I am narrowing down an apartment purchase selection and I asked the Yi today if there was a better option for me out there than the one I have my eye on right now. The Yi said in reply:

Hexagram 5 (changing lines 2,4,6) and Hex. 13.

Can anyone help with this, both timewise and interpretation-wise?
Is it an admonishment to keep looking? I honestly was not asking "should I buy or not".. I was asking "should i buy THIS one or not".

Hi elizabeth,

"I asked the Yi today if there was a better option for me out there than the one I have my eye on right now. The Yi said in reply:

Hexagram 5 (changing lines 2,4,6) and Hex. 13."

"I was asking "should i buy THIS one or not"."

Hex 5.2 disagreements etc but remain calm in this situation and you will be okay.

Hex 5.4 you find yourself in a difficult situation, so make no move.

Hex 5.6 perhaps you have fallen into a trap here, wrong place, but don't worry someone will pop up and help you out, accept their help.

Is the price of the apartment too high? Is there a problem with it? Are things happening way too fast here? Nothing is stopping you buying but? Something is wrong.

Hex 13 join with others, friends etc, and get them to help. Perhaps your return home will prove to be fortunate as travel is good.

Times for you to chew on, hex 5 = end of February and hex 13 = begin August, I am not sure how they fit into your question though.

Hi Willowfox,
Thanks for being the sole response to my thread! I had asked the Yi a specific question earlier this weeka bout purchasing this specific apartment (I gave it the address). I asked what was the TIME for the purchase and I got hex2 twice, unchanging. After some help from outside Yi Ching believers who are my friends, I learned that this could mean "yes buy now but by *before* Jan. 7th". With that in mind, and wondering if there was another option I was missing I asked the question above. So, it is interesting that lines 4 and 6 seems to suggest I should pause or reconsider. The price of the apartment yes, IS too high but I would offer cash at a lower rate and hope the owner would agree. (no clue what the response would be though). There are no problems that i know of about the apt per se, but I am looking into some questions I have about it (a shared wall w/neighbors for example).

So -- Hex 13 saying return home might help -- but my deadline to buy seems to be *before* that trip home (dec. 19th-jan.8). End of February -- hmm. Nothing is going on here then. August is the time I'd consider moving back to the US -- its the first timeframe I'd seriously consider doing so... Hm. I wonder if Feb is a time to buy?

Hi Elizabeth,

Rather than a direct interpretation, maybe it would be better to give a way into looking things.

When there are more than 1 changing lines it is difficult to have a sense in the hexagrams and the lines. Hence concentrating on the images of the both hexagrams might be helpful.

Hexagram 5 is Kan above Qian below. Rain clouds above yet the rain has not come yet. There is not much one can do to make the rain happen other than wait. On the other hand when the rain comes it brings fertility and nourishment.

Tong Ren (Hexagram 13) is also a term used in communist china for "comrade". Comrade does not mean, in my understanding, someone who has an advantage.

The nuclear hexagram is Li above dui below (Hex. 38) diversity, opposition.

Therefore your position is unique (hex 38) compared to the people living in the country (hex 13) and waiting for nourishment (hex 5) is needed.

As said not an interpretation just food for thought.

Hi elizabeth,

hex 2 is indeed a postive answer but more from a passive approach to this sale, ie let the owner do the talking and then see what happens. Hex 2 indicates the last week in October.

If you are sure that you want this place, then you must certainly bargain with the guy but like I said the price is high and I wonder if he wiil come down to a sensible price. You can certainly come to an agreement with him within the next 11 days, but be cautious. Hex 5.4 and 5.6 says that you should remove yourself from this place, but I don't know why. Is it a ground floor apartment, close to water?

You are in strong position here because you can opt out of this if something is indeed wrong. Perhaps something about this deal will change in the next few weeks, I wonder. Hex 5.4 does say for you to make no move and to try an remove yourself from this deal. I keep seeing something wrong, is it the apartment, is it the legal part, is it way overpriced, does it have a flaw?
See what happens, and don't rush this one.

Toganm thanks - my confusion lies in the fact that, basically, waiting here won't bring me nourishment. Prices are going UP over time here, not down. If i wait, I wont be able to buy at all bc everything will be out of my range. As for nourishment, if i wait long enough I will be forced to leave this country for a higher income elsewhere... that might be "Nourishment" but not from my POV. I am trying to see the rain=fertility=positive outcome in light of this situation but it seems difficult (we tend to think of rain as negative...) I understand your point with these hexes but I cant see how that relates to the apartment purchase, esp given the supposed time frames of the hexes. (they seem to suggest short time frames...buy now, buy before Jan. 7, buy before February, etc -- not longer than that though (???).

++

Willowfox-- interesting. Could the hexes be speaking to my current rental-to-be? (I move on Nov. 18 and I'm dreading it). THAT apartment is ground floor, yes. And I'm very concerned it will be too noisy. Truth be told, I am /have been tempted to rush to buy this other apartment simply so I dont have to rent the one i've already arranged to rent. It may just be anxiety about the unknown, not sure. Now i'm afriad this reading is telling me not to move in! I dont know what other issues might be there -but this isnt the one i was asking the Yi about obviously.

The apartment I was referring to isn't ground floor, its 3rd of 5 floors...however it's been on the market for over a month. The entire market is slowing down (we already had our first snowfall here Oct. 30) and my best bet is that buying will slow to a crawl until Feb/March. So this one not selling may only be reflecting the sleepiness of the market (ie its in my favor to buy while everyone else is hunkering down for winter).

I have not spoken to anyone about this potential purchase, including the agent and owner. I have been waiting to phone and see it again bc I am not sure how to proceed. So from that perspective, Hex 5.4 says make no move...but i haven't moved yet. Does it mean not to? I am wondering (as you are) if there is smthing wrong with this apartment. I still feel pressured by the double 2 hexes to do this before Dec. 19. Although then, what difference if I call now or wait til Dec. 1st for example?

Oh yes: where is the 11-day timeframe from? What if i wait until after 11 days? I am supposed to move on the 18th and all of next week I willbe slammed busy with work; which is another reason I'm not putting wheels in motion now, bc i know i wont have any time to deal between Nov. 14 and 19th/20th...

Hi elizabeth,

Hex 5.4 and 5.6 suggests you should avoid this place, withdraw.
There is nothing stopping you from buying this place, that is the easy bit, but is it a good deal?
The owner probably needs the money, so there is a good chance of some bargaining to be had.
The first asking price is over the top.
But again, there seems to be something wrong with the place. More investigation is needed before you make any kind of decision.
Well, the thing to do now is to check it out much more carefully, and look for the faults.

Hex 2 timewise has no relevance here at all, so don't think that you are under any pressure to run out and buy an apartment. Something this important has to be done very carefully.

hi willowfox,

Okay, that makes sense. I'm gonna go out on a limb, put 100% faith in the Yi, and not even bother with this place. I think it would be a good deal, but perhaps the issue is that I don't need a good deal, I need a solid purchase,a good investment within my price range. I'm sure I could bargain this guy down if I try. I wonder if its worth it though.

I was just browsing the listings and there are some other options I can look into that might be interesting, so I'm going to keep looking since I have the time. I agree that something this big needs to be done carefully - so in theory I need to take my time and be thorough. (I just feel so pressured, partly due to my own rental situation -- the quicker I can get out of it, the better off I will be financially.)

Hi elizabeth,

perhaps Hex 5.2,4,6 can be suggesting that this rush to buy an apartment should be set aside for a while, here is a little bit different answer but still it says no to the apartment in question;

Hex 5.2 the apartment that you are now talking about is putting you in danger, you are on unsafe ground here, so don't worry what others say, leave it alone. Good fortune.

Hex 5.4 you find yourself in the centre of a bad situation with this house hunting, you can't seem to make any progress, it is upsetting you, but stay calm and withdraw for the time being, wait.

Hex 5.6 says that you are stuck, you have lots of problems, setbacks etc with this house hunting. But when all hope is lost, then something or someone unexpectedly turns up, go for it. The waiting is over. It will be fortunate.

This then leads to hex 13, the joining with others and travel.

So don't worry, a happy outcome is predicted here.

Hi wf,
Your comments about the warning (near water/ground floor etc) prompted me to ask another question, to clarify if perhaps again the Yi was seeing the rental I'm moving into as the apartment I was asking about. (Remember in the previous reading, it saw "rental" and "purchase" as the same: new residence). I just now asked what I need to know about the rental i'm moving into next weekend. It gave me 54.3 and then hex 19.

Since 54 is "The Marrying Maiden. Undertakings bring misfortune. Nothing that would further." And line 3 is: The marrying maiden as a slave. She marries as a concubine.

I found this "translation" of that line: ""The conversion to a woman has been done by growing their hair. When converted back we find it is but a young girl." Which is said to signify unexpected change. I also found the comment that it is forcing one to adapt to change and therefore change within oneself. From elsewhere on this site:

"Receiving Hexagram 54 often reflects a very insecure, frustrating situation. But although this is change you didn't ask for and can't control, it could still be bringing you something of value. 'Marriage' can also mean finding your own place and fulfilling your destiny. The moving lines will show where you find yourself in this new situation: if line 5 is among them, then great things can grow from here."

So, is this reading just saying "It will be an adjustment, and it sucks that you have to make it, but you do"... or is there some positive (or negative) implication?

And what of hex 19? "When the eight month comes,
There will be misfortune."

Meaning: I'll have to move out at some point, readjust AGAIN -- however hard or easy relocating may be, I wont be able to rely on living in this place forever. Is that it?

Hi elizabeth,

"I just now asked what I need to know about the rental i'm moving into next weekend. It gave me 54.3 and then hex 19."

Hex 54.3 says at first you will not be very happy here but you don't have any choice at the moment, so what can you do.

Hex 19 says that once you move in and become acquainted with your new surroundings, it will be okay, very pleasant but it won't last, so don't think of it as a long term home. Either, something happens or you just become fed up and want to move on.

As you are not in a strong position at the moment you will have to make a go of it, later the place will grow on you but things come and go, so eventually you will probably move on once again but it gives you a breathing space to find something better next time. The place itself is not too bad, overall it seems to be quite strong, warm and dry for a ground floor place. Does it face south?

Hex 19 indicates the end of December, if that is of any use to you. Also, see what happens around the middle of January, travel?

thanks Willowfox. What do the dates here have to do with the apartment?

That is, yes, I'm flying back to the US on Dec. 19 and back to my current 'Home" in mid January but what is that saying about the apartment? (since the reading is about the apartment and not my travel plans). Does it mean that something will happen with the apartment at those times?

Hi elizabeth,

"What do the dates here have to do with the apartment?"

To be quite honest with you I am not sure exactly how they apply, but, perhaps, maybe something , a problem, will crop up in the middle of January to do with the rental place. And after December something about the way you view or feel about the place changes in a negative way.
