Etymology of Kun(2) Transition level

The full expression of the Yin capacities described at this level, very place of Yin sovereignty, could become insistent and influence too much contrivance. Although a certain force is generally recommended at this level of transition, the reserved tone characteristic of the Receptive Impetus, expressed here by serving the King, is understood as an advice to reserve.

One that does not seek to be in the limelight nor exercise his talents loudly sees unravelling many possibilities of action. If by chance one is involved in some project or undertaking, the required behaviour is of the same order : When one knows how to promote without imposing his point of view or his authority, all can be accomplished. At this transition level to the outside (upper), not pushing the limits is the better way to see things through.

含 Distinction : The ideogram, still much in use, designates what differentiates parts from the whole : Chapters of a book, measure in a musical partition ( the lines of an hexagram do not figure in this category for a term already exist to designate them).

章 Contained : Assembled with the symbol for Mouth and a character meaning Being there but invisible, the ideogram, which is part of the composition of the word ‘’Yin’’, means Contained In The Mouth, Kept In The Mouth, Hidden, Held, To Contain.

含 章 Distinction Contained : Rare formula, evoking a fertile contention. It is only quoted twice in the Yi Ching and always in a context of fructification in a fertile relation with Heaven; As is seen in Gou’s (44) fifth level.

可 貞 Omen of Possibilities : Mantic formula whose sense is not completely set. It suggests moments that are carrier of potentiality characterised by a certain contention , expressed here by a Reserve, at Wu Wang’s (25) fourth level by a Retinue and at Sun’s (41) Judgement by Reduction.





或 That by chance : The ideogram, representing a Country Without Precise Frontiers, is a sign of doubt, of indetermination.

従 王 事 Serve a King : Classic expression in three characters. The first one means To Follow, To Conform, To Obey. From this idea of being At One’s Service, it can also mean To Direct as in to take care of ( like a Vassal) the Sovereign’s affairs. The second is the word King and the third means, as a name, Affairs, Situation, Event, Occupation, Job and, as a verb, To Do, To Execute, to Take Care Of, To Serve ( a superior).

成 有 終 To Bring to term : The ideogram means To Accomplish, To Perfect, To Finish. Evoking originally what comes after a determined action, this character, still much used, came to designate in Chinese philosophy Yin’s production mode, resumed by a proverb famous for its rhythmic assonance :

Yang Sheng Yin Cheng

Which means Yang brings to life and Yin completes. To Bring to terms was chosen according to this context.

或 従 王 事 - 元 成 有 終 That by chance one may serve a King – Not to Bring to terms : This phrase is found identical and at the same level in Song (6), the only difference between the two situations is distinctive here by the following phrase which does not figure after Song’s third level.

有 終 Allows Accomplishment : Specific formula composed with two characters of which the first one is the auxiliary verb There Is, playing in the Yi Ching the role of a modulation reinforcing what is announced by highlighting its effective character. The second is a mantic term found elsewhere as In The End. It confirms the effective realisation of an accomplishment.

元 成 有 終 Not Bringing to term allows Accomplishment : Thanks to the supple adaptability of Yin, what needs to be done, as long as one does not tighten-up by imposing means To See It Through, Will Find Its Own Way By Its Own Self. Compared to Song’s (6) third level, where the text insists on the attitude of retinue without evoking any result, this Accomplishment echoes that described at Qian (15) where the aptitude to see things through twice concerns the Accomplished Chief : At the Judgement and the third level.
