Hello,

I am new here and new to the I Ching. I received it as a gift and have only done a few readings but the results have been very clear and relevant to me so far. However, I have come to a time of major decision and decided to consult the I Ching, and I unfortunately asked a rather complicated question - and therefore got a complicated answer. I could really use some help because some of the advice seems contradictory and I need to know where in the timeline I am so to speak!

I understand that I am really the only one that can really interpret my own answers but some help with the rules about the moving lines would help.

I actually asked 2 questions, here is a summary of the questions and the answers.

Q #1: I wrote a 2 page document explaining my fiance and I's goals in life and how we thought we would get there, and how we don't feel we are making progress. I wrote about how we recently moved to a new place hoping to change careers, but didn't get the jobs we wanted, and now feel lonely in the new place and no further ahead in our goals. We are thinking of moving back to where we lived for the last 5 years, where we know we can get better-paying jobs, to help pay off student loans and save for a house. The move would be acorss a border and 3000 miles, just to clarify it is no small decision.

Unfortunately my mind was in such a whirl when I attempted this reading, I didn't clarify the question to myself. I planned to ask if we should move back to the previous place, but I think I ended up asking more about whether our goals would work at all or if we should just give up on them. I know I should ask a clearer question.

Answer:

Kua 1 was #64 Wei Chi with lines 1,3 and 5 moving.
Kua 2 was #1 Ch'ien.

I thought this means that maybe we acted too soon by moving here and trying to jump ahead to our goals, and that if we persist we will succeed and be happy.

But does the I Ching say anything about the past? Is this advice about the future - saying no we should not give up too soon and move back to our old jobs but rather persist in what we are doing?

Q #2 I decided I had muddled the first question too much by writing too much (but I felt it was necessary for myself - to clarify thing) and I asked specifically "Will moving back to ____ help us reach our goals and be happy and enjoy life while we work towards them?"

Answer:

Kua 1 was #5 HSU with lines 4 and 6 moving.
Kua 2 was again #1 Ch'ein.

This reading was very alarming to me because it indicates "great danger". The problem is that the kua says to "wait until the time of danger is past" and "it will be of great benefit to begin a major journey when the time of waiting is past" which seems to indicate don't move yet.

but line 4 indiactes "the time of danger is here - immediate action is called for". Line 6 indicates "the time for waiting is past, the danger is extreme, there is little hope.... help comes from an unexpected quarter, 3 helpers will arrive" etc.

I do not understand which lines indicate the present action I should take. In this context, asking whether we should move, what would you say I am being told? Is it saying it would be dangerous to move now and I should wait? Or is it saying move immediately because danger is near? Or should I be waiting for these helpers?

Both readings mention "extricate oneself from the situation/danger"

Thanks for any advice or insight you can offer.

Hi Tina

Just in case the comment could be useful

Yi Jing has it's own order. In this case, question 1 is pointing to the General Diagnosis of your situation (your situation= you and your partner). And second question pointed to the concrete situation on moving back.

Fist: General situation
64 is a New Begining. You are in the middle of a Time for new beginings, leave past in the past and get ready to cross the great river (it means, face a new live, a new future)
This time started around June 16 of 2005; and will end until February 1st of 2006
In this particular answer, each line is a 37 days period. So, lines 1 and 3 are in the past (line 1, first you had find some humilliation; line 3 you hadn't find enough energy to complet your goals, you needed to find helpers).

The most important thing: line 5 is in the present. It means, NOW is the time to let your light shine, is the time to achieve success with perseverance and activity.

Second question: is wise to follow the impulse to go back?
The impulse to going back is a sign of desperation, the Noble don't act guided to desperation, so the Noble wait until desperation leave.
Line 4: if you are in the fose, any movement leads to danger, better to be quiet
Line 6: if you wait in the fose, with inner calm, you'll find unexpected helpers and avoid danger.

So, don't go back beacuse of desperation; stay calm and fortune will arrieve.

Best wishes

ps. to avoid misunderstandings

I'm not saying that you must no go back ever; is not about the conclussion but about the way to arrive to conclussion.

Don take any decission because of desperation. Recover yur inner calm before

Thank you, this is very helpful. For the past few days I have felt sick to my stomach with indecision and I know I can't make any big decision when feeling like this. It is hard because I think my fiance wants to go back more than I do, and I want him to be happy too.

It helps to know more about the lines, because I didn't know if they were telling me the danger was to stay here and be isolated and stagnate, or if the danger was desperation, giving up.

I am still not 100% certain but now I can meditate on what you have added.

Hi Tina line 4 of hexagram 5 which refers to waiting in bloodied cave, danger etc, often refers not to literal danger but to the dark and worried place in your mind. It is advising you NOT to worry yourself sick, because if you just hang on other 'helpers' which may be opportunities will come up. So I agree with Jesed, stay calm and centred and all will be well.

Also I agree with him in interpretation of 64, lines 1,3 and 5. Hang on in there I think it says, things are still coming together, and its quite a positive reading I think.

(sorry Jesed what did the word 'fose' mean ? is it pit ?

Hi Void,

Yes I agree the danger is not literal (to my life), I interpreted the danger to either mean:

1. the lack of progress towards goals (danger to the goals) and/or despair from isolation, lack of progress, or stagnation. This would mean that the eventual action is to move back, once things are in order (helpers arrive?) because we jumped too soon and need to wait longer before beginning our plans (to buy a farm is one of my goals - we can't afford it yet!)

or

2. The danger of giving up too soon and turning back too soon. (which is maybe what we did when we moved here in June).

Of course those are 2 very different interpretations.

The indecision comes from not knowing if we moved at the right time - before we had jobs here for sure and before we had saved enough money to pay off debts. I really wish I'd consulted the I Ching before we moved here in the first place!

I have certainly not felt this upset in a very long time, I thought I'd gained a pretty good sense of inner calm. But the thought that we acted too soon and made the wrong choices has been eating me up. I need to look forward and see how we can fix things - in a positive way. Whether that means moving back or staying here I am still not sure, but at least I need to focus and be calm.

I did feel very good after doing the readings at first, because the it seems to indicate in the end all will be well and maybe even better than we imagined. But after I started to try and get a clear answer about the moving thing, I got all mixed up.

Hi Void
You are right; I wanted to write something like a cave

Hi Tina
From the first answer. Seems that you acted too soon, yes. But that is in the past (so, leave it in the past). Now, in present, you have a chance to work it out. Just be aware that clarity and determination is needed.

From second answer, line 4. Image: you are like someone hidding in a cave, while the enemy's army is coming closer. If you do any movement now, you will be notice by the enemy.. and you'll get kill. Best to be still, quiet, until the army pass.
Even if one had made a wrong choice, reacts with desperation make things worst.

Yi Jing has an order... answer 2 must be interpretated at the light of answer 1... and question 3 must be phrase at the light of answers 1-2.
One posible good question 3: What must we do in this New Time in order to achieve our goals?
(of course, I'm sure you can phrase this question better than my poor English can)
The point is a) I now we are in the begining of a new time (aswer 1) and we must no follow desperated impulses to go back (answer); what should we do, then? Something like that

Best wishes
