Hi guys, I am a little puzzled with the recent response I got regarding the place where I work. My current boss has made a few comments recently about possibly wanting to sell the practice where I work. I have always thought I will end up buying a practice so after some consideration I have asked the Yi: "What if I buy the practice"? I got hex 50 unchanging, which I thought was a good omen for any business venture. I then plucked up the courage to speak to my boss who then gave me a straight NO answer! So why such positive response to something that is not going to happen at this time? Im confused...

Hi Veronica,
I would first of all suggest the difficulty is more likely in the question that you phrased than in the answer. Hex 50 is a lovely hexagram about the ultimate peaceful expression of spiritual values within the context of the traditional ancient Chinese formal family dinner.

Your question as you stated it in this thread was:
"What if I buy the practice"?
Putting the two together, they fit remarkably well. If your boss only wished someone, anyone to come forward to buy the practice, the response you note would be unexpected. Given the response you report, it sounds like there are as yet unresolved family dynamics type issues involved in this small business situation. If you bought the practice, it would mean that you have settled all the personal issues involved, the Yi seems to suggest. However, that is a long, long way from solving the problems that apparently need to be dealt with, so that you could buy the business or even understand what is going on with your boss.

Hello Veronica

It sounds like this is something that you really wanted to happen and what with the boss's straight NO answer it feels like life has come up and given you a slap in the face. No wonder you are confused.

Wilhelm talks about the Cauldron as being "Supreme good fortune" and is a hexagram for nourishment of the spirit. I would agree with Frank that there are some issues to sort out on a cultural / personal level with you boss.

Maybe the situation needs a bit more exploring ( "Thus the superior man consolidates his fate by making his position correct." ) both in terms of whether this is the right choice for you and the nourishment of your spirit and exploring the situation with what your boss was expecting when he mentioned to you about selling the business and why he gave you the flat NO. Finding a solution that nourishes both of your spirits would be absolutely wonderful.

As in all negotiations keep the channels of communication open.

Best of luck

Mike

Many thanks Mike and Frank, both your responses are actually spot on, it just shows you are so much closer to the Yi than I am :). In fact, there are some unresolved family type issues at the moment, there are two partners who own the practice and one of them is going through some personal problems (awful actually, first his 4 year old son developed a brain tumour and is currently undergoing treatment and last weekend his wife has asked for a divorce!). And yes, in response to your comment Mike, I would LOVE to own a practice one day and it was just a big disappointment, especially that I really need a pick up in my life as well. Anyway, was just surprised by the apparent positiveness of the Yi's response (hex 50 unchanged) in view of the fact that the dream is not to materialise, but I am much closer to the truth than before. Many thanks Guys.

Hi Veronica,

Sounds like you have already gotten your answer, but I thought I would share just for the sake of the study. First, your question was rather oddly phrased. You didn't ask, "How should I proceed in order to buy the practice?" but just a sort of fantasy question, "What if I buy the practice?" I think you got encouragement from the I Ching here to the effect that if you did you would be very good at running it - which I would take as a great vote of confidence! - but you didn't ask, "How will the boss respond to my offer?" which is a whole different Cauldron of fish. I also think it's note worthy that you did not receive any change lines. I think when there are no change line that means the situation is not changing (not sure I'm correct here.)

Best wishes,
Rosada

Hi Rosada

It's a great point that you make about how the shape of the question forms the shape of the answer. It's so important to spend time forming the right question so that Yi will give the right pointers on the truly desired area of the answer.

On the point you raise about no changing lines in respect to the question "What if I buy the practice?" If you mean by "the situation is not changing" that the boss is not going to change his mind, I'm not so sure that this is necessarily the case. The changing lines seem to me to be refering to the situation as there is nothing that Veronica needs to do for the moment. All around the situation is how it should be and it's a case of watch this space as everything unfolds.

Many thanks for your comments, Mike and Rosada, I do agree about the importance of how the question is phrased but I also know that in the past I would still receive an indication (very often in the form of a changing line(s) about the likelihood of success (i.e. yes you would be great running the practice but after a time of delay etc.) so perhaps the disappointment lies in my inability to read deep enough into hex 50 to see the answer.... :-(

"What if I buy the practice"? I got hex 50

You are asking "if" like in in "what if I take a holiday in China"?. It is only a potential, nothing concrete, like in asking "what if I buy a lotto ticket"?.

So, Hex 50 is saying that "if" you can buy the practice then that will be really good for you, it's not saying that you can but only "if" you could. So, it has nothing to do with the guy as you phrased the question only about a possible outcome.

I think you are right, Willowfox, that's exactly how I should look at it and be much more careful when phrasing questions next time!

Hi Veronica and everyone.:)
Like Rosada said, I know you got some really good answers answers already that answered your question, but just to contribute here my own 2 cents.:)
I remembered when I read your question, that the Cauldron can suggest exactly the kind of thing our other friends here have suggested--that you need to work where you really fit. It's not about compartmentalizing work, family beliefs and feelings, and spiritualiity.
The best fit would be one in which it all works--like as in a psychiatirist who loves his patients .I remember that, because while I' not a psychiatrist, I'm a social worker, and years aog when I wasan't as failiar with the Yi, I counseled a lot of younger folks at th time and I loved my work, and was thinking about my work and received H.50.no lines.
It didn't mean success or failure per se, but that I was in the right fit then and that is the type of balanced position I always should be in--at least that is how I see it.

Hex 50 is really a cooking pot, you throw in the ingredients, stir, bring to the boil, stir some more and simmer for a few weeks or months.
Business is the same, you put in the right ingredients, watch over it and you should indeed get a tasty result sometime in the future.

Let's not forget that the question was indeed only about the possibility of a future outcome if she actually was able to get hold of the practice is question.

Thank God for this forum, that's what I have to say. Yes, when I asked that question (What if I buy the practice?) I had a warm feeling in my stomach, like I would belong in that environment. So perhaps the timing is not right, maybe it is not the right practice to buy but maybe it is the direction I should follow in the future. This I would have not come up with myself if not for this forum. Thank you!

Hi everyone,
I know this is an old post, but I did a Google search to find an answer to an almost identical question. As a result I've joined the forum. Hi!

After turning it over and reading four translation for hexagram 50, I've concluded the answer applicable to my situation, this may or may not be of any use to you, I hope it will, or at least to someone:

Hexagram 50 - No Changing Lines
In order for the situation to come about an offering will have to be made (wood for the fire, ingredients for the meal).
If the ingredients are correct (sincere and worthy participants are used)
and the correct attitude is applied (wood/steady growth, cooking Hex 63 not ending),
the ultimate outcome (the meal) will be to everyone's advantage.

Incidentally, to my meager understanding when no changing lines occur, the answer is:
concentrate on this one aspect
If there is no change the situation is currently unchanging

Yes I know the idea of static change is not ideal, but for the sake of simplifying things, hope I got away with it. ; )

hi Veronica,
probably I'm wrong,
but any way I want to share my experience with you.
Regarding your question and the words used in it.... "What if I buy the practice"?
the oracle is answering you that if you buy or not the small practice, where you work, is not really important for your cosmic order. This event is not a necessary step in your life. the answer is closely related to the this small practice.
