Hi everyone,
I'm new here, though I've been lurking for several days, reading so many wonderful posts regarding several different hexagrams. I've learned so much already in the short time I've been perusing the public community board, and I must add that Hilary's blog posts have been particularly illuminating and helpful.
Though I'm not entirely new to the I Ching (I was first introduced to it at age 14; I'm now in my forties), it is only recently that I've begun to engage it more seriously. I think I simply lacked the necessary maturity at age 14.
Introductions aside, I'm here with a specific question regarding how to interpret hex 51 (in the context provided below).
I received this hexagram twice in the past 24 hours.
Q1. Why hasn't J____ responded to my last two emails?
A1. 51.6 > 21
Background information: The emails in question were work-related letters, nothing personal or private; although, J and I also have carried on a more affectionate, private correspondence and face-to-face friendship/mutual attraction. Admittedly I was asking in part to get a sense of whether this other, more private aspect of our connection was now impeding our professional correspondence.
Q2. Will I receive communication from J____ before the end of the month?
A2. 51.1.2 > 40
A day after asking Q1, I asked the above yes/no question, which I typically do not do, due to the style of the I Ching, which seems better suited for what or how questions -- or process oriented questions. What interests me is that 51 is involved in both answers.
I felt I understood the first answer, which I basically interpreted as "J is not responding because there's some other matters he's dealing with; perhaps he will reply once he's bitten through (sorted things out)." In light of this, do I interpret the answer to my second question as Yi merely affirming this point, that is, reinforcing the first answer? Or is it indicating "No, J___ will not communicate before the end of the month"?
Any interpretive guidance you can offer is greatly appreciated. My underlying fear is that our personal connection/history may now be interfering with our professional connection. I had stopped our non-professional correspondence last month. Not because my feelings have changed, only because doing so seemed appropriate--in alignment with our circumstances, at least for now.
