Hello people,

I asked this question this morning:
I would like to know what action to take concerning my coworker, whom I had a problem with.

I cast hex 3, Water over Thunder.
At first look, it appears to be a short run through of my exchange and problem with the coworker, I'll call him Z.
Every line seems to be a step of the experience with this person.
I may have asked instead, shall I make an apology, or tell this person why I chose to not work with him? Im not sure this person has the maturity to be told either, and it may be best to ignore Z entirely. Hence the question I did ask. So this hexagram may be telling me only what happened and where I now am.

I'm curious if I found the relative hexagrams that all of you would find. Also in reading these, I realized I don't know how to apply them, given they are examples of what this situation and hexagram 3 are not.
I did the opposite trigrams, starting with Fire over Mountain, hexagram 56.
Then I inverted all the lines of 3 in the same place to get hexagram 50 Fire over Wind, the Cauldron.

What do you see here?

Thank you for your input,

Hi Traveler74

3 can be seen as the birthing pains of a new situation or relationship most often based in an overwhelm of misunderstanding. It acknowledges the difficulties that exist and asks that you do too so that eventually, like Elvis, they can leave the building. Until that time, it offers the advice to find a place of rest for each of the points of contention. Act maturely, set clear boundaries in all the right places and when the time is right negotiate ways to address the problem or problems.

The deeper influence on 3 springs up from 23 ' Stripping Away'. So, there is an inescapable theme of working to release something that is rotten - maybe this is at the root of the problem you are experiencing.

Your question "I would like to know what action to take concerning my coworker, whom I had a problem with" is clearly asking for how to improve your side of things through the actions you take; so maybe you need to sniff around until you get that tell tell aroma pointing you towards the as yet invisible source of your difficulties.

50 very much calls for 'Establishing the New', which advocates that situations need to be corrected working from the inside out.

... of course, there may be other interpretations that speak more clearly to you.

Good Luck.

Thank you my_key.
What you said makes sense, especially the last part about 50, changing things from the inside out. I'll take a few looks at that hexagram while doing the sniff test. The sliver lining to all the hexagram readings I've seen related to this is that none of them said, back out and stay home, this guy is nuts.
So there is less fear at the mention of danger on line 3 of H3, and indeed it looks like fear is the danger.
How often this seems to be the case with difficult personalities, so I'll look at where mine is difficult to change that first.

Thanks again,

Hi, I had hex 3 few times as an answer and I will share my understanding of it. You will need to put it in perspective of your situation.

Based on the book I use:

Hex 3 is about difficulty in the beginning. It clearly matches your situation because you said you have some problems with your coworkers.

The hex represents a difficult situation for a “new life”.
It expounds the truth that a newly established situation is full of the potential to develop.
On the other hand, it also contains latent difficulties.

This gua holds the potential to create. Confucius advises that “the superior person plans and sets things in order.” It is time to prepare to do something. (Here I think is the advice for you).

On the other hand, meditating on the comentary on King Wen’s Decision, Confucius says, “The action of thunder and rain filled things up everywhere.” eventually the action comes—it is rain. Confucius then says, “At the beginning of creation, there was irregularity and disorder.” At first, there was irregularity and disorder. After the world was brought into being (the beginning), regularity and order were gradually established.

The sages learned from nature that before effecting a plan, it is important to set things in order.

King Wen’s Decision on the Gua says, “The beginning of a tiny sprout. . . . Favorable to establish feudal lords.” One in this position is able to establish feudal lords to provide security.
This situation indicates that a latent power will sprout, but in a difficult situation.

Examining the structure, the lower gua is Thunder, indicating action and power. The upper gua is Water, indicating trouble. Thunder confronting Water delivers the message that when one faces difficulty at an initial stage, no matter how powerful one is, nothing should be taken lightly. This is the main theme of the gua.

I hope it helps.

What action to take?
3.
Image: The superior man brings order out of confusion.

I see this hexagram as indicating a lot of mixed signals making it very difficult to co-ordinate partnership efforts so the advice is to focus on minimizing confusion. So perhaps this is a suggestion to make lists or to make a point of accentuating what is useful or positive.
”Difficulty” occurs at beginnings because things are new and unfamiliar. Perhaps the difficulties you are experiencing will lesson as the two of you become more familiar with each other. On the other hand it sounds from what you’ve posted as if you and the other fellow are no longer going to be working together. 3 uc can indicate the initial difficulties are too great and so the advice is for the project to be abandoned.

Hi All,

Thank you all for the input you have given. I have an update for you. The coworker I refer to as Z eventually accepted that my decision not to work with him was personal to me, and he didn't ask for further clarification. Then he and the others he was working with moved on to another site. I never saw the guy again. My boss was actually glad the situation happened, as he needed someone that was knowledgeable enough to finish what I had originally been working on. So, I owned my part, stuck to my gut, and the result was fair. As of a few days ago, I and several others were given a layoff, which was expected. Now on to other opportunities,

Thanks again,
