up. It relates directly to the birds and the bees. But it is amazing how this system of numerology follows the meanings of the numbers in the western system to a tee.

Hi Jerryd,

There are a couple of books that handle with the I Ching and Numerology.

The first group is connected with the system which is called the Plum Blossom Numerology by the Chinese philosopher Shao Yung (Sung 1011 - 1077). It works with the two known arrangements of the trigrams: Early Heaven / Fu Shi cycle (where the trigrams are standing opposite of each other, like Heaven above, Earth below, Fire at the left, Water at the right, Thunder down left, Wind up right, Mountain down right and Lake up left...) and the Later Heaven where the trigrams are connected with directions and numbers (Magic Square). These books explain in detail the works of this system, which is to complicated and to long to explain in full here.
Some of these books are maybe no longer available, but the last one should.

1. I Ching Numerology by Da Liu
USA: Harper & Row 1979

2. The Tao of I Ching by Jou Tsung Hwa
Taiwan: 1984 Tai Chi foundation /
Charles E Tuttle Co.

There are also books that are connecting I Ching to Astrology and therefore use the numbers of the stems and branches to connect them with trigrams and hexagrams. Stems and Branches are systems of counting days, weeks, months and years in the Chinese calender, and although in the books mentioned above all systems are connected in counting the days acording to the WESTERN calender number 2 actually mentioned below is doing it correctly by connecting it to the number of the stem / branch combination of the particular day, week, month or year in the CHINESE calendar

1. The Astrology of I Ching by Chu & Sherrill
England: 1983 Arkana / Penguin
(originaly 1976 Routledge and Kegan Paul)

2. The Audentic I Ching by Jon Sandifer & Wang Yang
England: 2003 Watkins Publishing

There's a whole tradition in this when you search the Internet...

Hope it's helpfull

Hug,
Frank
