The bank started to send my father's checking account statements unsealed. He is fearing that this could lead to identity theft.

Why did the bank send my father's checking account statements unsealed? 44.4 Coupling to 57 Subtly Penetrating.
Line 4 says, "In this basket, no fish. Rising up, pitfall." Is it that they forgot?
Are the changing hexagrams telling me that the bank is working against my father's safety?

Hi Fanofenka
It sounds like your father is being troubled by the open envelope and has a low tegard for banks and their practices. He is fearful that a part of him will be stolen. This sounds like a deep fear for him.
It is always difficult to see clear solutions in readings where the question focuses on things other than our own attitudes and situations. Here you are trying to see inside of the big workings of a bank and how their 'mistakes' are eating away at you father. That's a complex thing to work on! Not surprisingly, all that you have come up with from the reading are more questions.

This may help you a bit, or it may not . I look at my readings and when I come up with another question, or questions, I think mostly that I may have missed the message that the Yi was offering me. This is the time to sit more with the divination already made. I then try to look at what I asked and what was given as a response from wider perspectives or different angles, until I come up with a view that isn't asking another question. In this case, the approach I might take is, maybe the answer has nothing to do with the envelope, or the bank. Perhaps it's more to do with your father's fear or a comment on the wider picture still - "what is the trap/ pitfall that line 4 talks about?" - it can be all sorts of things.

I write down my thoughts - however weird they may be - and then come up with the best guess I have on what the answer might be; I have now got a stake in the ground and I can work from there. Even if I can't see it all clearly, now is the time to be patient I wait for things to unfold a bit more - perhaps I see practical solutions that will help me get closer to an answer. Only if things remain murky do I raise other question (if needs be - do I really need to ask again?) on the Yi based on what I have understood from the first response. Then it's like getting into a conversation.

It might help you develop your relationship with Yi to find your best guess answer here and if you feel able it would be really great to hear what this reading means for you. Remember you can't be wrong. Anything anyone else writes is not the answer meant for you but is what they see - two completely different things!

Good Luck

44.4 In the basket no fish.
Your concern that the statement - fish- rises up out of the envelope - basket - and is lost or that the information falls into the wrong hands.

57.Subtle penetration.
Your act of questioning the IChing in an effort to see if this was intentional.

While I don’t see anything here that makes me feel there was criminal intent, “subtle penetration” does make me think you are being guided to not just ignore the incident. Perhaps this is the bank’s “subtle” way of getting people to forgo written statements and to sign up to have their statements delivered online? Anyway, seems like it’s worth calling the bank and making a few subtle inquiries!

Epictetus, the stoic philosopher, in The Discourses, Book Two, Chapter 7, How we ought to use divination.

What then leads us to frequent use of divination? Cowardice, the dread of what will happen. This is the reason why we flatter the diviners. “Pray, master, shall I succeed to the property of my father?” “Let us see: let us sacrifice on the occasion.” “Yes, master, as fortune chooses.” When he has said, “You shall succeed to the inheritance,” we thank him as if we received the inheritance from him. The consequence is that they play upon us.

You feel the topic of unsealed envelopes is more interesting than most people's lives then ? Not sure what you mean exactly ?

I was posting in response to russell's post. I think Fano should feel free to ask the oracle anything he wants without concern of being called a coward. And yeah, complaining about somebody posting a question to the I Ching on a website designed for posting questions to the I Ching does strike me as a sign of someone who has waay too much time on their hands...

You can't really think this is the bank's subtle way of getting people to forgo written statements ? I mean you can imagine the meeting at the bank

Manager "Now people we need to find a way to stop people wanting paper statements. Any ideas ?

underling. "Well we could offer incentives possibly ?"

M. Nah too complicated, anyone else ?

another underling. "Well we could email them and tell them all statements will be online from now on but that if they want a paper statement they can ask for one. People rarely do ask for one so problem solved."

M. Not bad, not a bad idea at all but a little dull don't you think, I'm looking for something with a bit of flair that sets us apart from the run of the mill banks. We pride ourselves on a an unexpected approach to finances.

first underling. (excitedly) I know, why don't we not seal the envelopes down and then people will get worried and then they will ask for online statements.

M. Brilliant you are management material.

it's not likely is it. I mean it's not a really efficient way of making sure people have online rather than paper statements, it's a bit hit and miss to say the least. I'd hazard a guess the gum on the envelope was not up to the job.

Since I have an online account, I get my statements online. Rosada, my dad also has an online account but he still gets statements by mail. I called them and the fraud asked me if they can put a stop on the account. Fortunately, there weren't any suspicious transactions.

Your question was this

Why did the bank send my father's checking account statements unsealed? 44.4 Coupling to 57 Subtly Penetrating.

That is what you asked us. You have now spoken to the bank so did you ask them what you asked us ?? Did you ask them why they sent the statement unsealed ? That is what you posted the thread about so did you ask the bank about that ?

If you started a thread with this question about why the statement was unsealed please tell me you asked them too and you have an answer to this question now ?

Yes. I mean, will those of us who don't ever ask Yi about things which look like "trivia," or who don't ever ask Yi "too many" questions, or ask questions out of anxiety or frustration, or don't ever do anything else which gets criticized please raise their hands? I'm sure there's probably some, but I doubt it's the majority.

Also, it's a lot easier to see "bad divining" when it's someone else's. It's even a lot easier to see your own bad divining when you're safe on the other side of the situation. And it gets easier to stop yourself from doing some of these things the more you learn and know.

Having said that - Fanofenka, it is tiring to people when you post as many threads as you do, especially since you often don't follow up in them. Interpreting readings takes time and mental energy, and human nature dictates that people aren't thrilled to do that when someone barely seems to notice the effort. I hope that makes sense? People appreciate knowing that you've heard what they've said about your readings, and how the situation turned out. Engagement with your threads after you post them, instead of just posting new ones. Some indication that you're trying to learn from what people say.

If you don't do that, can you understand how it looks like you didn't really care about your readings after all - and if you don't care, why should anyone else?

Do you actually think none of this has been said before many many times ? Really ? Well guess what it has.

What then leads us to complain about other people’s use of frequent divination?

1. It was not a complaint, it was the words of Epictetus the philosopher, whose opinion I value highly.
2. I do not understand the personal attack. I presented the above “for your consideration”; anyone is free to disagree.
3. As to minding one’s own business, is it never permissible to step back and offer, as an answer, “You may be overdoing it?”

Let me put it this way: Fanofenka, many of the subjects that you consult the I Ching about are everyday matters that most people handle themselves. Do you ever think that you might be too dependent on an external source of knowledge? It has happened to people in the past. But no one is telling you not to consult.

Having said all that, I will not interfere with the discussion any further. And in case you were wondering, 35:6 — 16.

Everyone:

This is the kind of thread where it's really hard to have an open discussion and still avoid making personal attacks. I know it's difficult and there are grey areas, but please try to keep it civil.

I too am partial to a bit of stoic commentary from times past.

“We are not privy to the stories behind people’s actions, so we should be patient with others and suspend judgement of them, recognizing the limits of our understanding.” – Epictetus

Fanofenka,

Based on the subject matter, and the line itself, I have to ask:

Was there much less money in the bank account than you previously thought there was?

Everything is consistent. However, my dad made a separate payment towards the outstanding principal on the mortgage.

I asked you directly once, perhaps you missed my post. You said you had called the bank and so as your question, the reason for this thread, was about why the bank sent the statement unsealed. That is what you asked Yi. We've not yet had any response to what the bank said about this ? As you felt it important enough to start a thread on it here I felt it might be very useful for the archives and for everyone involved in the thread if you would tell us what the bank said in answer to your question about why the envelope was unsealed. If you didn't ask them about this matter perhaps you would indicate that ?

Many thanks in advance for supporting Clarity's archives. The archives are full of threads not returned to and questions left hanging which is always a pity both for those who answered and for those who are searching the archives to see previous examples of their own cast.

Apart from that in the 'How to Post a Reading' sticky it does ask you return to update on what happened in regards to your question. Your actual question, the one you asked and started a thread about that is.
