Hello all,

Does anybody have experience with hex 3.1.6 to 20? To me it seems contradictory...but since I'm a newbie with the Yi, I can get it wrong...totally wrong ;)

Thank you for your insights :bows:

As I see it line one contains a warning not to get overly hasty at the tender time of a new beginning. Here we are at the very, very, beginning. Hence the cautionary 'hesitation and hindrance' and the counsel to remain persevering.

Line 6 has become isolated in a time when things are still tender at the beginning. It looses its way in the difficulties.

How to interpret these two lines in answer to a question depends in a large part on the question, but in general I would say you are being warned in line six of the upshot if you should try to force things and go against the counsel in line one. Line six has an analogous relationship to line 6 of hexagram 29, the Abysmal. Clearly not in harmony with time of Difficulty At The Beginning.

Hexagram 20 to me seems to suggest that one should pause and take thought, contemplate, keep still. Perhaps as a prescriptive to the line six.(I am thinking about this in reply to guiding counsel for the day, but a different question will bring varying lights.) Indeed the trigram of mountain, Keeping Still is a nuclear or inner trigram of hexagram 3. It is the upper-middle nuclear trigram, formed by lines 3,4,5 of hexagram three.

The crux of the situation in hexagram three is formed by lines 2,3,4, Earth and lines 3,4,5 Mountain. Put them together and you have Splitting Apart as the crux or what must be gone through in a time of Difficulty at the Beginning. I don't think this a time to strive blindly to go ahead. The seed casing has just split apart and the tender shoot makes a fresh peek above the surface. Hence the praise of perseverance in line one.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but you didn't provide the question so I had to talk in general terms. Or maybe you wanted a general discussion. In that case I hope I have filled a bit of the bill.

Best regards,

Hello Ken,

I thank you very much for your help. These days I was asking questions to the Yi (maybe too much ) and I got a little bit confused by the answer. So I tried another question, I thought that might be more precise.

My first question was about my ex. I asked the Yi what will happen if I contact him first ? And I got 46.2 > 15. The Hex.15 puzzled me.....
So I asked one week later, what affect will it have on our relationship if I tell him I miss him (longggg question I know). And I got 3.1.6 >20.

Maybe I shouldn't have asked the second one ! ( I also asked what will happen if I wait for him to contact me ? And I got hex. 12 unchanging). I think the Yi is telling me STOP asking questions

Bye,

When I first started consulting the oracle I asked too many questions and soon it all became watered down and I wasn't even certain I was getting an answer. Now I am very spare in my use of it. Asking too many questions is like seeing too much of a friend.

I suggest for your current situation that you ask something along these lines: Given the present state of affairs between my ex and myself what ought I to be doing about it? This focuses on action you can take in the present. The oracle may tell you to wait or it may say 'full speed ahead'. Sometimes inaction is the best 'action' but you will have to ask oracle.

Dear Magictortoise,

I took your advice and ask the IC. So my question was: Given the situation with my ex, should I initiate contact now?

I received : 57.4.5.6 > 32

I think that with 3 moving lines I can examine the transitional hex. I don't know if I got them right. Is it:
57.4 > 44.5 > 50.6 > 32

Ok so 57.4: the field is open to action. Doubts and sorrows will disappear
44.5 : A wonderful and creative time is coming. Make it one with your own purpose. You can turn the world into imagination.
50.6: This is something truly precious, something that can focus and transform your entire life. The great way is open to you.
32: persevering, succes.

Well, I would interpret that : yes, contact him, be humble, nice and sweet (so me ;) )persevere but don't be too humble or you will loose yourself.

Am I totally wrong? Thank you for any advice/insight/revelation !

You reply at base calls for resolution and decisiveness, no wobbling. The fourth line is quite favorable. Wilhelm appends it with 'This is meritorious.' The fifth line would counsel care and caution after making the decision. Give plenty of thought as to how you will go about approaching the ex and after you have then weigh carefully how the things are going. We don't want to overwhelm here. The sixth line bothers me a little but it seems to be a warning not to penetrate things too deeply, but take it slow and easy, casual.

I like how you worded your question. You asked about timing, as 'would now be the right time'. That is a fine approach since in hexagram 41 in rear text of Wilhelm he states 'all that matters is that things happen at the right time'. So for me it is not so much a matter of should you or shouldn't you initiate contact but whether it is the right time. Peace and don't wobble! ;)

Dear Ken,

Thank you very much for your help. I'll take things slow and casual. And we'll see what happens.

Was I right with the transitional hex or not?

I don't know anything about transitional hexagrams. If I seek more info I look at the internal structures of the main hexagram. The crux of the situation (what must be gone through, also the cross, as what one must bear)is found in the middle nuclear structure : lines 2,3,4,3,4,5. In this case Hexagram 38(3,5,6)-->11. Much emphasis here on opposition and estrangement, but with good counsel in the moving lines. And a happy outlook.

The foundation of the matter lies in the lower nuclear structure : lines 1,2,3,2,3,4. In this instance Hexagram 28, Preponderance of the Great. The situation has arisen through overweighting of yang element.

That for the sake of which all elements in the reply are operating is embodied in the upper nuclear structure which is formed by lines 3,4,5,4,5,6. In this case hexagram 37 The Family with lines 2-6 moving and changing to the Marrying Maiden. A bright prospect for unifying tendencies, though I don't mean to suggest you take hexagram 54 literally.

Other structures to look at are the lower middle nuclear structure which is formed by lines 1,2,3,3,4,5. It represents that by which the forces in hexagram 57 operate. And the upper middle nuclear structure, lines 2,3,4,4,5,6 which represent the form or the 'into which' the forces in 57 take shape. In the former case it is hexagram 50, The Cauldron and in the latter it is hexagram 61, Inner Truth. These two structures are a bit more obscure to understand so I didn't delve into them with regard to your question. You can look at the changing lines as apply to your situation.

These nuclear structures and their meanings are derived basically from Aristotle's doctrine of The Four Causes and were put together by Allan Anderson who taught the I Ching at San Diego State University in the 70's and 80's.

I do not look at the nuclear structures every time I get a reply, but only if I need more info.

this can get complex so I would keep it simple and consider mainly the middle nuclear structure which is the crisis of the situation.

Dear Ken,

I thank you very much for all your replies and explanations. I read the hex you mentioned in your last post. Specially the middle nuclear structure. And it amazed me! This is so true...The whole situation is in Hex38.2.5.6. I just hope that what I'm going to do will bring peace (Hex.11) and good things for us. But I'll see, I can not predicted how my ex boyfriend will react.

I'll contact him soon I think and I already have an idea if what I'm going to say. So, let's hope that my words will touch him and/or make him think about the situation. I'll be humble and sweet (always a good advice), no pressure whatsoever.

A few days ago, I asked the IC what will happen if I contact him and I received hex.40 Deliverance. I think it speaks for itself! At least, I'll feel free :) No regrets.

Bunch of thanks Ken

Hello Magictortoise,

I thought that I could post again on my story with my ex. Well, I did contact him and I got a reply a few days after. Well I didn't go how I was hoping for...I said he met someone else a while ago. Don't know if the IC got it wrong, if I got it wrong or if the IC was talking about things which will happen in quite some time. Thing is, I thought he might have someone in his life but.. I hoped not. I'm not thrilled about it...

A while before that, I often got Hex. 3 when casting the IC. The difficulties of the beginning. Well I didn't know if it would be the difficulties of the beginning between us, of the dfficulties of another beginning for me ... I'll stay his friend (maybe that's what the IC means in persevering...Thing is I don't know anymore).

I won't annoy you any longer. I thank you very much for your help with the IC.

Cheers

Mousse,
Just because the outcome was not as you hoped doesn't mean anyone got it 'wrong': you or the I ChIng. Outcomes are outcomes and it bothers me a bit when we assign a judgment to them of ourselves, like right or wrong. What matters most is that you attempted to embody the oracle's reply as best you could. The outcome was what was intended for your personal growth and now you have to relate well to it. The derived hexagram for the question was 20, contemplation. Perhaps the I CHing means you to have long thoughts about the situation and your relation to your ex.

Always remember this maxim by a Confucian sage: There is not a single thing that should NOT have been there. all things are complete in man. We must not hate anything.

Don't beat yourself up over figuring out the reply. If you want you might ask the I Ching for a grade in how you handled the whole thing.

Best regards and your letters are not an annoyance,

Ken

Dear Ken,

Once again thank you for your reply. Deep inside, I know that what happened with my ex, happened for one reason. It's just I'm disappointed now. Maybe he is not ready to commit, maybe I'm not. Maybe it's better this way for now. I'll probably ask the IC again.

I've been doing a lot of thinking this past months and things are not that clear. Let's hope it will get better ;-).

I'll remember the maxim of the Confucian sage :)

Thank you very much ,

Mousse
