Hexagram 48.4 and making a business decision

Hi everybody!

I would be very grateful if some of you could enlighten me about answer I got for my question yesterday.

I have a construction company and I have been working a lot lately. I have a contract with a log house producer but it has been very slow progress with the sales. I am starting to doubt if I ever get the sales going on so I asked I ching "Should I quit this co-operation?" The answer was 48.4.

I have been pushing myself very hard with little results and feeling that it is starting to truly drain my energy. The 48 perfectly matches to the current situation. But how should I interpret the changing 4th line? Does it mean that despite the difficulties I should wait and see what happens or does it tell me that I am on a wrong path?


I truly appreciate if someone has the time and energy to help me with this one!

No I don't think so. When a well is being lined it is out of action for a while but that doesn't mean it will never be in working use again. A question to always ask oneself with 48 is what the well is in your question and what is the bucket that might leak or the rope that may not be long enough to reach the water ? I'm guessing the well is the resource of paying customers. It looks like maybe the customers can't be the usual old kinds of clients, if the well is being relined...well it needs a new lining.

You know best, what does the imagery here suggest to you ?

I don't see it as a 'give up' line but it is a line that calls for patience I think. I will check my journal to see how I've found it.

Thank you for still being here. Only a day or so ago someone new joined and posted a query. No one had responded by the next day and I was just thinking about how to answer her when I saw she had deleted her account ! I guess she deleted her account perhaps because she was upset that no one had answered maybe. I don't know, but it is worth remembering that how soon people respond here is just down to the luck of the draw. Also threads do sink so it is always worth boosting them up to the top as you have

Looking in my own journal it looks to me the line has described times where I couldn't use or partake in things whilst they were undergoing regeneration. In several instances I did exit the situation and with hindsight I can see, well when a place is under construction you cannot live in it. Hehe and you have a construction company. One time I had it for a flat I had the chance of but I found out the reason it was available was because vandals had set fire to the previous tenants car on almost a nightly basis ! Hence for me the property was unusable, probably unusable for anyone until the local authority/police had made that well/housing resource good again. Also had it when I switched from one organisation to another because the initial one I was with was undergoing such disruption it just wasn't tenable.

So for me in these situations it was not practicable to hang on while the well was being relined but in other scenarios it might well be. It's a neutral line, no auspice, it just says 'no mistake'. If you have the line for your own life for example, which you can't actually just move out of while 'construction' is underway, then I think patience and awareness that it's a long haul but a necessary one, would be the way to go.

You say sales are slow. It could be a whole new customer base needs building up perhaps or it could mean letting that sort itself out while you look elsewhere ?

If a hotel is under construction I can't stay in it so I'd go and stay somewhere else. But I might go and stay in it next year when it's lined itself and sorted itself out.

I have heard some, possibly Hilary, say this line is active, you don't just wait for the well to line itself , you do it also. But in my own experience in mundane matters it's often referred to things out of action for some time. In more emotional, whole life themed matters I think it suggests patience while you take time out to heal, recuperate, make good what has fallen out of service for you. In sales how might that translate ? It might be the product needs a rethink or it might be the sales target population needs a rethink ? What do you think ?

BTW I checked out the line path which is 28.4, 28.3 and 47.3. You don't need to use these but they help you see the inner experience of the line. These lines show there's quite a lot of stress in the situation, it needs renovating if it isn't to collapse. Can you stay somewhere that needs renovating...I think you possibly can if what needs renovating is the sales database etc etc

I need to reflect in this one. It is a big decision to make. My heart is somewhere else than sales and construction. Perhaps that is why I do not reach to my inner Well..

Yes that is the thread I meant and I did "retreat" back to Stockholm and work there which eventually sorted out many of my problems.

I have been contemplating and reading the meaning of Hex 48.4. It is auite clear that the I Ching is telling me that I need to take batter care of myself which I have been neclecting because of the work load that I have. It is also clear that the path that I am walking is not nourishing my soul's purpose.

I took the job for I truly believed in the log house business but as time showed the company had done nothing when it comes to building these houses. I have a splendid product to sell but there is no contractor who takes care of the projects. Perhaps this is what is meant by the 4th line Well being under construction for benefit of all. All the sellers are facing the same issue and the work is being done to put up a construction company that is supposed to take cafe of the projects. This will take time and effort, something that the 4th line could also refer to.

I found another commentary on Hex 48 that says,

"You are surrounded by negative influences and you are very much alone. It is because you have neglected your better self and you are wasting your abilities. Your good qualities are not being used, overlooked by your superiors. Your friends look upon this with regret. For a time you will be ineffective, but stop anyway and get a firm grip on yourself. It is worth it. Only the relaxed, natural leader helps and inspires others, really contributes, and is respected and admired for it."


I have been studying Vedic Astrology, Tarot, I Ching and the symbols of different mythologies for almost 5 years now. This path is very different from the path that I am currently earning my money from. My creativity flourishes when I talk about Astrology or mythology and sometimes it feels like when I guide people the wisdom comes beyond me, from a greater Source. This could be the Well Hex 48 i refering to.

Now since I have stopped writing and helping people I have totally lost the connection with this source. I can hardly get anything out of myself when it comes to selling these log houses. I have to push myself very hard to be able to do this job. If the building part was taken care better It would be a lot easier to sell these houses but still it is not who I truly am. It is just that the person that I am is so different from "ordinary" that I have chosen to not be it and therefore tried to "fit in". It becomes more and more clear that I will never "fit in" and if I wish to blossom I need to nourish the better Self that I have chosen to hide from others.

I am sorry for venting out here but I needed to get things out of my chest It is easier for me to understand myself when I put my thoughts and feelings into words. Not sure if other members on this forum are aware of the MBTI personlity types but I am INFJ myself. Hello Von Stark, I was reading this thread, because I got a 48.4 about something, and the thread helped me, because I realize I have not been taking enough care of myself, lack of sleep and other things, and that possibly this was a factor in the condition I was asking about. Could be another self “under construction” in a way, to quote Trojina. I find myself reading threads that are several years old, and I get curious ...what happened? in the end...but often it seems that the member is no longer participating, so I can’t write and ask them. I know this thread is also a few years old, but I was hopeful when I saw that you had participated in the shared postings a year ago...I just got curious did you stay in the log house business or move into astrology or tarot or something along those lines, as you mentioned you were finding new creativity and curiosity about. I have a good friend who is a gifted astrologer and , yes, it seems it is a good way to use a love of/ facility with story telling — creating a picture for someone in words. Tarot as well. Anyway, if you get notification of this, it would be interesting to hear what direction your life is taking these days, otherwise hope you are well and blessed...
