A few weeks ago I dreamt I found cash in a trash receptacle near a sidewalk on the street (Sunset Blvd, in Los Angeles). Some singles, fives, a couple tens and twenties. I gathered them up with people around, none of whom were aware of the cash; for that matter, they were barely aware of me.

Similar dynamic in a dream this morning, finding bills (many, and including twenties, fifties and a couple hundreds - a lot, and lot more than in the first dream) in, well, a "well" of sorts, the sort of area near a sidewalk that is cordoned off by a low barrier, maybe bricks (as in this case); the sort of spot where trash accumulates, and where rats might do well in search of scraps. I may not be describing it so well but you'll find these spots in any and every urban area.

And as I gathered these bills in the latest dream I overheard a woman's voice - as if through a megaphone - announcing a demonstration that was soon to commence.

And so I asked, what are these dreams about finding cash in these trashy areas about, and received, of course, 48, The Well.

This from Hilary, in regards to 48, resonated:

"This reminds me of those myths where the hero must visit dark depths to bring back the gift of life."

(I'd readily substitute Joe or Jolene Schmoe for "hero" and things of value for "gift of life," but the point is clear.)

Any thoughts are as always welcome and appreciated.

What are these dreams about finding cash in these trashy areas about?
48 unchanging

Your work is your well, the source from which you draw your sustenance. You feel that it is beneath you, but are rewarded by it. The Image says,

. . . the superior man encourages the people at their work, and exhorts them to help one another.

This suggests that you would by happier in your work if you were more involved with colleagues. Could you give demonstrations or workshops on your discipline?

this notion of increased involvement with others has come up lately and it's been a little baffling.

sometimes, pocossin, it has seemed and felt during conversations i've had with strangers - "unusual" circumstances that have "just popped up" - that the dialogue, in these cases ABOUT one's work being one's well, have been something like workshops/demonstrations that get directly to what you're talking about; namely, the encouraging people at their work aspect, and how it relates directly to one's Well.

thank you, as always.

Descensus ad Inferos

Hooo, you write for a living, I think. You may be interested in my interpretation of Walden's "Former Inhabitants and Winter Visitors," posted to Waldenlist five years ago. I have since had heart damage and memory problems (indeed, I forgot I wrote it, but your comments evoked it), so don't expect the same quality of work from me in the future :)

A descensus ad inferos interpretation of "Former Inhabitants and
Winter Visitors" accounts for its multiple references to fire and pit
and unifies its seemingly disparate parts into a single collage.

Firewater victimizes Breed and Quoil. Wyman would have had a kiln to
fire his earthenware. A "pile of whittlings on the hearth" as well
as whittlings from "shingles of thought well dried" are tinder for
new fire.

Snow (the petty details of life) prematurely buries the living unless
released by an Indian spirit guide (Thoreau himself. The incident is
a parody of spiritualism). Cronching of snow (human social chatter)
drives away the owl of wisdom, a bird of darkness and silence.

Bronson is a new spirit of Virgil who guides to an optimistic realm
in contrast to the old-world Inferno of Dante. Note the "Enter ye"
clue:

"I think that he [Bronson Alcott] should keep a caravansary on the
world's highway, where philosophers of all nations might put up, and
on his sign should be printed, "Entertainment for [spiritual] man,
but not for his beast [his lower nature]. Enter ye that have leisure
and a quiet mind, who earnestly seek the right road" (Paragraph 21).

"The right road" occurs between "caravansary" and "a New England
Night's Entertainment," that is, _An Arabian Nights' Entertainments_
(Cramer, p.260). This context makes it a likely allusion to Alsirat
of the Fatiha (first sura of the Koran). Those who go astray fall
from Alsirat into the abyss.

Wow. That's a beaut. Interesting, in the dark places, where rats would be, etc.

Here's my impression. You are ashamed of your best attributes. They are hidden from the light, where others could see them - and see you!

Question now is, what do you do with that, now that you see your treasures from your dream's eye?

it may lend some context to include that My Work (where it is creative writing) tends to explore and attempt to illustrate the lives of people who live closer to the underbelly than to the top of the hill or upper floors of the condo complex. these are the people and lives i find most interesting. as a storyteller, i am more intrigued by how and whether one gets back up (assuming they were ever Up in the first place) after falling/failing than i am in the experiences of people who have never brushed against The Trash, so to speak.

my best attributes have been hard-won (often enough via battles with myself) and i recognize their worth, though they are indeed mostly hidden from view. *36 comes to mind in this regard.

(otoh,my worst attributes have come to my attention in legion these past couple years, in a powerful showing of my Shadow. as astrology comes up here time to time, i correlate this with a particular transit of pluto hitting personal planets, for whatever that's worth. a considerable house-cleaning, for lack of a better phrase.)

thank you, meng. seeing my treasures from my dreams' eye HAS been a grand theme of late as well and helped me to move through and make sense of a lot, to say the least.
