Hallo Everyone,

Was hoping if anyone could help me out with this- I went to a university open day yesterday to see what courses they had on offer for next year- I attended this university several years ago and got a diploma in a field related to what i really wanted to do, which was film.

Yesterday i got chatting to one of the film lecturers, I told her my background and she very helpfully said that she would meet me to view my portfolio and give me some advice. I have her email and will send along some stills of my previous film work to show her in the next few days.

I asked 'What will happen if i go to film school?'

10 .2 .4 .5 > 27

I understand 10 refers to conduct? and the necessary steps to get out of the way of danger?

As always, thanks a million for any reply

Alfred Huang (autor of The complete I Ching): If there are three moving lines, consult only the middle one. He continue: "The original meaning of Lü (hex 10) is a pair of shoes. From shoes, the meaning was extended to include treading upon something and then carrying out ones duty or fullfilling ones agreement. In Chinese, fulfillment is made of two characters: lü xing. Literally, lü means shoes, and xing means walking. To the chinese, walking with shoes symbolizes moving forward with firm steps, advancing to fulfillment. Both Wilhelm and Blofeld translate Lü as treading, conduct. In this book (the complete I Ching), it is translated as Fulfillment." He (A. Huang) goes on: "Significance, Fourth Nine. - The fourth line is yang. A yang element at a yin place* is not correct. However, a yang element at a yin place is better than a yin element at a yang place. One in this place is strong but able to be humble. So he treads upon a tigers tail with utmost heed. This is the proper attitude to adopt when dealing with a troublesome situation. In this way the end will be turned from evil to good. On the other hand, a yin line at a yang place means that one is weak; the problem is that she likes to pose as strong, but lacks self-knowledge."
* first line is yang, second is yin, third is yang, fourth is yin, fifth is yang and six is yin ie. even numbers are yin and odd numbers are yang.
The Yao text (still A. Huang): Fourth nine:
"Treading upon a tigers tail
with heed, heed,
Ends in good fortune.
Heed, heed, ends in good fortune;
One keeps on fulfilling one's will."

It'll be a walk in the park for you, yxeli, because you already have a background in art, I think. But whether it will put food on the table is another question. There are doubts about film school for professional employment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_school

Do you have a creative vision that film school will fulfill? Any work on Youtube?

I think your question is not very helpful! Think about it - what will happen if I go to film school...what do you mean? What will happen on the course, what will happen in your "life" what will happen a week next tuesday? Its a book of changes and you are asking for something fixed and unchanging that encounters nothing on the way.....

I agree that 10 is steps towards something and it is, in your case steps in the context of nourishing which can be anything from earning to doing what "satisifies the soul" (in the Bob Marley sense). I suspect the reading is describing your current situation and not "predicting" anything.......

10.2 is doing what you want to do... what matters to YOU and not necessarily conforming to what you "should" do....
10.4 is putting yourself on the line in some way... maybe internal questions about whether this is the right direction or not - a bit of self awareness is needed
10.5 is very one pointed which is a good attitude for film making but not good if film making is not what you are cut out for, because 10.5 has the inbuilt risk of you not seeing something....

This is why I think the reading is reflecting what's going on with you right now.

A non-Y comment: the wikipeadia entry on this - it is totally American and conflates film with Hollywood although the debate about film school or not is valid. Most people go to film school to get their hands on kit and training and contacts. But what do you mean by "film school"?

If you already have a diploma (what's that a PgDip?) and not in "film studiies" or "media studies" then I would question why you want to go? I don't know if you are in N or S Ireland but its not a good time to get into debt for studies in a field that is so tough and if you are going into debt then it really matters where you study. Too many universities and courses are in the business of selling dreams to get bums on seats. so its vital that you go to the one of the very few good courses....

If you have already had some training them what have you done in between? Do you have some show reels? Have you worked as a runner? Have you been involved with the business in any way? If not then maybe you need to ask some hard questions and if you really want to do this, plot a very clear route.

I have worked in documentary (I'm a journalist) and my "hobby" is experimental film with a minor obession in cinematography... I have a few friends who work in the film business one way or another. If you are talking about going somewhere like the National Film and Television School then I would say if you can get in, go for it, but if it is a degree in film making I would suggest really exploring all the options first. What do you want to do exactly? Is it documentary or features or what? Do you want to go the cinematography route (which needs a science brain) or costume design or lighting or what?

Where ever you go most people start of as unpaid or minimum wage runners to learn the ropes and most don't get past that unless they have a lot of drive and stamina. If you really want to do it and you have a very clear vision and a lot of determination (see those lines in 10.2.4.5....) then ignore everyone and do it. But clear vision from self-examination and determination are the keys not only to film making but interestingly also to your lines...

Maybe a hard nosed bit of self examination and some better defined Y questions might help?

Svenrus- Yeah I don't follow that particular doctrine - I reckon that every changing line matters and i take them all in equal value- i dont know why the yi would come back with more then one changing line otherwise.

Pocossin- see thats the thing with this forum! Most of your reply was to do with what you already know of me (art etc) from what i've previously posted! But to answer your question yeah i have some film work and scores up on sites from my animation and my music compositions. :)

Lucia- Thanks for the great long reply- Its the national film school and i graduated with a diploma in design for film and tv- then went on to do a degree in animation. Ive worked in film a bit and tbh thats part of why im not convinced about it, and why i asked the yi in the first place.- Ive worked on one big budget Hollywood film ( as well as a few indies) and it was the most cutthroat two weeks of my life. the competition is something that i'm not sure i could handle.

Your very right about the question- i suppose i was just trying to guage the genera situation. It is a dream of mine, its what ive always wanted to do ( in the big dreamy sense of wishing like a child,-and since i was a child) and Its more the industry then anything else thats turned me off so far.

The way you've given me direct questions back was a big help- its basically all the things that ive been thinking about it myself . I think over time i've lost confidence in myself because of how i know the industry works.

I dont think i'm particularly good at team work, networking or sticking my neck out to the detriment of other people- things i know that in this industry are as important (or in my more pessimistic moods and what ive seen of professional filmmaking are More important) then ideas and originality and talent.

it feels like one of those things that in another time or place i couldve done. My biggest dream. and someone will reply and say sometimes dreams are just there to make us aware of what we can actually do, and to keep us in the 'middle'. and tbh i dont think i can realistically do it. but im so sad that i cant :(

Thanks

Music!? I didn't know about music. But, pray, where is this stuff so we can experience it? Why are you hiding your light under a bushel?

No Way! Because my reading was short doesn't mean that my consideration of your presentation was brief. I spent about an hour contemplating your presentation for revelatory features, and I found enough to say what I said. I read and considered the relevant appended texts. I also read about 'film school' because I didn't know what a film school was. And I did not go back and read your previous postings for clues. The one thing I did remember was that your sister had a design for a monument accepted, and my thought was, "Like sister, like sister." My readings aren't cooked from the archive. Cross my heart.

Well Yxeli, think hard because you have some good stuff to work with - does it have to be features right now? I had a massive rug pulled out from underneath me a few years back so I had to sit down and do some brainstorming.... Pages of honest:

what I have in the bag already....
what I'm good at....
What I'm not good at..
what can I develop with help
What I can work with that will actually feed me sooner or later....
Which doesn't mean giving up on your dreams - just maybe reworking them
I think over time i've lost confidence in myself because of how i know the industry works.

Yep I understand that but lost confidence can be found again and that means you have to get involved in "stuff" and not get too isolated... use the skills you have to build on - volunteer them if necessary (to worthy situations) or offer a skills trade.... I'll animate if you do motion graphics/camera work type of thing... shame you are not in London I'd get you busy :D

My business is cut throat too and I understand everything you are saying but you have to find a route through it. Maybe play with 16mm folks or something. And I do find that things develop and there are good people out there (in amongst the twats). It is partly about reslilience but its also about being somewhere where you don't get too introverted about it, somewhere to keep the inspiration and motivation juices flowing.

That's why I play with experimental film making - it combines all the things I love and I can even translate some of it into multimedia journalism but its mine, I do it for me and not for a career (but it overlaps)....

I'd say don't give up and don't beat yourself up either but really check out "routes". Maybe film school will give you back your confidence, but maybe its a waste of money and you could go in a more lateral direction. If you use the Ching then ask very clear q's and stop asking for a heads up or safety net those type of q's don't work.

I think once one's work is 'recognised' the confidence comes bit by bit so work on what you are good at and get it out there. Good luck

I understand. And I must confess that I'm only a beginner. Somehow there occurs situations where a decision have to be taken (must be made ? sorry, my english !) till example:
Hex 28, nine at second and fifth line...
2: A dry poplar sprouts at the root.
An older man takes a young wife.
Everything furthers.

5: A withered poplar puts forth flowers.
An older woman takes a husband.
No blame. No praise.

(Wilhelm-Baynes)

Actually two quite opposite pictures. But somehow I'm confused whether I should follow the one or the others adwise concerning moving lines; many different advises I mean.

I know but that the structure of the hexagrams starts with the first line and ends with the sixth line; that the lower trigram is that which is comming and that the upper trigram is that which is leaving ie - in the above mentioned example - that nine on the fifht line is departing the situation and nine at the second line is arriving the situation; if at all there should be any logic in it.

All in all You'r right in that all moving lines appearing in the consult must have a meaning. Somehow I find it confusing, as mentioned, to deal with two diamentralical opposite pictures in one consultation.

I'm seeing this as the crux of Yi's answer to you: either learn to tread with the tigers (swim with the sharks) or prepare to compromise your abilities for a supposedly easier but less potentially lucrative path. Just keep in mind that swimming in a smaller pond doesn't guarantee the career path will be easier, as competition in small markets and projects can be even more cut-throat and competitive among the piranhas. Of course you could always choose to be a bookkeeper or some other, safer occupation, but just how nourished that would be for you is another matter. On the other hand, once you establish your credentials among the higher ranks in the business, you will have earned the kind of respect whereas you are the tiger.

Thats too much work for an SR reply....far too much work on your pay rate anyway.

I don't do any research when I answer people...I just spew forth the festering contents of my brain and if they don't like it they can answer their own sodding question :D

I can't see that you should put too much effort into it :D

Thanks, Trojan. I like having things come out right. I think Yxeli would be happier if she would capitalize the personal pronoun 'I'. And there's a puzzle. Yxeli is in Ireland, so I understand. The film school is in Beaconsfield. How did she just happen to pop into the school for a chat?

to get you to the second hexagram thats why...the more lines the more prominent the significance of the second hexagram in the cast. Its hardly a doctrine, more of an observation some make. You don't have to do either/or, ie ignore the lines to get the overview...you can do lines and over view together

You spoke about treading...but not the background, the most most important contextual factor , hex 27, sustenance, money or the lack thereof. Seems to me the treading, the carefulness may be more to do with financial issues than anything else.

I guess I'd read it as you could just about manage film school financially with care...with focus (10.2)and maybe a few kind of lucky breaks or unusual moves (10.5), and dose of daring (10.4) ?

I mean if you were offered a place the 27 issues about survival are the fundamental crux of the matter about whether you can go or not aren't they.

Getting in isn't the issue its affording to be able to do it isn't it ? Unless you are already rich and don't need to consider that

I'd say the reading called for boldness not sadness.....but i think half of that Tiger may be how to keep afloat materially, but you can do it. Thats what the reading says IMO

Aw Thanks for putting so much time into it Pocossin, I believe you. You've been accurate about my readings before and I do give you alot of respect for your wisdom. I just have a thing when people dont quote specific lines in their answers (like willowfox did) I wonder where its coming from. But Big Respec! :)

Lucia- Thanks for that. Yeah I would hope that in the end when all the bitching and backstabbings done in this industry that i might be recognised-- So many people graduate from courses like these here every year the next hungry generation is vieing for a piece of the pie! not that thats a bad thing its necessary for growth but wow do most of them ever climb that ladder in the most cruel way! :)

All in all You'r right in that all moving lines appearing in the consult must have a meaning. Somehow I find it confusing, as mentioned, to deal with two diamentralical opposite pictures in one consultation.

Svenrus Yea I know the feeling- and i'm really a beginner too! but i like to think that when taking in all of these seeming polar opposite meanings a thread forms in your mind for an answer. Sometime i will read all the lines but only one line really speaks to me, and in that case i understand about discarding many changing lines and following the advice of one, But i've noticed that often they dont correlate with any 'rules' set out by other diviners. Its a very personal interpretation and its all playing by ear as they say i think.

I'm seeing this as the crux of Yi's answer to you: either learn to tread with the tigers (swim with the sharks) or prepare to compromise your abilities for a supposedly easier but less potentially lucrative path. Thanks Sooo. Yeah very true about the small pond. and yeah, you have to be able to compromise certain aspects of yourself to get along in this world, i suppose its up to me how much of that i need to take on though. I'm quite the fundamentalist when it comes to respectful behaviour! ;)

Yxeli is in Ireland, so I understand. The film school is in Beaconsfield. How did she just happen to pop into the school for a chat?

wow where did you get beaconsfield from? The 'national' film school is obviously for my 'nation'! haha :) Irelands national film school is based in Dun laoighre, Ireland.

Lucia mentioned "the National Film and Television School", and you didn't say otherwise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_and_Television_School

But your school is apparently this one:

http://www.iftn.ie/training/AcademicCourses/?act1=record&aid=22&rid=8&only=1

There's to be another film school in Cork:

This is just to add a little more info about locations of people via internet..One thing you need to be careful of is that IP addresses are not always accurate to the location.

For instance.. My IP address once said that I was in the San Diego area because, I got my computer used from my Dad's wife's Dad, who passed away. My IP address had stayed that way for a few years even 600 or so miles away up in the northern part of the state. Now its changed do to my local internet company. which says now my IP address is in Chico(because that is the main headquarters for this region) however thats not accurate either, because I'm an hour away from Chico.
