Darkness and Dispersion

So I finally did a divination on this situation that i've been unable to take much action in changing.

I had someone who is somewhat a mentor to me, who has been a teacher to me for about a decade, come up to me and disrespect me to my face. I did not really put up any fight, because he choose the time and place, and I had other things to do. For me it made no sense, and came from nowhere. I didn't know how to respond to it, So I just shook his hand and thanked him for his input. Things with this guy have often been edgy. Since then I have not spoken to him or seen him. It's almost been a year now.

So I threw a divination and this is what I got:

"Any advice to me on X?" (x being the guy i'm talking about)

36.1.2.3.5.6 -> 59

That is allot of change going on. Which I think can perhaps describe the intensity and difficulty of this situation aptly.

Line 1: shows gossiping going on. Which is about me. He told me people were gossiping about me.

Line 2: Perhaps illustrates the injury to the relationship? It appears it isn't fatal. That is, it can go on? Not sure.

Line 3: Seems as though some kind of luck has gone in the direction of clearing things up. Not sure.

Line 5: Perhaps shows me in my situation. I am stuck, and unconvinced by pretty much everything he said.

Line 6: Some kind of downfall, of whatever that started this? Pretty dramatic line.

59

Can represent a ending of a relationship, or perhaps it can represent a ending of a negative aspect to it. Not sure.

---

So I was trying to ascertain what I should do. Weather I should continue with this guy or not. I have left the city of residence where I used to live. So I'm nowhere near him now.

But this hexagram: 36 doesn't advice giving up. In fact I can't think of a hexagram that does. I think the major theme of 36 is persevere in adversity. as the judgement mentions.

Any advice to interpreting this would be appreciated.

Look at the single unchanging line: 36.4: "You are in a fine position to perceive the present situation with clarity. If it appears hopeless and doomed, as it well might, now is a good time to exit" (Wing).

"We find ourselves close to the commander of darkness and so discover his most secret thoughts. In this way we realize that there is no longer any hope of improvement, and thus we are enabled to leave the scene of disaster before the storm breaks" (Wilhelm).

Of 36 generally, Wing notes" "this situation can help you learn to accept times of evil. If one attempts to aggressively deny or ignore evil, then evil is often nurtured in one way or another. Good and evil are as much a part of the Cosmos as night and day. It is much easier to develop a sound character once evil is acknowledged and accept it as part of the world."

59: Let it go, wholly and unconditionally. Red rover red rover let Karma take over.

Interesting, never thought of looking at the unchanging lines...

Thx for your reply, I can see how you would see it that way.

Hopefully i can get some further feedback and reach a sort of average consensus

I agree with Elias......with so many lines changing in 36, it moves the emphasis to 59.
does it describe a situation where you felt unsafe to be yourself?

also agree that that the line not changing might be the key. you understand something now about this relationship in a timely fashion, the opportunity to leave an unwholesome liaison before it became unbearable.
dispersing your connection while maintaining your dignity was correct.

Usually when i'm around that group I feel unable to be totally myself. But I generally feel that allot.

I'm still hoping for more replies on that first divination but I went ahead an tried to narrow it down.

I asked first:

"Please comment on contacting X"

I got 35.2 -> 64

"Please comment on moving on and forgetting about X"

I got Hexagram 8 unchanging

35.2 seems to imply bearing with a uncomfortable situation in order to make progress.

Hexagram 8. Can be allot of things.

35.2 Mixed responses across the spectrum -- either remain in contact, though not happily, or remove yourself from contact because it's a destructive situation, though this is not a happy decision either. Only you can decide.

64 -- It ain't over 'till it's over. What you do not (& perhaps can not) know is what motivated the other person in this exchange. Perhaps in time all will be made clear -- whether the stress of a situation wholly outside of you and your mentor prompted this, or whether he has some misunderstanding about you, or has carried forward some old exchange with you that's grown into this outburst... IF your relationship has always been "edgy" perhaps he's carrying some other-than-mentorish feelings toward you that found expression in an inappropriate manner. Lots of possibilities; time will tell. When 64 occurs in the context of an old relationship, it may indicate that you are on the mind of that other person also.

Hex 8 could indeed mean a lot of things. Based on what you describe, I'd say it means mostly to hold to what you know to be correct in yourself. Don't throw yourself away trying to mend something broken by another. Retain an open mind and, insofar as you may have future contact, act in the moment rather than in response to the past or in apprehension of the future.

Thanks. I think your on the right track. He does hold some grudge about something in the past - which I am in fact unaware of, he will never let me in on the secret...

I cannot see how 35.2 would suggest remove oneself from contact in response to asking of contacting.

... If I did contact the guy, I don't predict bringing up anything to him about being unhappy or dissatisfied. It's kind of like. OK you contact him so your pretty much biting your tongue.

Frankly from this behavior, I see him as not my equal. Allot of students have left him also... Every one of them in fact. So bringing up any grievance to him is sort of not applicable... But who knows what would happen if I did contact him. Maybe it would work itself out.

This forum really seems dead lately. I would really like to get a bit of extra help if that is possible.

I prepared a statement for this guy,

"saying thanks for everything you've don in the past,
Thought about what you said, didn't find all of it that helpful,
Perhaps this is about something in the past? I don't know what it could be
but would be willing to talk about it."

... (thats not everything but all the details I think are important)

I asked the Yijing calling him with this message (expecting to get his machine)

I got 39 unchanging.

So I asked: If I call X who should I conduct myself?

I got 38.1.2.6 -> 16

Which according to the online reading means:

38. Estranged

Line 1:

Aversion goes away.
The lost horse didn't run away by itself again.
See the dislike.
The other is without fault.

The other person doesn't want to be with one. Try to see what the other dislikes, as this other person isn't wrong here. One will get used to the situation.

Line 2:

One happens to be master of the place.
Without fault.

In this place and situation, one happens to be boss. Nothing wrong with that.

Line 6:

Alienated and alone.
Seeing a swine carrying mud,
overcoming the ghost that was once carried.
First he draws his bow,
then he loosens his bow.
It is not enmity, but a love marriage.
Go and meet the rain,
and thus good fortune.

Through a misunderstanding one sees the other negatively. This makes one feel separated and alienated from the other. By looking at the situation again, or talking to the other, the misunderstanding will be resolved, and things will go well.

Hexagram is changing to:

16. Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm.
It is beneficial to appoint marquis and to have the army march.

Enthusiastically get things going. It is a good idea to get people to do things for you.

----

So this interpretation of

line 1: says X isn't wrong. I find that a unique interpretation of the line. Usually the Yijing doesn't take sides in anything.

Line 2: Line 2 makes simply zero sense. Unless it's telling me i'm in control of my own life.

Line 6: Shows me being alienated through misunderstandings. I am seeing the situation more worse than it really is. Well the guy did say allot of critical things about me. Really ran me down with allot of insults. But your right... maybe it isn't so bad. I guess I don't get the sympathy of being weak here. I have to let those insults go along with all his passion and take it as him being helpful...

16

I've often heard this interpreted as symbolizing the future. Enthusiasm could mean the manner in which I should conduct myself. Maybe I shouldn't even bring the issue up? I've thought about that. Just not even responding to it.

...

I kind of like LISE's interpretations on the lines a bit better for this situation:

38 line 1:

Initial 9 : Regrets go away. Lost horse, do not chase it, it returns by itself. Seeing evil people, without fault.
Many situations can be solved by waiting instead of action, often even especially then. Do what you want to do, but refrain from reacting. It is not you, who reacts, it is the situation causing you to. And if you suspect someone of doing harm to you, then wait with action until you have real proof. Then you act according to reality, instead of reacting to emotions.

38 line 2:

9 at 2: Meeting the master in an alley. Without fault.
Live YOUR life, not A life, adapting to the commonly accepted way of life and its rules. For you only your own rules - or universal rules - are valid. It is a huge compliment to be called weird, it proves your individuality. You have to play your own role, so go ahead.
(Changes to hex.21)

38 line 6:

Above 9: Looking askance, alone. Seeing a pig with mud on its back, a cart loaded with ghosts. At first he draws his bow, later he relaxes his bow. No bandit, a marital suitor. Proceeding encountering rain: as a rule auspicious.
Make your looks and actions comprehensible for other people. If they have to guess about you or your aims, they might guess wrong and shoot. Never expect them to accept you just like that, give them reason to trust you. Show your intentions. A meeting is always tense until each knows the other, then comes relief.
(Changes to hex.54)

I'm wondering if this is just saying... Don't even bring it up. I was thinking this was probably the path of least resistance before I ever casted the Yijing.

I think what 38 is showing is a misunderstanding. Which 36.1 seems to show as well.

I think if I contact the guy it should probably be to move past this.

One of the things he said, is that I could not teach what he has taught me, without his permission. That has been his rule. But since things are in such a state now. I've moved out of the city, no vision of returning for any period of length to study with him again.

Well it's been the one reason to contact him.

So I thought I would for a while, but I could never just get around to doing it.

So I asked the Yijing:

What If I just taught, without permission from X?

I got 63.2 -> 5

So it seems then at that point things would be finished with him. Line 2 says, there is no reason to run after acquiring this: Permission. And that in the future hexagram 5 shows I'd probably be able to find some new teacher.

Honestly I just cannot see any reason to contact the guy... and it is a sweet time to leave. Sad, but it's always been really sketchy and weird with this guy. I've endured a long time with him. Ten years. I wonder if maybe my life will get better if he is absent from it.

I hope someone reads all this...
