Frost and Ice cover the ground as a coat : It is the cold season; That season where, wrapped within the Earth, everything retires and rests. Frost is water, meaning a gift from Heaven : Yin is right away postponed according to Yang. To Spring’s fruitfulness and flourishing Summer follows the long germinating in the frosts of Autumn and the roughness of Winter.

Walking on frost is delicate, it requires suppleness. On ice too, rigidity and impetuosity can cause certain disappointments ( frustrations). But Ice, which will eventually become an attribute of the trigram Heaven, suggests, by its solidity, the behaviour to adopt at this entry level. In the total surrender of Yin operates a crystalisation where form gains consistency : Rather than being precipitated, one must wait with a certain firmness before an advance can occur and a direction be established.

履 Walking : Name of hexagram 10 (Lü), the entry to the situation is described by an image in relation to going forth. The choice of the name of this hexagram to characterise it evokes a critical moment inviting the respect of rituals and rhythms and to be twice as attentive. The prudent and supple walk of the Tiger, emblematic animal at Lü (10), is an example of the supple and firm attitude to respect at this level.

霜 Frost : The ideogram, which figures only here, is written by associating the character Rain, general symbol of meteorological phenomenon, with a group meaning Mutual. It shows the reciprocity relationship between Water and Frost, which interchanges one in the other according to night and day. This is particularly noticeable in northern China, at the end of Fall, the calendrical period called by the peasants ‘’White Frost’’.

氷 Ice : Combining the symbol for Water and that of Ice Crystals, the ideogram describes exactly what it designates. It is only found here. Ice is an attribute of Heaven because of its position at the beginning of Winter (North West), according to King Wen’s disposition.

堅 Solid : Formed with the symbol for Earth and a complex group, the ideogram covers a broad range of meanings not far from that used to describe the character for Qian’s (1) Great Image (Force). As with Lü (10), the choice of this character, used exclusively here, echoing the evokation of Water, a Yin symbol, at the beginning of a Yang movement ( as is seen in Qian’s (1) first level : The Deep Waters.

至 Arrives : The ideogram’s most popular use is To Arrive at, To Reach, Until and, by extension, The Most, The Highest, Extremely. Usually used to highlight the arrival of new elements in a situation (Companions, Brigands…) it can also announce a new beginning.
