Hello all of you as you may have guessed my name is Andrew. I'm interested in divination but the I Ching is new to me and wanted some help with a reading. The question I asked was "how does xxx relate to my future?" I wrote xxx because I didn't want to write this individuals name, I hope you don't mind. Anyway, the primary hexagram was 61 changing line 5, and the relating hexagram was 41 (no changing lines). I would appreciate any help whatsoever. By the way, when I say new, I mean really new as in this week, and would appreciate help on how to learn and use the I ching as well, please?

Hi Andrew,

This site has many wonderful pages to help you learn. I find the Contents page is very well organized, and it will not only show you what is available here, but help you to see how each part of what you're learning fits into the larger picture.

As to your question, it seems the general idea is that xxx relates to your future by helping to bring out the 'inner truth' of yourself. That changing line at 5 indicates that the surest foundation of a successful relationship is the natural effect of knowing oneself deeply upon others - their sensing that you come from a comfortable and self-aware inner place causes them to naturally be more willing to connect with you. Part of the emphasis in #41 is on how the wealth you find within yourself can be given to the world.

That's just a tiny little start, but there will be others along to help too - stay tuned!

Hi and welcome, Andrew!

Word I hear is that there's I Ching lessons soon to be offered here on Clarity. Its something which might interest you. Hilary will be announcing when the course is ready to roll out.

While our interest in consulting I Ching is often pointed at our future, Ching tends to speak into our present. In other words, what part do I play in the development with xxx. This usually begins with an examination of our own self.

As Willow stated, this is about finding and acting from your own inner truth. This isn't to be limited to your own opinion, but the truth which is inherent in all things, a universal truth contained within yourself. The one you need to find in there is your "ruler." This is one within yourself who can be counted on to make just and fair judgments concerning your question. This is a time to have a discussion with this ruler in order to make your decisions (judgment) fair and just.

Before you can accurately judge xxx, you must gain an objective view of your situation, not a subjective one. Inner truth and that leader within yourself will rightly discern the proper course of action. According to your change line, you will succeed in finding this ruler, an auspicious thing. According to this, you've definitely found the right place (or will find) to make your judgments from and you can trust them.

41 Decrease is your relating hexagram. Decrease doesn't mean something deficient in yourself. Quite the contrary. It means that you have something to give or you wouldn't have anything to decrease. Increase and decrease come in their own time. The important thing here is not to cover up your humble circumstances with empty pretense. Often, its this emptying that brings out the inner truth in us. Even with simplicity, the sentiments of your heart can be expressed. This may feel a bit humiliating, but if you offer just a couple of small sacrifices, (no, not cows, pigs or chickens. More like a softening of your defenses or a letting go of your pride.) your inner truth will shine and have a positive influence on xxx. (and probably everyone else who witnesses, both, your sacrifice and your inner truth) This produces an invisible influence which at the time, you may not even be aware of.

Its appears: how xxx relates to your future depends upon the leadership, and that depends upon the power of your inner truth.

BTW, you could have picked a simpler one to understand for your first reading!

Thankyou both very much for your help, I never knew so much could be interpreted from a reading, it's certainly very deep. I think I understand all that, I should look within myself to find out who I really am... and then make judgment depending on what I find. I can understand the need to make sacrifices as well, ie lowering my defences, so that people see who I really am, which in turn might make it easier for me to do the same. Thanks guys

Way to go, Andrew! Just by the fact that you are open to receive an answer, demonstrates that you are open to the power of inner truth. This demonstrated decrease means that you are willing to empty yourself. A bowl's usefulness is contained in its emptiness. This is difficult because it requires first, the emptying of our trash (chuckles.. sorry to be so blunt) so that we can be available to be filled with something fresh and new.

Is a glass the happiest when its full or empty? If I were the glass, I'd answer: When I'm in use, that's when I most feel like a glass. That's the glass's Tao - inner truth.

You are like the glass and have your own usefulness in this life. Being true to what you are is what really matters. Being content when empty and being used when full, is the ebb and flow of nature.

What the I Ching does is: emulate nature's images, thereby, giving us a pattern to observe. In observing nature, we observe our self. When we are able to correctly identify nature's ways, we are able to know our self.

I'm not a big Nietzsche fan, but the man had insight:

When one speaks of humanity, the idea is fundamental that this is something which separates and distinguishes man from nature. In reality, however, there is no such separation: "natural" qualities and those called truly "human" are inseparably grown together. Man, in his highest and noblest capacities, is wholly nature and embodies its uncanny dual character. Those of his abilities which are terrifying and considered inhuman may even be the fertile soil out of which alone all humanity can grow in impulse, deed, and work.
~ Nietzsche

Be exactly who you are, Andrew. Be neither ashamed nor proud. Just be.

I hope you stick around Clarity and contribute your own thoughts, as well as continue to learn along with the rest of us.

Hi Andrew,

I hope I'm not too late with this - call it a postscript to the other readings you've received, with a bit more on Hexagram 41.

First... Candid, thanks for mentioning the I Ching courses, but where have you been?

. Free and paid I Ching courses are available from here (and have been for the last month!)

About 61 changing to 41, and the future path with xxx...

Starting with the obvious, this is a strongly positive reading for a relationship. Just read the moving line (the most specific, immediate part of any reading) - sincere and confident, connecting like clasped hands. There is no mistake here.

Often when the Yi (=I Ching) says there's 'no mistake' it is answering an unspoken doubt in the questioner. All the more so where Hexagram 41 is concerned. Hexagram 41 does imply giving something up, reducing something. It is a very low-key, simple offering, not a grand gesture, but you can feel you're making it.

It is good to have a strong purpose behind this - good to come from your own source in what you do here. This is naturally a time when you want to ask questions - most often 'why am I doing this, why should I let this go?' The answer is that it raises you to a higher level altogether - you let go everything that is not essential, lightening the load, checking negative emotions so that you are kept away from harm...

Hope this helps! and I join with Candid in hoping you stick around

Thankyou very much Hillary, and it definetely helps! It's very unusual how the I ching seems to be able to read minds, even when something relating to the main question isn't asked such as doubt. If I was told this would happen to me last week I'd probably say "Yeah, er, alright"

Thanks for the link as well by the way!
