Hi All, I have been struggling with a part-time class I having been taking as it has been 3 months and the community college professor is not that good. He has not referenced the textbook, resources, or given any assignments and the class ends in May already. I feel like I am not learning anything and feel like I did not do well on my last test which I hope isn't my only grade. This a key class I need to receive credit for, and I feel its not going well so I asked the i-ching the following...

How am i supposed to be successful in this class?
Hexagram 22.1.5.6 to 39
Line 1 - Don't go too fast. Learn step by step?
Line 5 - must be sincere in my efforts?
Line 6 - no idea
Hexagram 39 - either a huge obstacle lies ahead, or am i creating mental obstacles

Hi there -- I'm sorry it's been such a rough class so far :(

I'm not sure if this is the "right' way to do it, but I find that the relating hexagram sometimes just describes the current situation I'm in, so in this case it seems like 39 does reflect your experience with your class so far: full of obstacles to your learning and engagement. I wouldn't necessarily interpret it as an upcoming obstacle or a mental obstacle you've created; maybe it's just the way things currently are.

Hexagram 22 seems to be about beauty/grace and other things on the surface: could this relate to the fact that the course is a requirement for credit, but the actual substantive depth of learning isn't there because of how poorly the class is run?

I like your interpretation of the first line! The line also seems to suggest that the class itself might not teach you anything, and to be successful you'll need to teach yourself. You have to "stand on your own two feet," so to speak.

The fifth changing line seems to show someone adorned in humble clothes (or is it an image of someone with a meager gift to offer?). Your interpretation of this line also makes sense to me: you'll be successful if you're sincere in your efforts, even if it currently feels like you didn't do well on the recent test and you aren't confident about your current performance in the class ("what you have to offer").

Someone in another thread about 22.6 described it as "what you see is what you get" -- the image of someone dressed simply in white without a lot of ornamentation or embellishment. Is this saying that in order to be successful, stay focused on the most fundamental, unadorned goals for the class, what you hope to achieve at the most basic level. (Maybe this also gets down to what one means by "success": is it just passing the class or actually learning something?)

I'm new to the I Ching, so this might be completely off base. Does any of it resonate with you?

Hey, so this does resonate with me. You are right that the their is no depth to the class - everything is on my shoulders since the professor is not teaching. The class so far has taught me squat and yes you are right I am having to teach myself everything - so much for paying for a class. Hexagram 22.6 I am think you might be right that I need to rely on my true goals here that is to actually learn the fundamentals and really with that hopefully comes a good grade.
