This reading has already met its outcome, I am sharing just out of sheer amazement to the Ys response. I cant really make any link between 24 unchanging and what actually happened, maybe u could suggest something?

I entered a theatre-game where we have to improvise according to topics that are drawn from the audience in the very moment, so I have no way to prepare. It was a light-hearted experience, I was not so much concerned with my performance, but out of curiosity I asked before-hand:

"To which random topic will I have to improvise on?" and got 24 unchanging.

Through the day I had my head exploding with associations and possible arguments and movements to use in case some of my interpretations met the topic, but it turned out to be something completely out-there. A guy in the audience said "cigarettes", and I had to improvise on that...

It went ok, I had fun, but I cant really figure out what the Y could have meant with 24 here...

what do u think?

"Returning to the path, returning in seven days..."

Cigarettes are highly addictive and despite one's best efforts, the urge to return to them can be overwhelming. I quit smoking over 15 years ago, but just thinking and writing about them makes me want to light up...

hehe . . I find this a very whimsical reading, I think the IChing is teasing you :)

see, in 24 it reads:

RETURN. Success.
Going out and coming in without error.
Friends come without blame.
To and fro goes the way.
On the seventh day comes return.
It furthers one to have somewhere to go
.
( . .)
groups come together in full public knowledge and are in harmony with the time, all selfish separatist tendencies are excluded, and no mistake is made. The idea of RETURN is based on the course of nature. The movement is cyclic, and the course completes itself. Therefore it is not necessary to hasten anything artificially. Everything comes of itself at the appointed time.

the passes close (within the enclosed space of theater)
friends come without blame (there's no fear of attack or harm)
to and fro goes the way (questions and answers are exchanged with ease)
not necessary to hasten anything (don't try to pre-conceive the requests you'll get)
Everything comes at the right time (when someone offers an idea, you will know)

24:
. . you'll improvise on people's response . .
what kind of improvisation would it be if you got the answer beforehand??

:bag:

I agree with rodaki.

Anyway, just to remain light-hearted...
The bottom of the hexagram is where lines enter, exiting at the top.
So, if you have to match a cigarette to it, you have to imagine it with fire at the bottom.
And it matches quite well, since fire is the only yang thing, all the tobacco is represented by the yin lines and is the "way" that the fire naturally goes (fire consumes the cigarette like the yang lines tend to grow up).
And if you turn hex 24 upside-down, you'll end with... a totally consumed cigarette ;)

Ok, it was impossible to guess beforehand... Yi has a smart way of teasing us! :D

I completely agree... Perhaps I shouldnt have done the reading in the first place, but I am often doing readings that I dont REALLY wanna know, because I also want to practice. I do readings about mundane events that I only have to wait a couple of hours to start translating "how the Y talks". Overall its useful, im more familiar with the lines and hexagrams and how they can play out in real-life situations. But once in a while, like this time, the ball gets thrown completely off field, and I dont have a clue.

I also believe one would not get to "cigarettes" given 24 unchanging...

But as this was my question, it is also interesting to see how the Y can react to light-hearted attitudes, or questions one shouldnt be asking...

Anyway, behind all this there lies a real doubt of mine: when can one take a reading directly and aply it to the given situation, and when do u know it is like a meta-answer, a answer that questions the motivation of the question...?

Hum

A very good question. Sometimes the answer sits up and barks at you, and there's no doubt. More often, there's a level (or several levels) of meta-answer behind a response. Assuming you entered into a casting with an appropriately serious intent, the more obtuse the answer is, the greater the degree of "meta-".

That being said, IC has given me some quite hilarious responses to foolish questions, and scorched me when I've persisted in ego-driven pursuits.

The association I make with your incident and h24 is that creativity (in this case your ability to improvise on a theme), represented by the firm creative line, enters from the bottom, while the rest of the lines above it are open and yielding. From the strong line at the bottom comes a theme; in this case it was cigarettes. The way is unobstructed, friends (your wits) are free to come and go without obstruction.

I improv with musical phrases and expressed emotions, and I can't do that when my mind is full of worldly concerns. I must first find a way to return to my core, where that strong, creative line sprouts upward from the bottom, and there's zero impedance above.

I think 24 is the perfect starting position for anything creative; all that energy (thunder) and potential stirring below the earth's surface.

There's other associations that can go with that, such as: the note which comes out from the mechanical speaker begins in your own body. But first we have to get to it, or return to it.

And (I think) a funny association is, how various forms of resistance (refinement, customization, originality) define your creation. Then consider impedance in a literal sense: "A material's opposition to the flow of electric current; measured in ohms." Energy measured in ommmmms, lol. But in 24, there is zero impedance, no restriction (no ohms) to the way ahead.

Another, much leaner, interpretation could be: "What's the bottom line to cigarettes?"

That goes into your personal realm regarding your relation to cigarettes, the why and wherefores?

I think thunder/creativity involves risk to go outside the boxes and categories and genres, to where ones own potential is brewing, ones own dragon stirring.
