Howdy all. I hope everything's going well with everyone. I'm here with a question that I think I understand the IC's answer to, but it would be great if someone else would take a look and say what they think. To give some background of the situation, my dad lost his job a month ago. He pretty much started looking for another one right away, but no luck so far. He's worked in fast food for a very long time, and an old contact from the company that he was just terminated from heard about what happend and contacted him. This contact is a guy who now works for a pizza place, an organization that now has several restaurants that are currently without a general manager, so when this guy told his bosses about my dad they sounded very interested in him since he does have lots of experience in management. Well,it's close to a month later and a lot of rigormarole has happened trying to get my dad an interview, and it now looks like this whole thing has fallen through. I know this is a discouraging thing, just like the fact that my dad's going all over the place talking to people and putting in applications, only to not hear anything from anyone. So I've turned to the IC for some advice.

I asked the IC: How are things looking in regard to my dad's job prospects? I received Hex 49 line 2 changing to Hex 43. Hmmm...radical change and determination/resolution. I think line 2 seems to be saying that the way my dad has been going about trying to find a new job is not working for him and will continue to not work for him, so he needs to change his approach/procedure. Some IC texts use the word 'aggressive' in line 2, so I'm wondering if he needs to be a little more aggressive in his approach with prospective employers--not hostile, mind you, but maybe just a little more forceful in selling himself. He is someone who is just a little too laid back for his own good in a lot of ways. But if being more aggressive is not really the advice here, I still think the IC is saying he needs to change the way he's going about things, and that he'll have to make the decision on his own without anyone else putting pressure on him about it--like, say, my mom, because she can be so impatient. There's emphasis on the timing being right as well.

Also, line two seems to talk about the need to find someone (or something) that will be a "successful guide". At one point I might have thought that the guy from the pizza place may be that guide, but now I'm not too sure. Going back to the need to change the way he's going about things, I've thought that the internet may be both that radical change he needs to make as well as being the successful guide. He's only using the internet to put in applications when that's the only way an organization will accept one, and he's not using it to do job searches. I want to suggest to him to start doing job searches on the net since that should really broaden his options.

I've also found an old post where I think it's Poccossin saying that Hex 49 is about appearances, so that has me wondering if my dad should do something he initially thought about, which is dye his hair. He's in his late fifties and has a lot of gray in his hair. Maybe a radical change would be to dye his hair and give himself a more youthful appearance, especially important since we are in the USA where there's such an overemphasis on youth.

Well, I think I've gotton out most of my thoughts on this reading. Sorry about it being so long.

Hi Artio,

I find your interpretation very thorough. Both the primary hex, the changing line and the relating hex call for action. Your dad should find a way to approach his job search differently. A broader perspective could help. Different industries? Employment agencies? Thinking outside of the box is recommended, in my view.

Improving his looks could be useful. Dying his hair? Yes, especially is he's blonde - dark hair is trickier and requires a professional touch to look natural. A healthy tan perhaps? Whatever can make him look more energetic and self-confident could do, without overdoing it. He's a solid, experienced professional, and that's what prospect employers should value.

All the best and keep us posted :)

I think your interpretation is great too. The major change at this point in your dad's life almost naturally lends itself to transformation because he has the necessity of adapting now. he may make the changes at his own pace, which is okay, but I'm betting that he will be listening to your suggestions. (ps sometimes people unfamiliar with the internet shy away because it seems stange and overwhelming. you can help there. take him through craigslist, too, seems that is where so many jobs are posted these days) wish you the best.

Hi Cris and Bamboo, and thank you both for responding. It really makes me feel better that I have made a correct interpretation. I'm going to get together with my mom tomorrow and tell her about the reading (she's opened-minded about metaphysical things). I'm going to emphasize with her that it really just needs to be suggestions coming from us, that nothing can be forced; he has to make up his own mind about this in order for there to be success. I've also been thinking a lot about Blofeld's text on Hex 49: "We must not advance further until certain major changes have been completed." That's the footnote explaining "On the day the revolution is completed, to advance brings good fortune and is free from error." It makes me think that the one really important change that needs to take place before my dad does anything else is to just change his outlook on the situation and start thinking outside the box, as Cris says. I feel the moment he decides to begin thinking outside the box is the moment that he can begin to move towards the successful outcome of finding an employer who will hire him.

Again, thank you both for your input, because it really helps!

Howdy. I made another reading into the situation. This time I asked: What does my dad need to change to make his job search more successful? I received Hex 2 line 4 changing to Hex 16. The receptive and enthusiasm. At first I thought this reading was talking about a concern that I mentioned in my initial post, that my dad's too laid back and coming across as seeming too passive. Blofeld using "taciturnity" as how he'd describes this line certainly seems like a reflection of how my dad can be. I was thinking that "no blame, no praise" meant that while my dad wasn't making a bad impression on prospective employers, he's not making a good one on them either. So it seem like Hex 16 and enthusiasm would be the natural step to take, that he needs to be a bit more outgoing, more of a go-getter type. That would certainly make him come across as more energetic.

But then I kept thinking about line 4, about how it advises to be more prudent, to be careful, that one needs to be watchful. Is the IC really saying that my dad's being too careful, too passive? Or is the IC really giving advice directly to me this time? I'm starting to think that maybe the IC is telling me to take a more passive role here, that I need to keep my mouth shut and mind my own business. Maybe when Hex 49 says that he needs to come to the conclusion to make changes all on his own it's not kidding--he really has to figuring things out for himself. "No blame, no praise"...well, if I offer no advice I'll never be praised for giving him good advice; but no one will blame me for giving him bad advice either. Perhaps I am not the guide that leads my dad to success that's spoken of in line 2 of Hex 49.

I'm a bit puzzled on this one. I felt so certain at first, but now I have doubts about my initial interpretation. Does anyone have any thoughts on this one?

Rather than trying to figure out if this reading is a comment about you, I suggest you ask the I Ching straight out, "How can I best help my dad?" or "What is my role in this?"

My own interpretation of 2.4 in regards to this question is that your dad ought not put more energy into this search but that doesn't sound like very good advice... Maybe it's just saying he's done enough, that if it's meant to be the other side will initiate something. Maybe he shouldn't put more energy into the fast food business. Find something else to be 16. Enthusiastic about.

Best wishes,
Rosada

Thank you, Rosada. That is exactly what I was thinking of doing, to ask a straightforward question to the IC of how can I best help him. This second reading just seems too confusing to me, and I don't want to make a mistep here and end up making things worse for him.

Ok, I asked the IC: What can I do to best help my dad in his job search efforts? I received Hex 39 lines 3 and 4 changing to Hex 45. Obstacles and gathering. Lines 3 and 4 seem to both say that going forward with anything right now will not benefit, that I need to wait a while before saying or doing much of anything concerning my dad and his job search. I'm also thinking that line 4 is saying that someone else may be of more help here, but this person is not in the picture yet. Hex 39 does repeat Hex 2 in that they both say that the directions south and west are good, but north and east are bad. It's funny, because with the city we live in now, the town my mom's originally from (and she still has relatives there) is southwest of where we're at now. Maybe my dad needs help from one of his in-laws?

I got together with my mom and dad a while ago for a conference about the situation, and I tried to say as little as possible, just keeping things general by saying that he needs to try and think outside the box. I didn't really make any specific suggestions, feeling that maybe he needs to think of those things on his own. My mom had earlier said something to him about dying his hair, so he bought some Just for Men when he went to the store a while ago. My mom made a few specific suggestions during our conference and asked me if I'd help my dad with them, and I said that I would if that's what he wants. With the emphasis on line 4 I just keep wanting to think that it's someone else that's going to be my dad's big helper and not so much me. Maybe with Hex 45 being the resulting hex, the IC is saying to wait, that once this other person has come into the picture that we can all gather together and go from there in helping my dad with his job search efforts. The IC could also be saying that since there was already the plan for my parents and I to gather together for the conference this afternoon (Hex 45), that I need to proceed with caution and not say too much right now.

I guess we'll see, but I'm starting to feel a bit uneasy about things now. I'm starting to think that the Hex 16 of the Hex 2 changing to Hex 16 reading I did last night is telling me that I've been overeager in wanting to tell my dad all the things he could be doing differently. But it just seems the IC is advising me to hold back, at least for right now.

There is a poem Martin, a member of Clarity, wrote once. I think it combines 2.4 and h 16.

16
Please wait, don't do anything, just listen, just feel ..
Listen to the sound of silence ..
And feel the waves of peace ..

Within the sound of silence you will hear other sounds, subtle sounds.
Within the waves of peace you will feel other waves, subtle waves.

Subtle signals ..
Do you hear them? Do you feel them?

If you don't, no need to worry, just wait.
The time will come. Just listen, just feel ...

Hey! Now don't fall asleep! Stay alert! Be ready!

But please wait. Just listen. Just feel.
When the time to act comes you will know it.
When the door opens you will hear it.
When the wall gives way you will feel it.

Just listen to the sound of rain ..
And feel the drops falling on your face ..
That is all you need to do.

Hi Anemos. Thank you for posting the poem. It sounds like the right kind of advice to help temper an overeager spirit.

Rosada, I think you may be on to something about Hex 2.4 saying that my dad should not put anymore energy into looking for another job in the food service industry. I read just a while ago on another thread a post by Poccossin saying that Hex 2 can be about food. I also visit an IC site (rightreading.com) that says line 4 of Hex 2 is a sack of grain. So there is the image of food via that interpretation.

Hi artio, I could so relate to your thread cause Im so very close to my Dad too. Have you considered starting a food business on your own, something small, family owned bakes and breads from home.. something, anything? Cause your initial reading hex 49 could mean transformation not just in terms of external appearences but maybe a whole new perspective and change? Just a thought.

All the best to your dad.

Hi, Shubslola. Thank you for your response. My dad has said something he'd like to do is have a home business, but the thing about owning one's own business is that one has to have money to start it--and my parents are broke! Yes, I agree that hex 49 is probably pointing to my dad needing to make more of an internal change about things, a new perspective as you said. But I think the Hex 49 reading as well as the other readings I've listed are saying that I need to leave him alone to make his own changes and decisions about things, that I cannot give much imput.

I'm sorry to report that nothing much has changed since the last time I posted. He's looked at so many places, even eventually had an interview with the pizza place, but nothing has come up so far. He even tried applying for unemloyment benefits and was denied. My mom wants to put their house up for sale soon since it still has an expensive mortgage on it.

I did walk my mom through a reading on how she could best help my dad in this situation, and received Hex 5 with lines 2, 3, and 4 changing to Hex 17. I'm taking it to mean that the best thing she can do is keep the faith that she and my dad will get through this situation, that it will not last forever. At least, I hope that is what the IC is saying.

Howdy all. I have some news. In late October my dad was hired for a seasonal job that ended right after Christmas, so it was right back to where he started from. But it turns out that my mom knows a lady at the gym she goes to who used to have a job helping other people find jobs. My mom brought the lady a copy of my dad's resume so she could have a look at it. At first glance, the lady said it looked all wrong, that it'd need a lot of changing. The lady felt that the resume may be one of the main things hurting my dad in his job search. I think some time later my mom was talking with this same lady and some man at the gym, and the man suggested that my dad go to GoodWill since they have some sort of career development/help center there. My dad went to Goodwill and they helped him with his resume, and also he signed up for some computer classes.

More interesting news is that just the other day my dad found out about this new restaurant that's being built in our town, and he emailed them his new resume. Tonight he tells me that they have called him to come in for an interview tomorrow. It's all so odd, because I was starting to wonder if maybe GoodWill is the "man" mentiong in line 2 who is to be turned to when one is ready to make a radical change (also the lady and the man at the gym too). I realize that my dad may not be hired by this new restaurant, but this is still good news to me because him just getting called in for an interview is showing progress. For so long he went around to so many different places, giving out his resume and putting in applications, only to not hear anything at all, not even a phone call. Since Hex 49 stress the timing being right, maybe now is the right time.

Howdy all. Well, the pizza place finally hired my dad. He started working for them on February 29th. I'm just not sure what to make of a situation where a place takes around six months to hire someone, but at least my dad's working again. I'm also not sure what sort of radical change (Hex 49) took place with my dad so that he could finally be working again, but I guess that is something that is between him and the Universe.
