WHAT IS HOLDING OR HAS HELD JIM BACK FROM BEING SUCCESSFUL? HOW SHOULD HE PROCEED?

This is only part 1 of my interpretation but I would like to share it and if anyone has anything to include I am open to receiving. My boyfriend (or ex-boyfriend) of what was 10 years of boy and girl friending, has cancer... big and bad cancer. He has just embarked on several surgeries and is presently healing in Fort Worth, Texas on what is by far the most life changing of the surgeries. This is the first time he has EVER asked me to do a reading for him. It applies to both past and present/future. I went with what flowed through me as to how I couched the two hexagrams ... here it is...

HEXAGRAM (HEX) 62: THE SMALL EXCEEDS changes to HEXAGRAM (HEX) 7: THE ARMY
The way I interpreted these two hexagrams was in how they work together versus HEX 62 creates a result where HEX 7 follows. This suggests you are acting and correcting in the present to have an outcome in the future. In your case these two work together. It requires small successful steps (HEXAGRAM 62) in conjunction with discipline and organization (HEXAGRAM 7) to meet your goal.

For both past and present/future successes the same applies in both cases. The past successes have been small or smaller than you desired based on the same reasons that the present and future successes will be successful.

HEX 62: THE SMALL EXCEEDS

The way to create success for you is through small actions that are great in their own right that have you meet the greater goal. What motivates your success is an Inner Truth (HEXAGRAM 61). HEXAGRAM 61 is the complementary hexagram that is the foundation upon which you establish all of your goals and successes. Inner Truth is defined by your values and beliefs that are founded in a conviction of what is "right". "The right thing to do, even when nobody is looking" Only you know this truth. "Inner Truth means trust." (Barrett, 2012) Inner Truth = Trust. As you pointed out, success or greatness of the success is bound to trust... too trusting leads you astray because you are not grounded... lack of trust inhibits possibilities because limits your willingness to take action. Trust is not how you trust in another but how much you believe in yourself...or trust yourself to do the right thing. It also means that you trust that the result will always be the same as it was before based on your past experiences or an unfounded belief. Also you can trust someone else to do as they have always done. So trust is extensive in its meaning and how you apply it. How you have trusted yourself or another is the mitigating factor that causes you to act. "Your inner convictions, this naturally moves you into action, which takes you into the vast inhospitable landscape ...."(Barrett, 2012)

THE JUDGEMENT (Wilhelm, 1997)
PREPONDERANCE OF THE SMALL. Success.
Perseverance Furthers.
Small things may be done; great things should not be done.
The flying bird brings the message:
It is not well to strive upward,
It is well to remain below.
Great good fortune.

COMMENTARY ON THE DECISION (JUDGEMENT) (Wilhelm, 1997)

PREPONDERANCE OF THE SMALL. The small preponderate and have success. To be furthered in transition by perseverance: this means going with the time.
During this time of transition it is best to persist in what is small because at this time this is what you can do and still be successful.

The yielding attains the middle, hence good fortune in small things.
The yielding refers to line 2 which is aligned with the even number place of position 2. Even numbers naturally appeal to yielding lines (-- --) and odd number lines appeal to strong lines (-----). In this case, line 2 has attained the middle and is correct and appropriate in its action. This is also a changing line a directly pertains to you. This line and the position 2 are appropriate and correct, balanced, holds the middle and does not make large or big changes or movements but focuses on what is lowly. Lowly in this case, describes humble or modest and because it is line 2 of the lower triagram (KEN = mountain) it represents the lower position and closer to the earth. The upper triagram (CHEN = thunder) is closer to heaven and represents a more lofty pursuit.

The hard has lost its place is not in the middle: hence one should not do great things.
The hard refers to Line 5 which in this case is a yielding line (-- --). When this line is correct and appropriate it is a strong line (-----). This is because odd number line positions appeal to strong lines. Again the fact the line is yielding in line 5 is (-- --) and not (-----) suggests that this position which represents the prince or ruler is taking a yielding position as it acts.

The hexagram has the form of a flying bird.
The actual shape of the hexagram looks like a flying bird thus the bird brings a message to you.
Top and bottom 4 lines (lines 1,2,5,6) are (-- --) and represent the wings of the bird.
The middle 2 lines (lines 3,4) are (-----) and are the body of the bird.

"The flying bird brings the message: It is not well to strive upward,It is well to remain below. Great good fortune." Striving upward is rebellion, striving downward is devotion.
It is best to remain close to the earth because the natural habitat of the bird is on earth and not the heavens. It is best not to fly up too high or make to great of attempt (like Icarus) or you will not find success but be met with exhaustion or met with a response from heaven.

Modesty (HEXAGRAM 15) and contentiousness are the way to success. At this time you are unable to make great successes but only small successes. If you attempt to make great successes you will exhaust or overwhelm yourself. It is best to be like the bird and remain close to the earth.

It is not the end result that is great or not great it is how you proceed towards the goal. It is in the small that you make steps to success.

"We must understand that the demands of the time in order find necessary offset for its deficiencies and damages...In any event, we must not count on great success, since the requisite strength is lacking." (Wilhelm, 1997)
This quote directly appeals to your current condition. The time as in what is happening now is how we must act. At this time damages and deficiencies are abundant and the requisite or required strength is not there......YET...so in order be successful at this time means to gauge our abilities based on what your condition is allowing.

THE IMAGE (Wilhelm, 1997)
Thunder on the Mountain.
The image of PREPONDERANCE OF THE SMALL.
Thus in his conduct the superior man gives preponderance to reverence.
In bereavement he gives preponderance in grief.
In expenditures he gives preponderance in thrift.

Thunder that is coming from the plains becomes fainter as we move towards the mountain. In transition the effects of what we are transitioning from (that which has placed us low) to where we are transitioning to (that which we aspire to achieve that is higher or greater than before) becomes less of an impact as we makes our way from low to high. As we make the necessary progress from where we are to where we want to go, the initial impact of transition and change seems so abrasive and difficult to embody or resonate. With time and with small efforts towards the goal we experience that the initial impact is not so great but becomes a faint but recognizable impression as opposed to the brazen impact it was.

This is the play on words: "Thunder rising from the plains to the heights becomes gradually fainter in transition. From this is taken the idea of over-weighting,of doing a little too much in the right way. For it is precisely by doing a little too much in the direction of the small we hit the marks at as to what is right." (Wilhelm, 1997)

By paying attention to detail, to following every guideline, rule, instruction... to the exact word you will be able to achieve your goal (towards health). It may appear to other people that you are being too precise (versus accurate... you do not want accurate because you may not be hitting the mark every time) that it may come across as too much in things that appear to other as too little to concern themselves... but it is in this precision of action that will gets you to the right place. It is not in the accuracy of the journey but in the precision of each step.

"Thus the superior man derives an imperative from the image: He must always fix his eyes more closely and more directly on duty than does the ordinary man; even though this might make his behavior seem petty to the outside world." (Wilhelm, 1997)
you may see what you are doing as being too detailed too much MINUTIA... which I know you love...but it is in this detail that the difference between okay and success and great success will be established. If there is one area of your life you hate to dwell in ....that is the minutia and detail... well that is what has been lacking from your successes past ..now change the future when it ABSOLUTELY COUNTS THE MOST.

You posted this thread 8 days ago Sylvia and there have been no replies. You could also post it in CC now you are a member ?

I mean it's not a great idea to have an exact duplicate in 2 places what I meant was given you are a member of CC you can post your questions there especially since there is no feedback here.

Possibly you haven't had replies because you did such a thorough job yourself ? For me the question seems at odds with the situation. When you ask what is preventing him from being successful I'm guessing you mean successful in his treatment ? Seems an unusual way to put it. I find it difficult to connect the question with the situation with the answer.

62.2.3.4>7 does look quite a long hard road to me simply going on a brief impression. That need to be incredibly careful in order to deal with this.

But is it a matter of 'success' exactly - that's what I don't get.

Sometimes the specifics of the question don't matter so much, but here ... I am not really clear what you're asking, and I find myself wanting to know:

Are you asking: why is Jim not more successful in battling his cancer? Or...

In the midst of dealing with cancer, you want to know - why isn't Jim more successful in other areas of his life, like career or finances? Or ...

Something else???

And whom it's asking? Is it Jim wondering why he's not successful (and you're just phrasing it in the third person)? Or is it you who is asking this?

As far as the reading ... and speaking of small in excess, there are so many words here! ... I don't know what to make of them all. Jim has cancer ... and there is thunder in the mountains. Maybe its a time to see how small we are in all this, which in turn might help in managing expectations, and counting our blessings.

And with 7, I'd guess that even a bit of organizing might always help us feel more successful. And also ... sometimes we have to step outside ourselves and be something else for a while - to become a healer, or a soldier, or a mountain - like the peasant masses becoming a People's Army for a time, but eventually returning to their fields to plant their crops. So many tiny seeds! ... each growing into something.

Best, David.

Thank you both Trojina and Fredda. I left it open because it applies to past and present. Yes it applies to what IS and what HAS...held him back. The emphasis on precision and detail are the very things that he has the hardest time handling to his past..and presently with cancer it is ALL IN THE PRECISION AND DETAIL

Success is relative ..he is successful..but in what he believes he as not successful. Thank you again both of you. I will post to the CC. I have been so distracted with Jim and family I have not been as active as I usually am.
