Hello, All. This is my first time posting here, and Hex. 44 brought me here. :)

I've been mourning the change in a close friendship, and I wanted to ask the I Ching about the friendship. I took a few minutes to settle my mind and when I went to actually ask my question, I got as far as, "If I do nothing different..." when I realized that I really wanted to ask a more broad question, so I finished, "...from what I am doing now, what will my future be like in the next few years?" I received #44, unchanging as my answer. I read the Wilhelm translation, but remained in the dark. That's when I googled #44 I Ching and found this site. After reading a thread in "Exploring Divination" about #44, I came to the conclusion that maybe another question would shed some light.

So I then asked, "In what area of my life do I need a major overhaul?" and I got an unchanging #11. I am very inexperienced with the I Ching, but the 2 hexagrams seemed potent and important, especially together. Even the numbers 44 and 11 seemed to have some comment, but I need some guidance. The only thing I could really come up with is that if I don't pursue peace in my life, there is the possibility that I could be vulnerable to whatever #44 was pointing me to.

Thanks for your insight.

Hm... it could be saying that the future will be a plutonian challenge, if you continue doing what you are doing now. 11 could be that everything is pretty much perfect... OR if there is anything you need to change it would be in the direction of what hexagram 11 is showing. Strength within gentleness without etc.

Also I'll go out on a limb here and say perhaps your sex life (in terms of 11)? And perhaps male female dynamics? Who knows...

My take is you are reading this with a slightly too destiny orientated mindset.

Can Yi tell you what next few years will like....you haven't made them yet and how they will be will depend alot on you. Also theres so many facets to life...if you ask what life will be like do you mean, spiritually, practically, in terms of money, career, relationship.....its all a multi faceted ever changing picture and I could never say that any hexagram could represent your life on the next few years.

IMO Yi is best as aid to decision making, awareness and of course self knowlege...and amongst this of course we get to see which way the wind is blowing and what it may bring and so there is an element of foreknowledge, prediction if you like but thats not the sole function IMO

So to your questions as I understood them you asked 'if I continue as I am how will life be in a few years ?' And you got 44. Has me a little stumped too for the above reasons....what is the 44 addressing ? 44 often refers to things that crop up and demand our attention rather forcefully, often experienced as an interruption to our usual paths in life. It can be a stimulating occurence or it can be disruptive.

....but I agree with you that getting that and then 11 unchanging just feels of significance. I guess you felt that intuitively and I feel you were right...though I can't exactly pin point why.....I guess together one gets the sense of fairly powerful currents in life. 44 may shows being somewhat swept away by an outer factor, such as a passion for a person or a lifestyle that you are tempted to give yourself wholly over to.

The advice is I think whilst the passion can be a creative factor you must also guard against not losing yourself or being derailed by this new thing. It says one does 'not marry the maiden'. IOW you must not look to the passion/interest or whatever it is to be a permanant sustaining factor in your life. Be aware of its dangers, theres a 'moth to the flame' feel about it. You can briefly unite with it...and its often been taken as relating to the artistic process where an artist may be 'seized' by an impulse to paint etc but one cannot endure living under this impulse long term. I often quote an experience of Knots where he got 44 re jump starting a car...such a great analogy. That way of igniting something to life is needed but one cannot keep on jump starting engines as a normal way of life. maybe all that helps give a flavour ?

re your second question, hex 11, 'Peace' is a very misleading title for hexagram 11, it is better called 'flow' which is what Hilary calls it since it oft far from peaceful....in a good way. Its a time where one is in the flow of life, theres great potential....again theres the sense one maybe carried away as everything seems to be moving forward to reach potential

I'd say there are fairly potent energies in your life that you may need to be aware of harnessing ? That possibly you are not fully aware of the power and energy at your disposal. Also unchanging hexagrams often are said to ask you a question. Like 'what will you do with all this creative potential you have'. Theres times when life seems 'on a roll' thats pretty much how I think of hex 11...it can be quite tiring...as you can see 'peace' is not the word for it.

I'd possibly say that if you need to overhaul anything...and of course the question carries an assumption that you need to whereas you may not..its in getting a sense of the currents of your life, their force, how you can ride them, where you are carried.

I guess if you aren't aware of where you are carried in the 11 time you could end up in a 44 situation of being carried somewhere you didn't entirely choose.

You do already seem to have an intuitive feel for the sense of your answer

My hot tip is don't pay too much attention to hexagram titles, they can be very misleading and the best book around for clear understandings of hexagrams etc especially for beginners is Hilarys . She has changed some of the hexagrams titles to something more realistic

Thank you both Cyclotron and trojan for taking the time to give your input.

Yes, trojan, I have felt for some time that there is some sort of awakening in me wanting to take place, but I feel like I can't quite break through. I can almost taste spiritual freedom; it is as though I'm inside a bubble which is about to burst, and I want it to! I've never been of an artistic bent, but I feel like I want to create something as well. And, no, it is not an "easy, peaceful" feeling; I feel sorta like I did 20+ years ago when I went off to college for the first time--expectant and excited. But whereas back then I had the college experience to "ride," to take me along the flow, this time, its just me. I know that I am expressing myself poorly, but maybe it makes a little sense.

And thanks also, trojan, for the advice on how to consult the I Ching. Coming up with the right question seems to be paramount.
