.....I think one can now just press 'update' with the journal open ? Am I right or do I have to close it or something ? I guess the button 'update' wouldn't be there if I had to close to update ?

You're right - just open journal, click 'update' button. (You could try closing it and clicking the button through telekinesis, but this is not covered under the warranty... )
