Hello

I am very distressed because I have to put my dog down soon. She is 14 years old and has cancer. I am so stressed because the Vet is now saying it is coming to her quality of life but something is telling me to wait. She is not eating and drinking very little and I don't want her to suffer. The changing lines were Nine at the beginning and nine in the fourth.
To me it sounds like the Ching is saying to wait. I am not sure why except that I am not ready to let her go

what was your actual question--how did you phrase it in your mind?

I am so sorry, by the way. This is always a horribly painful decision. We recently put down our 18-year old cat, and we probably waited too long, I'm afraid, but we were so anxious to do the right thing.

I'm not able to help interpret I Ching readings from people that I'm not emotionally involved with. So I can't help there. But i am an animal lover, and from what you say about not eating and drinking, I do think the dog may be suffering. Perhaps it would be good to consider if you're keeping him alive for his good or for your good. If the latter, you then night want to decide if the good you're getting from keeping him alive outweighs the suffering he may be going through.

Many times i seem to come across hexagram 1 connected with passing over/dying..back to pure spirit ? Line 4 hovering on the brink may show one between life and death, a transition. I connect 1.4 very much with the spiritual, hovering between states of consciousness.

But i can't say i really know what the reading means in terms of the question.. you haven't said what your question was..BUT its the kind of question where, because i too also had a 14 year old dog who had to be put down, because i also left it as long as i could.., and later was not very pleased with myself in retrospect because as Bostonian said we have to think of who we are concerned for here.., ourselves or the pet...and because the vet has advised it then I personally can't see any good reason to let the dog continue to suffer., can you ?

Sorry thats an opinion not a reading. I do sympathise and appreciate what an incredibly difficult decision it is...but if i get anything from the reading its that the life force (hex 1) of your dog is already preparing to make the transition (1.4) so all you would be doing is helping. However of course when is up to you...and I wouldn't be truthful to say if i thought the answer said to go ahead or not, its just like Bostonian I think we have to take account of what we are doing for ourselves rather than the pet.

having said that you know your dog better than anyone and probably your instinct about what best to do for him is probably to be relied on....i guess i don't feel that good about suggesting living /dying for a sentient being terms of an I Ching reading because how would I or anyone really know ?

Use your instinct, your common sense and most of all your compassion...
