Wanderer...

That's not what I asked you. I asked how many of you are there sitting at your computer since it's absolutely inappropriate for you to speak for anyone but yourself without their express permission. If you were to start your statements with "I believe..." or "I feel..." then that would be acceptable. Otherwise, I do not give you permission to speak for me.

Further, since you insist yet again (rather than answer my question) that you find evidence of a higher self and lesser selves in the Yi, I'd like to know in what version you find such evidence. I copied the text of Book I of the W/B version from a website and pasted it into an MSWord document so that I could use the find-and-replace function to find the references you seem to find, and there is no mention whatsoever of 'lesser self' or 'lesser selves' in the entire text...so it certainly can't be the Wilhelm/Baynes version.

I also looked for the words 'higher self' and 'inner self' and found no mention of either. I did, however, find two references to 'inner being.'
<BLOCKQUOTE>"This refers to the involuntary influence of a man's inner being upon persons of kindred spirit."

"The root of all influence lies in one's own inner being."</BLOCKQUOTE>
There was no mention whatsoever of 'higher being.'

I searched for the frequency of the words 'higher' and 'inner' without 'self' or 'selves'. I found 'inner' mentioned 102 times (only two of those times referred to inner trigrams). The following qualities (in alphabetical order) were mentioned in association with 'inner' one or more times:
<BLOCKQUOTE>inner affinity
inner assent (not ascent, Wanderer)
inner attitude
inner authority
inner being
inner calm
inner cause
inner certainty
inner cheerfulness
inner clarity
inner composure
inner concentration
inner conditions
inner connection
inner consistency
inner content
inner conviction
inner delusion
inner detachment
inner development
inner dignity
inner enlightenment
inner enrichment
inner equilibrium
inner freedom
inner independence
inner influences
inner instability
inner laws
inner light
inner nature
inner necessity
inner opposition
inner oppression
inner peace
inner power
inner pressure
inner purpose
inner relationship
inner resolve
inner restlessness
inner security
inner seriousness
inner shock
inner strength
inner superiority
inner truth
inner wealth
inner worth</BLOCKQUOTE>
'Higher' was only mentioned 27 times. The following qualities associated with 'higher' were mentioned one or more times.
<BLOCKQUOTE>higher aims
higher aspects
higher cause
higher element
higher goals
higher nature
higher in rank (referring to wife and husband)
higher level
higher regions (Heaven)
higher sense
higher station
higher place
higher position
higher truth</BLOCKQUOTE>
Higher was mentioned alone several times in the context of:
<BLOCKQUOTE>higher or lower pleasures
the higher the sun rises...
water does not rise higher than the lowest point of the rim.
Four light lines have entered the hexagram from below and are about to ascend higher.
If a bird will not come to its nest but flies higher and higher, it eventually falls into the hunter's net
and a few more</BLOCKQUOTE>
So there go a whole lot of the few 'higher's I did find...right into the hunter's net.

'Inner' is used frequently in conjunction with outer:
<BLOCKQUOTE>"His inner power is adequate to the increased outer activity."

"Only this combination of inner strength with outer reserve..."

"Gentleness that is adaptable, but at the same
time penetrating, is the outer form that should proceed from inner calm."</BLOCKQUOTE>
'Lesser' only comes up once in the entire book and not in association with higher...'lesser moment' (Hexagram 22).

Additionally, in reading the terms 'superior man' and 'inferior man' in context, the evidence just does not support your premise that they refer to higher and lesser selves. Such lines as "If the superior man persists, Misfortune comes." indicate that the superior man cannot possibly be a higher self. A higher self would not persist. It would be the lesser selves that would persist. 'Superior man' refers to the whole person and/or describes or advises a superior behavior.

Hexagram 38 says:
<BLOCKQUOTE>"The oppositions of heaven and earth, spirit and nature, man and woman, when reconciled, bring about the creation and reproduction of life. In the world of visible things, the principle of opposites makes possible the differentiation by categories through which order is brought into the world."</BLOCKQUOTE>
Heaven and earth, spirit and nature, man and woman and inner and outer are polarities. Reconciliation of the polarities is necessary for integration. A higher self and lesser selves are not polarities...they are a hierarchy.

It is quite clear to me from my findings that the authors of the Yi were much more focused on the yin and yang of inner and outer than on the hierarchy of higher and lesser. And it is no surprise to me, after this research, that I abandoned the use of higher and conscious selves for inner and outer selves when I began to delve deeper into the Yi.

I agree very much with what Anonymous said to you in the "Superior Woman" about your distortion of Daoism to suit your needs. Whether it be to hold onto Christian doctrine or not, I feel strongly that you have distorted the words of the Yi as well to support your needs... to justify your need. And the concept of the higher self controlling the lesser selves that you keep trying to hammer into people here in this forum is in direct conflict with what the mental health profession today and the age old YiJing try to encourage... reconciliation and integration.

Peace, love and Seasons Greetings...

Wanderer...

One more thing. Inner and outer are not about schizophrenia or MPD. But I think you know that. I have no idea, but I can certainly guess why you'd say such a thing.

I'm not going to bother explaining to you either because it seems to me that you don't really want to know anything that might loosen that firm grip you have on your higher self/lesser selves concept.

Love,

Val
