Hello this is my first post here. I have read many and enjoyed reading the responses and becoming familiar with I chang...

I asked: 1) What can i do to improve my life? received 23

I understand that 23 unchanging means to abandon or leave something behind or split apart.

Then asked: 2) What is it that I need to Strip/leave behind in my life? 36.1.3>2
36 meaning to keep my head down and not showing my feeling

36.1
"Brightness hidden, flying away,
His wings hanging down.
The noble one is on the move,
For three days, eats nothing,
Has a direction to go.
Those in authority have something to say."
****** meaning: Sad, drooping wings but can reach a state of mental peace and has a direction to go

36.3
"Brightness hidden, hunting in the south.
Gets their great leader.
Afflicted constancy is not possible."
******* being hurt by someone & things will not happen.

Im not clear as to what the advice is....
1) Should I stop hiding my brightness while moving forward with my life
2) not sure what I'm suppose to be removing...

Hi Nettyc1,

I'm going to ask the moderators to move this thread from the Open Space forum to Shared Readings. It might be seen by more people there.

About your reading...so far I'm stuck where you are! I agree with you that 23 unchanging probably means that there's someone, something, or maybe something internal to you that should be stripped away.

Asking "what is that" seems like a perfectly reasonable follow-up question to me, but I have no idea what the 36.1.3 > 2 reading might be telling you.

Maybe someone else will answer, but another suggestion might be that you try the Hexagram Search feature to see what people have said about that reading or those lines in the past.

Hexagram Search is found under the Search menu at the very top of the screen. Click on "Search," then select Hexagram Search from the dropdown list.

2) not sure what I'm suppose to be removing...

Things that wound you perhaps. Lisa is right this will get more attention if moved to SR. A quick way to get it moved is to use the report button

It sounds like you are or have been struggling against some kind of darkness in 36.1 . In 36.3 you actually have recognised the very source of the trouble yet it almost seems to make no difference yet. It's like being able to see what is wrong and able to see clearly how to rectify and yet it can seem you are getting nowhere which can be depressing. Yet the 'chief' is captured, you are on the way to being rid of upsetting or harmful influences but there are many surrounding issues that it will take time to clear up so you need to be patient.

So to improve your life there appears to be conditions, whether environmental, social, romantic or work, somewhere in your life that need to go. To improve your life there are things you need to lose. Not always easy but the 36.1.3>2 looks like it's half way there.

I agree with Lisa and Trojina, something in your life is hindering your progress and you need to remove it.

I see 36.1 as an attempt to do something rather radical, unorthodox. The majority of people surrounding you will think you are at least strange or just crazy for doing so [e.g. going vegan or fruit-only, doing meditation after lunch in the office, saying no to alcohol .. you get the drift, separation from common behaviour]. Stay true to your idea but go slowly, 36.3 also points at this.

Transitional hex is 15.3 - also saying slow and steady wins the race.

Not sure where to find the report button...

Thank you very much for all your help....

asked What Radical changes could I make? Response 35.3>56....
Im guessing I'm the wander and that i will overcome the situation...To be true to myself and seize opportunities and still fit in but uncertain as to the meaning of
A noble one is clear and thoughtful in administering punishments, and doesn’t draw out legal proceedings.’

The moderators have already moved the thread, so you don't have to report it. For future reference, though, the report button is in the gray-shaded bar below each post, probably towards the left hand side. (The right hand side of the same bar contains the reply, reply with quote, and multi-quote buttons.)

35.3 (quoted from Hilary's book; as you probably know from reading, Hilary Barrett is an I Ching diviner and the owner of this website):

'All have confidence. Regrets vanish.'

There's something you have to have confidence in? Your regrets about whatever seems wrong will vanish? I don't know what it's referring to, but it does seem to have the sort of optimistic tone Trojina saw in the original reading, that you're already on your way to fixing things.

If there's something you've already started doing - maybe something you're not yet connecting with these readings? - it seems you are making progress with it (hexagram 35 is about progress and advancing).

One thing hexagram 35 is about, in general, is making good use of a gift:

Oracle
'Advancing,
Prince Kang used a gift of horses to breed a multitude.
In the course of a day, he mated them three times.'

Have you received any literal or metaphorical gifts? Are you using them to their full potential, or trying to find the potential in something? Maybe that's what you have to have confidence in - that there is potential in this gift, whatever it is.

56, the relating hexagram, is about travelling, wandering, sojourning, passing through temporarily. That might be figurative/metaphorical, unless, of course, you happen actually to be travelling in real life, or living somewhere temporarily, something like that.

35.3 → 56 (Journeying), Legge:
Shows its subject trusted by all (around him).
All occasion for repentance will disappear.

Yi seems to be pointing to the same thing [as in 36.1] - trust from other people, your confidence is based too much on other peoples opinion.
Is that so?
Do you need to feel the support of others to advance?

Thank you again, Not sure what the gift is that I have been given at this time but I guess i will figure it out... As for support, not sure. The desire is to move south but currently work & live up north. Family against me moving south since they are seniors and I have to work north to maintain future living quarters down south for retirement. The whole thing is draining. Wanting to be there to have my own life and having to live here because of responsibilities for my self and to others. So sort of stuck & desiring an honest relationship. Difficult to make a clear decision on anything at this point. Just feels like motions but not movement in any direction at all.
Asked the same question today and received: 16:1.4.6>27 Which, I believe isn't very promising seeking enthusiasm for nourishment.

36.3 → 24 (Returning), Richmond:
The light is darkened during a hunt to the south.
The rebel leader is captured. Excess should be avoided.

Now it is becoming very clear: it is about moving south, it is about splitting apart from your parents.
Don't wait for their approval - it's your life. There should be a limit of how much you can give to others.

41.6 → 19 (Approaching), Legge:
Shows its subject giving increase to others without taking from himself.
There will be no error.
With firm correctness there will be good fortune.
There will be advantage in every movement that shall be made.
He will find ministers more than can be counted by their clans.

36.3 Does warn to do it gradually though.

[Edited to add: just saw Ashteroid's post. If everyone always agreed Hilary could close the forum...that would be no fun...;)]

I was pretty confused by these readings, but your last reading may have cleared it all up (at least the way I'm seeing it...)

(You asked which same question, by the way?)

I agree with your interpretation - it doesn't seem very promising.

16:1.4.6 > 27

16.1
‘Enthusiasm calling out,
Pitfall.’

16.4
‘Source of enthusiasm.
Great possessions gained.
Do not doubt.
Partners are gathered together as a hair clasp gathers hair.’

16.6
‘Enthusiasm in the dark.
Results bring a change of heart,
No mistake.’

I think your enthusiasm here is your desire to get away. What does the reading say about that? I think 16.1 and 16.6 are about one aspect, and 16.4 is about another.

16.1 - moving away is definitely "calling" to you. But the line says "pitfall." Wilhelm's translation says:

"Enthusiasm that expresses itself
Brings misfortune."

"Expresses itself" might mean "acting upon." Acting upon your enthusiasm will bring misfortune (I think it means).

16.6, Wilhelm:
"Deluded enthusiasm.
But if after completion one changes,
There is no blame."

That word "deluded"...pretty rude, but I think it's making a point. Here is Wilhelm's entire commentary:

"It is a bad thing for a man to let himself be deluded by enthusiasm. But if this delusion has run its course, and he is still capable of changing, then he is freed of error. A sober awakening from false enthusiasm is quite possible and very favorable."

See how Wilhelm explains what he means by "if after completion one changes"? "But if this delusion has run its course, and he" [you] "is still capable of changing... ." Yi might be telling you that your desire to move away will run its course. Remember the "regrets vanish" from 35.3?

16.4 - I think this line is from a whole other point of view. When there are several moving lines, they're not always from the same point of view. That's (er) sometimes the whole point. In this case, I think it's likely that 16.1 and 16.6 are each saying similar things (i.e. "be careful," or simply "don't"). 16.4 might be saying something like, "I (Yi) have advised caution, and warned against pitfall and ill-conceived enthusiasm (lines 1 and 6). So if you heed that - 16.4 will result."
