Hi everyone,

My boss recently found out that one source of funds was being withdrawn and we would have to let one or two people go. It's a very difficult choice, since each person has different strengths and weaknesses, but finally we narrowed it down to either persons A and B, or persons A and C. (poor A) Still it's difficult, so I suggested asking Yi who to let go.

We got 59.6 for A and B, and 51 for A and C. My advice was to let A and B go, because 59 is about dispersion, which is actually the topic, dispersing employees, and line 6 meant my boss would stay out of danger, whereas the 51 for A and C would indicate lots of disturbing moments, which fits because C has lots of eclectic knowledge which comes in handy for resolving those problems.

Then we found out only one person needed to go, either A or B. Still very difficult - A is harder to work with, but has a slight edge technically. So this time I cast, and got 13.4 for A, and 41 for B. My question this time was about keeping the person.

My advice this time was to keep A, because line 4 says cannot attack, changing to Family, whereas B got Decline, which actually refers to the topic, decline in staff, similar to the 59 I mentioned above.

I'm feeling a bit unsure about this, especially since we were both leaning to keeping B.

Anyone have any comments? Is this a valid way to see things?

Hi Pakua,

Yi definitely seems to favor keeping A. 13.4 is quite interesting in this regard, since you mention that he is a little harder to work with, and I found Wilhelm to address this specifically:

"He climbs up on his wall; he can't attack. Good fortune."

A is a bit on the defensive, but he/she can do no real harm. Since A's skills have the competitive edge, keeping A seems like wise council.

Thanks Bruce. Interesting that you picked up that A is defensive. Also interesting that A seemed a goner at the beginning, and yet he survived. The main reason for that I think is because he's more of a loner, and therefore he doesn't fit into the group as well, so he was at the top of our list.

Just shows how, even when you try to be objective and ignore bias, it's still there. We need to pick the one who is best for the department, not the one we like the best.
