How does family tie into my question?

Hello all,

I've had this feeling that I should buy a lottery ticket, and so my casting question is "What are the chances of winning if I go in the lotto this week?" and the result was 37.1.3 > 20

The result has a relation to family and/or relationships. I'm wondering what the result is saying. As I read about the hexagrams, I'm thinking about a little background info that I'm thinking of this as a means to having more flexibility in times of financial challenges where things may become more expensive than I could personally handle at the time being. So somewhere in the back of my mind maybe I'm thinking the lottery is a solution, but the result here could be leading back to finding other solutions within the family or people I know that might be able to help pull through in the time being. But at the same time, I'm thinking if thoughts of the lottery come up, it could help others in the family, as I wouldn't have a need for all the winnings if I did have the jackpot. There is sometimes a sense in the family (or at least what I've learned growing up) that the people who bring in the money are the ones with more power or control over what's done with the money. So it seems to me there are multiple possibilities as to what this hexagram is telling me. I thought that it was an intriguing casting considering I never asked about relationships or family and those kinds of questions were ones I've found asked before that have gotten this hexagram as a result.

Any thoughts/perspectives, or guidance on how I might better work to interpret these lines and hexagram(s) would be greatly appreciated.

Well I have no idea how this reading applies to winning the lottery or not.


37 line 1, to me is about establishing rules, boundaries, and roles in the family, especially in the
beginning. By doing this, you set up a foundation for
success. So this could refer to friends, family,
relationships, or even your self.

37 line 3, to me there's more than one angle to look at
it. On one hand, is there anyone you're being too stern
or too severe with? Perhaps even too stern with
yourself? On the other hand you don't want to be so undisciplined that its all play and no work. Its like a cup of ice cream is great, don't want to eat the whole carton though. A shot is great once in a while, but not drinking the whole bottle of whiskey.

Although it is better to be disiplined, and
better not to indulge ourselves to the extreme. A
balance is still needed. You don't want to be so
extreme in displine that it causes arguments or
separations. You don't want to be so stern that you don't enjoy life, ever. And if this is the case, seems just
expressing regret, and giving your explanation, is enough to be able to make the corrections needed with a successful outcome.

Hmmm... now that I've written this, I can see how it could pertain to a lottery winning. 37 line 1, be sure before hand you can afford to play, write out a list of exactly what you would do with that money, for yourself, as well as others. Another words, how you would manage it. Better in the beginning or beforehand, because after you win you may be too excited, loose your head, and loose your newly won money.

37 line 3, although its OK to splurge and purchase a lottery ticket once in a while, don't make it a habit. Better stay disciplined and still do the work that needs to be done. Take care of yourself and your family.

20- your thinking about it, contemplating. 37- I have no idea why the rules and roles of the family came up for you. Only you can answer that. But if it is to answer your actual question, sounds like you have a 50/50 chance.

I use a convention where 37-3 is the priamry interpretation and 20-1 is the supplemental information.

37-1 Chinese text translation: Family atmosphere is filled with chiding and reprimand. While it is tense and severe, dangers shall be eradicated, leading to auspiciousness. If family is filled with laughter, with maternal figure is playing and joking with her children, undesired outcome may ultimately result.


Basically it says solidifying family foundation (theme of 37) is not a metter to take lightly and a joking atmosphere is not fit to build family prosperity.

20-1 chinese text translation: At the lowest observing capability is the childish observation. Just to interact with day-to-day un-enlightened crowd, there is no harm/regret making childish or superficial observation. But to an ambitious, responsible, noble person, such observation lacks sufficient details and insights, leading to undesirable outcome.

Maybe you can examine this response from the perspective of your underlying motives/expectations/ seriousness of asking this question, I think you already did some in your initial post.

Hi Magnus,

that is a fun and lighthearted question And it is one where the outcome will not be in doubt....
To me the primary meaning of Hex 37 has always been "Whatever you want to have on the outside, must be existing on the inside" That could mean that in order to win the lottery, you must achieve to be a deserving winner. Only then will the positive outside result resonate with your person.
Blue Angel already mentioned taking good care of your family - that I think is a very good example. If you were to be favored by the lottery gods, would you share your wealth with your family (and extended family of friends)? Do you plan to stay calm and collected and spend the money wisely? ("Thus the superior man has substance in his words and duration in his way of life.")

I agree with Blue Angel that Line 3 is a warning to not overdo it and lose yourself in the chance of winning. Stay grounded instead. Well, that is excellent advice in case you actually DO win

I didn't end up taking part in the lottery, and also, after a few weeks of the jackpot increasing, it was won by others instead of growing more. Could be coincidence.
