Hex 22.6 to 6 The end of life or death of vanity?

How would my illness may interfere with my ability to function at work?

I’ve always been a highly self-motivated individual (even through illness). However, days like today, make me feel like if I plan to go back to work I would be setting myself up for failure (realistically speaking).

But I am certain the best way to find contentment is to lose myself in the service of others. I really want to go back out there. I wonder how much of my symptoms have to do with somatization.

How should I interpret Hex 22.6?
… connected with the end of life and death… it could signify literal death and also the death of vanity, those vain illusions about ourselves ... Top line moving in 22 does come right before 23 after all ...
Just want to be realistic.

Please help

How should I interpret Hex 22.6?

Hexagram 22 Grace / Image / personality

In the context of your question I don't see death or vanity here. I think the I Ching is saying that simplicity is required here. There's no need for unnecessary complications either in the outside world or in the monkey mind. If you are very driven and centered in your mind, then circular thoughts can go around and around and around. We use up enormous amounts of energy that way.

H.6 Conflict is the background producing that desire to DO. You know, if wish to be of service to others, the Yi might be saying you already have that essence within you, the effects of which express themselves in ways unseen. Some rendering of line 6 I recall, states: "We don't need to ornament a rose." So, perhaps being of service "out there" isn't necessarily important at this time? If we have that intent within us it generally finds an outlet when the time is right.

It's also not saying to avoid it. It's a gentle response to your query requiring some further contemplation perhaps. I also like LiSe's take: "Value announces itself plain. It is easier to find truth, love or peace where things are simple. Lots of decoration is usually a sign of little essence."

There is beauty and symmetry in your situation although it may not feel like it. So, whatever you decide to do regarding work, the reading suggests to keep it simple, cultivate grace under pressure and - recalling your illness - don't exceed sensible limits.

22.6 changes to 36. It suggests you still can share your energy/service with others, but take care of your fire too.

Yup. Missed that. 22.6>36 not 6. "Hiding the light."

Dear Topal,
You’re so right! I have been complicating myself going around and around and around… changing and “ornamenting “my résumé and I see the “little essence”; and the suggestion to keep it simple, not exceeding sensible limits. I like the sound of “beauty and symmetry” (I learned this concept in Fine Arts) in my situation, for it has revealed the true fitness and condition of my soul. :bows:

It is good to know that I can still share my energy. For the longest time I’ve been refraining from going back to work because I wonder how I’d do from one day to the next, but the reality is that I feel energetic more days than not and I am certain that doing this would be really helpful to "take care of my fire."
Thanks :)

Hi Hilary, I appreciate your moderatorly intervention. However, with all due respect, I find Sooo’s interpretation to be thoroughly accurate, honest, and direct to the point. I am glad I was able to read his response before being removed. His words reminded me of Deepak Tenginkai, “Life becomes beautiful, if we reach to the state of ‘few words, deep meaning’, and reaching to this state becomes possible only and only through sincere self-exploration. All other activities and no activities follows this sincere self-exploration.”

Sooo’s expression:
[ “I always cringe when I hear someone say ‘my illness’,…making it part of who you are…,”]
sounds quite literally like the expressions I have used myself a million times when analyzing “others” who, I thought, had limited themselves by embracing a “victim’s identity.” I think is time to analyze myself.

I find his response has much to do with my query:
[“It's important to know that one of the meanings of 22 has to do with health, as fire below is ones chi/qi/life force, energy, flowering, showing forth above. Line 6 is pure, uncolored, without anything adorning, including adorning oneself with an illness by calling it mine, as though it is a dark veil you must wear… Everyone will die; it's a fact of life. Let it come when it's time. Meanwhile live in the fullness of life.”]

From my point of view, his interpretation is not arrogant, not condescending, but truly confident in the best possible way. The first and most important thing I learned was "Identity," I am re-energized, and I am truly grateful for this.

If you find this inappropriate, of course I’ll respect that, but I personally did not find his words inflammatory disrespectful but truthfully honest like those of a true friend.:bows:

Hi Claroscuro,

Thank you for this. Just to say, I didn't delete Sooo's original post, the one with the reading in - he was the one who deleted that. (I deleted the ones that didn't mention the reading.)

Hi Sooo,

Just wondering why did you delete your original post?:(

Long story, long history, Claroscuro. In short, accusations received in PM caused me to wonder if in my attempt to help I had insulted you, and that's the last thing I wanted to do. After reading your post, which I'm grateful for, and which have earned my deep respect, I realize that you are bigger than that, much bigger.

I've sent a PM with my email. I'd like to be that friend.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your message.
I wish you hadn’t deleted your post because I thought it could be helpful for others who may possibly welcome your answer like I did; but I do understand that not many people can appreciate the value of a candid response.

I did not find you insensitive or insulting; quite contraire, everything you said was insightful and right on target regardless of any stage of life I might be experiencing.

I hope that you never lose your candor:cool:

PS I'd also like you to be my friend:flirt:

hello ciaroscuro,
although this is an old thread, here's a bit more from my side as well. For a long time I've tried (and, sometimes, fought) hard to understand hexagram 22 when received for serious matters, especially medical ones . . For me it has come to show a state of claiming all and any power and strength one can achieve in circumstances that definitely override our powers and strengths . . even a little goes a long way then, in a curious 'less is more' way.

If you think about it, your name here also gives a mental image of this reading of yours: as in the painterly technique of chiaroscuro, in the midst of darkness the slightest lights shine bright.

take care!

Hello Rodaki,

Wow! This makes a lot of sense.

Maybe 22 is a roam resonance of:
[“Gods suppressed become devils, and often it is these devils whom we first encounter when we turn inward.”]
“…Is this tangling and short-circuiting of the symbolic imagery through which the conscious and unconscious systems of our minds were to have been held in touch” J. Campbell

This chiaroscuro notion became a strong influence in my work; the pathway that still remains the motivating energy behind my lifelong passion. This technique sets the mood in itself. One way to remove any spillage of unwanted light sources is to turn the work area pitch dark light at varying angles and heights. Each of these invoke different emotions - dramatic, lonely, ominous, solitary, mysterious… It infuses new life on the canvas through rich, dark shadows that give way to a soft play of light and similes, everyday and often forgotten, though sometimes fragile and fleeting like the drooping flowers it does not remain an unspoken emotion, but instead it’s a reminder of how precious time is. A moment preserved forever.

Take care!

Shade and light dance to each movement of time.
Nothing ever happens twice the same.
There are no natural increments of motion unless halted;
then neither time nor motion exist - preserved as a museum dinosaur.
Only unmeasured and uninterrupted movement is natural.

Only moments ago I saw the moon above the mountain.
Moments later it sat like a shining cat on a fence.
Now it hides in my neighbor's yard.

To capture a moment is art,
though it's easy to understand why primitive people treat it as dark magic, supernatural.
Music can not be still.

ha! ciaroscuro you got me there with your comment on the Campbell quote ;) . . and I loved how you described the effects of 'working in the dark'

This technique sets the mood in itself

22 can be very much about technique too
