One of the resources I use for interpreting my readings often speaks of correlating lines. For instance, I recently received 20.2.5 and this particular resource says of line 2 "line 2 is the feminine staying in the place for the feminine and correlates with line 5; thus it is in the shade and sees line 5 from the interior to the exterior. For line 5 it says "line 5 is the king and correlates with line 2, which is the representative line of the bottom trigram; the king can understand his achievements by observing the status of his people. For Hex 6, it talks of lines 2 and 5 not correlating.

So, what exactly does it mean for lines to correlate, especially in interpreting the response? Or is this some other type of analysis of the hex that is erroneous for interpreting the answer? Forgive my ignorance on the subject, just trying to expand my understanding.

Hi-
Below is a little bit from my Dimensions chapter. I personally try to concentrate on dimensions that might have been in place in the authors' minds, and this one didn't come along until the first four Wings were written, six or more centuries later. In terms of the optimism or pessimism of the auspice, there is no statistical correlation with whether or not the pairs correlate. In other words, a 6 3rd and a Top 9 do not produce a happier result than if the lines are both yin or yang. It just wasn't part of the original thinking.
There is one statistically significant thing to note - Lines 2 and 5 get more praise and encouragement than 3 and 6.

Ying or Resonance. Lines in analogous places in the upper and lower Ba Gua, i.e. the line pairs 1-4, 2-5, and 3-6, where one is Rou and the other Gang, are said to resonate, correlate or correspond. Wang Bi (tr. Lynn, p. 29-30) observes that: “Resonance provides an image of shared purpose ... . Thus the fact that, although distant, a line indicates that one can make a move is due to its having acquired a resonant partner.” The Eight Gua which are composed of Trigrams paired with their Opposites (see Fig. 24) are fully Ying. The Chong (Repeated) (Ba) Gua (see Fig. 23) are completely Bu (Not) Ying.

Hi,

Correlation means an access which is available between positions 1 and 4, positions 2 and 5, as well as positions 3 and 6 when the lines on those positions differ in gender.

Hex 6. 3. 6 do have correlation; since both line 3 and 6 do not stay at their right places, i.e. they do not act righteously; they will have conflict if they associate with each other.

Correlation is one of the rules for analyzing the hexagram or the line; it is not possible
or necessary to adopt all the rules for each case, since when Chow Yi provided a hexagram or a line with the text, it had already confine them to a certain category.

Best regards
